Probability Lecture 4: Independence, discrete random variables - 1st Year Student Lecture

  • In Lecture 4 (of the six we are showing, see 'Probability' playlist), we introduce the notion of independence of events, capturing the idea that certain events do not influence each other, and we introduce the notion of a discrete random variable as a function on a probability space, representing an observable in a random experiment. We introduce probability mass functions to describe the distribution of a random variable.

    All first and second year lectures are followed by tutorials where students meet their tutor in pairs to go through the lecture and associated problem sheet and to talk and think more about the maths. Third and fourth year lectures are followed by classes.
