  • Lecture 5 (of six we are showing) covers some of the main classical distributions of discrete random variables and how they arise in some examples. We also introduce the notion of the expectation of a discrete random variable, which captures the average value under its distribution as a weighted average of its possible values, weighted by their probability of occurrence. Finally, we define independence of discrete random variables.

All first and second year lectures are followed by tutorials where students meet their tutor in pairs to go through the lecture and associated problem sheet and to talk and think more about the maths. Third and fourth year lectures are followed by classes.
