“I Am You: A Poem from Gaza to Israel” by Dr. Refaat Alareer, who was murdered on December 7th, 2023 along with all of his family in the genocidal bombardment of Gaza by the occupation forces of the Zionist entity that sacrilegiously calls itself Israel, and kills Palestinians by the tens of thousands in the name of Jewish safety, and has likely killed over 25,000 in Gaza in just 100 days since the brutal assault by Hamas on 10/7, and continues to wage war on the innocent people of Gaza with the goal of permanent total displacement of the population through shameless terrorism and obvious war crimes with U.S. bombs and tax dollars while refugees freeze in sub zero temperatures in Chicago, where I live, on Anishinabe land.
This poem is as difficult to read as it is to hear, and listening to me read it as a Jewish person will likely be as surreal for you as it was for me to embody the martyr’s words. But I #ReadforRefaat in solidarity with @librarianswithpalestine , @publishers4palestine , @culturalworkers4palichi and so many others around the world, and most of all for Palestine itself and for all the people in the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, because I want you to hear and experience the power of his words, and sit with the deep historical analysis presented in this poem and summed up in its refrain: I am you.
