- Want to play blues?
How to start playing guitar or blues guitar for an absolute beginner.
Even if you’ve never picked up a guitar, with time you should be able to use this video as a stepping stone to more complex ideas.
We assume no prior knowledge and show you how to tune the guitar in a way so you may use one finger to make the chords.
A great way of building basic knowledge before committing to further playing.
So, we tune to Open G tuning (as used by many delta blues and rock greats) and you can play this on you acoustic guitar, electric guitar or even a resonator guitar.
You’ll then learn how to construct a 12 Bar Blues.
Counting along you’ll be able to play it in its most basic form within 5 minutes.
Once done, as a bonus we then teach ways to make it more interesting, like; fingerpicking, bass lines, 7th chords and even how to make it work with a slide.

Hi Martin, thanks for this video! It helps me to enjoy and to play step by step Blues guitar . I hope to see more videos like this to learn more technics on the Blues guitar because it brings joy !
Glad this helps!
I’ve had such great feedback from just this first 24 hours of this video.
Will definitely do more that start simply. Could even make this video but in a more simpler fashion.

@TheWashboardResonators , Dear Martin, you often see On UA-cam ,called " easy beginners guitar 🎸 lessons ",it's ok,maybe a second lesson and that's it! All the others lessons ,you can't follow them because they are for advanced persons and so you loose your motivation to continue to enjoy playing. 😐
Interesting!!
VERY NICE mARTIN, THANX
Hope it opens a few doors!!
Very nice beginners lesson ! I am sure I am going to try this open G tuning. Thank you !
Hope it helps!!
Hi mate very good lessons,i am 72 years young and i have always liked the blues, have you ever played a aluminum resonter as i have made two of them , and they have a very nice mellow sound as aluminum is a dull metal, drop a piece of aluminum on the floor and it doesn't ring like steel or brass but when you make a resonator nice sound.
Never played one. I’ve heard Dobro made some of their fiddle edges in aluminium in the 30s.
The consensus seems to be that they’re quiet.
TBH I don’t know.
I love how guitars can be completely different and produce a massive range of sounds!!
Anyone making resonator guitars is a skilled engineer!!
Congratulations!!
🎼🎯🎼
Tak!
Thanks!! 😍
Excellent👍😎 You've explained and demonstrated that in your tuitional that a monkey could play it! Would love to see your band. All the best from another Martin.
❤️🎼❤️
What is that model of resonator? 14 fretter too!
1935 National Trojan.
Hi Martin, can I double check the notes please so fat e up to D the A up to G then D say at D the G stay at G the B stay at B then High E ( skinney )to d, as I just broke two strings trying to get these notes, and whilst I have spares just checking cause the Fat E is a fair bit below D thats all, am I missing something? Cheers
Not up to D & G. Down to D & G. You can hear the note gets lower pitched as I change the strings!
Ooops!
Good excuse to put new strings on!!
🎼😬🎼
You might be playing the notes but you definitely aint playing the blues, listen up people if you know you know
It’s a starting point for absolute beginners to learn the form. After they can interpret it however they want.
Blues comes in many forms.
Some of it is happy dance music, some of it related to swing music and so on.
If you’re a beginner and it’s not ‘bluesy’ enough then move on to a beginners lesson that is.
