You can say that again! It truly changed how I see genres in general, that allegory to RPGs with courage the cowardly dog was just so on point.
I do think that ff13 is an awful game in narrative, gameplay, artstyle, etc, but it is true that final fantasy always tries to reinvent itself, even if they rehash their franchises(7 specifically) non stop.
Only 1700 views?? Man, you need WAY more than that. I resonated with this vid because I agree with almost everything, as a old school JRPG fan every time people said that jRPGs where dead in the PS360 era I was like... no? you just need to look harder. But it's because a lot of JRPGs in that era where in the transitioning HD era, trying to figure out what to do, we got a lot of experimental shit that honestly weren't that bad.
I just finished Bravely Default and watched many videos on it but it's the first time I hear someone compare the story of the game to the repetitiveness of always replaying classic JRPGs with classic stories! Excellent video!! Loved it!

I have only seen 2 out of your 3 videos. But hot damn have you sold me on this channel. These videos have done a fantastic job expanding my view of how I look at games or genres and increased my appreciation for JRPG's further. Up until I got into SMT: Devil Survivor I honestly believed the message that turn-based games are generally just mainline Pokemon but with a more rigid party. None of the quality of life improvements, innovations, drastic turns and directions it has made were brought to my attention until I tried that unassuming DS game on a coworker's suggestion.
I look forward to your future videos but also curse you for being the first and only person to make me want to play Bravely Default. No one else has made it sound nearly as compelling or interesting as you have.

You opened my eyes to just how experimental FF is. I believe games CAN be art, but it's becoming a tougher discussion, and FF is a forerunner in the argument.
I havnt played Bravely Default, but I'm digging into SaGa games lately. Very snappy combat system, quickly became one of my favourite approaches.
I still don't even know where to begin with SaGa, that's a huge gap for me
@@mrlinguini2864 SaGa Frontier is as good a place as any. The quality of life changes make it easy to jump in. Then from what I've played and read so far, they all stand separate from one another, certain themes and trends carry over, much like FF.
Story isnt really there thing though.

I believe we need both innovation and tradition. Both have strong pros and cons, it is great thats games innovate but not every series necessarily needs to innovate stagnation isnt necessarily bad or good it's important to have something familiar to fall back on but have a something that moves forward
I don't disagree and it's why I like the comparison with Ni No Kuni. There's a place for that I just don't think we should pretend it's cutting edge in a genre that typically isn't allowed to innovate.
Just look at the Tales of fanbase, you'll never find a more divided JRPG franchise, basically everyone have a different opinion on every single entry, yet franchises that sticks with tradition such as DQ (which isn't inherently a bad thing) they usually love the entire series. For the same reason there is people that absolutely hate or love change, it all depends honestly, but for franchises such as FF or Zelda I can give them a pass and I actually can enjoy every single entry individually.
I love this video so much. If it doesn't reach a million views by the end of 2021 I will forever be depressed.

Great video but your gonna need to change the title and or thumbnail if you want more views. You don’t have to go for something click bait but “when did jrpg’s die” would probably give u thousands more views.
You're definitely right but it's a tough balance for me. I want people to see my stuff but I really liked this thumbnail and title so decided to keep it. Views are great but at the end of the day I make these for myself :) I'm working on it though thanks.

What do you think of Bravely Default II?
I finished it a few years ago and haven’t thought much about it besides the music - I think the rpg game itself is more interesting but narratively I was a little let down. The things I like about the original can’t really be done a second time and the series has shifted a lot of focus into 4th wall breaks but have lost what made that meaningful and subversive by doing it 3+ times now without a real purpose for doing them other than to surprise the player
I feel part of the narrative that people had that generation besides the blatant xenophobia present was that the industry has a hard time looking at hand held haves as equivalently important as console games. Owners of the psp or ds were abundantly fed a variety of games cherishing and eschewing JRPG history but they would not be seen as such because of how people treat fidelity and abstract ideas about a games worth etc.
Absolutely - which sucks because those handhelds and their libraries are still amazing
