Pretty much every railroad that had freight also had passenger service until 1969. I remember well seeing passenger trains zooming through the high desert (Victorville Ca) with multi loco's pulling multi coaches from every line. Shortly thereafter, Amtrak took over

Southern Railway System passenger trains used the cavernous Atlanta Terminal Station downtown. Also downtown, was Union Station, used by L&N, Georgia Railroad and Atlantic Coast Line.
Seaboard Air Line used Terminal Station and when the railroads merged in 1967, "The Silver Comet," their last passenger train, used Terminal Station. Both stations were razed in 1972. They used wrecking balls. I recall it took quite some time to knock down Terminal Station, which sat on a 4-acre plot of land.
In later years, Central of Georgia and The Southern continued a high level of service. COG used dome cars on the intrastate, Atlanta-Savannah, "Nancy Hanks."
The only train using Union Station by 1969, far as I know, was a raggedy remnant of L & N's, "Georgian," which ran between Atlanta and Evanston. It once ran all the way to Chicago. Had one grimy E8, and mostly baggage cars.

today Amtrak sucks as a passenger in coach, business class, and all classes! The ticket prices are too high for what you get...for the price. Even the railroad equipment is in bad condition. The train equipment before the 1970s was beautiful and seemed in great shape. It was a better time period to travel.

As a kid I saw some pictures of Central of Georgia equipment in an encyclopedia, and in an issue of Trains Magazine. Otherwise, I could find very little about the railroad.

Bring back the passenger service by track owners freight railway companies instead of amtrak only passenger service

There's no money in it with Automobiles and Aircraft. That's why the Government took it over.

@@dan-berladyn Not when the govt. subsidizes automobile travel and air travel. That killed the passenger train in the first place.

Track owners begged to get out of the passenger train business. ICC would not allow the track owners to give up their passenger trains until Amtrak was created by our government.

@@jackanthony976 Right. It was unprofitable with the govt. subsidizing all other forms of transportation------with taxes they got from the railroads!

If their was a way to make a profit running passenger service in this country the private sector would already be doing it. They gave up over 50 years ago and I doubt they will ever return.

New Orleans has never had "trolleys". They are called streetcars. And there is nothing "Cajun" about the Big Easy.
