Where else in the U.S. can one find so much railroad action but in Chicago...especially in the 1950's and 60's!
World respected rail photographer Emery Gulash began capturing prolific amounts of action in and near the Chicago area from the early 50's.
There are 15 railroads portrayed in Volume 1 such as: Santa Fe, CB&Q, Northern Pacific, Great Northern, Chicago & Northwestern Indiana, Milwaukee Road, Rock Island, North Shore, Grand Trunk, GM&O, Illinois Central, Monon, Norfolk & Western, C&EI, and C&O.
In the mid-fifties, to be a railfan in Chicago, there was no limit to the majestic views of railroads, Exotic first generation diesels, sparkling consists of the new streamlined passenger trains, well maintained track work...these were all the things that truly excited the railfan of that time...and Emery Gulash was no exception.
Filmed in crisp, bright 16mm color, witness the end of steam on a few roads and the birth of the diesel as the mainstay of power for freight and passenger.
See typical incredible Emery Gulash photography, coupled with the Frog's fast paced editing, this is a collectors item you've just got to have!
    Approx. Run Time 2 hours

What an incredible era it must have been. I was born in 73 so the closest I get is a heritage event. Still enjoy Chicago but it's amazing how many more tracks and stations there were.

Chicago's Railroads are sadly a shell of their former self, It makes me sad I was born way too late (like January 2008) where most of these railroads stopped existing

It’s so weird to hear them say places like Downer’s Grove and Congress Park since I live basically next to those places. I’m literally a mile from Congress Park Station on the BNSF route.

I don’t think we were born in the wrong era persay. We just don’t have the same kind of beauty or simplicity a lot of (but certainly not all) people had back then. Even the most impatient person in the 1950s was far more reserved than people are today. When we live in a world where the average high school student suffers from an amount of diagnosable anxiety that would’ve had him/her committed to a mental hospital, the lack of certain things seen in these vintage videos does make one wish for a simpler time. Even if there are definitely aspects of that time period we would absolutely loath.

Ive lived on the former rail yards south of Dearborn Station since 1982. Still trying to see exactly how it looked when trains went under Clark Street around 15th.
The building there now is interesting- looks a bit built up from a former depression

Hey there lovers of Old Train films now turned into videos from Cleveland , Ohio ... 🤗 Love the footage of Everything seen here especially the old school Santa Fe WAR BONNET 👍 locomotives , but at 7:17 of this footage the narrator said " Here comes a couple of CN locomotives around the curve towards us from CANADA " ... Can someone tell how in the Hell those diesel locomotives are CN from CANADA when they clearly say the GT on them ? ( Grand Trunk Railroad ) 🤔 W. T. F.
