but do you think companies are willing to pay higher wages to their workers? If he does tariff china, those companies could move to other countries like in southeast asia, south asia, or south america.
@@villiamfangy6205 No I do not. Chinese EVs are, for example, an exercise in pure efficiency. There is no way on Earth that America can compete with such precise engineering, scale, automation and technology in any industry that produces complex machines or even specialist components.
How long do you imagine it might take for a major manufacturer to close up shop in an international market and move their production facility and train staff back in the US?
I'm a leftie but this is good for local jobs in the long term. Short term pain for long term gain we should do it in Australia too, bring back manufacturing jobs and increase real wages.
No it isnt. Western manufacturers need massive corporate welfare handouts to compete with China. This is due to high cost of energy and labour in western nations. Thats why we got rid of Holden... It was a corporate welfare blackhole. You think tariffs would have saved it?
Increase real wages..... What? Why would wages increase? Cost of labour one of main reasons we cant compete.... You want cost of labour to increase? I do not understand.
Moot point really, manufacturing needs fewer and fewer people due to robotics and A.I. I would still like to see more done here though, it seems silly to send our resources to countries with few, only to pay to get them back after value adding.
Tariffs are good to encourage companies to produce in the USA and not outsource to other countries for cheap sometimes even slave labor to maximize profits. If they price of overseas goods is to high for you don't buy from them.
Pfft. Western nations cannot compete unless they are given massive corporate welfare subsidies by the state. Thats why we got rid of Holden remember. Why all the Euro manufacturers are moving to China...
Got the GST not long after neoliberalism brought down the price of imports. Price of trashy magazines back up.... GST was supposed to bring down the price of fuel right? What are they spending it on?
Australia and the U.S.A. send commodities and products to our major trading partner, which have tariffs and outright bans placed on them. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
Ummmm - we are supposed to be free market neoliberals..... China is resisting us.... To protect their economic independence. The thing we all lost under neoliberalism in this nation from Keating to now.....
@theoneonly259 I don't understand your point. Are we not allowed to preserve our economic independence in the same ways as our trading partners? They are not third world, they spend big all over Africa and Asia for influence and don't need preferential treatment from us.
The poor countries produce goods at an a fourth of the price as we do in U.S. Even with tariffs, they are still CHEAPER. Plus the government is getting all of the money from tariffs.
The extra tariff costs have also been getting absorbed by the CPC (as the tariffs intended), who already ironically subsidise (at a loss) the products in the first place (as part of their own self-serving reality and 'free-market' illusion/grift) in order to long-term monopolise markets, which an unsubsidised/REAL free-market can't compete with (unless their governments also devolve to become a state/corporate monopoly). The CPC also grift off the exploitation of their own over-controlled masses who don't really have a choice.....like many poor countries which always strangely seem to have a bunch of wealthy folks lording over the masses....and tend to have an extreme poverty/wealth weighting but not as much of a healthy middle class helping to balance power and the ability to unfairly leverage it.
So just keep over-prioritising 'cheap stuff' then despite the long term effects (and what we're enabling while deliberately lessening ourselves.....in the all important quest for 'cheap stuff'.)
Tariffs also " risk" bringing manufacturing back to the US.
Yes. Economic magic!
People will build factories.. because... Tariffs?? Reagan, Voo Doo Babbleomics

Do you imagine that this would happen over a weekend? How long do you think repatriating manufacturing takes? A - years!
Increase real wages means increase inflation

Not just high cost of energy either you know.... Unions have prices western workers out of the ballgame......

I call BS, how about you disclose your financial portfolio before giving advice on tariffs
