They are already suffering. They see those that are not suffering as being "unjustly rich" and are trying to bring everyone down to their level of misery. This also drove the Dubbya "New Normal" after his economic crash. Obama proved that it was entirely inflicted by the 1%.

I wonder why Politicians and Journalists don’t revisit the outcome of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. Yes it was a long time ago, during The Great Depression, but a quick review provides insight into the repercussions of the Tariff Act and what the US economy may look forward too, if the Trump Administration proceeds with their updated tariff act. The outcome of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act was that global trade decreased by greater than 60% and the Great Depression was exacerbated and extended by several years.

I hope we all know that it doesn't matter who is in the 'top job' because this is a systemic problem -- greed. It's time to address the renewal of corporate tax policies. In the 1950s and 1960s, corporate taxes for the wealthiest businesses were as high as 60%. This era coincided with a significant economic boom, marked by widespread prosperity, strong infrastructure development, and a thriving middle class. Back then, corporations contributed their fair share, ensuring the government had the resources to invest in the country's growth.
Today, however, corporate tax rates have drastically decreased, benefiting the wealthiest corporations and billionaires. This shift has widened the wealth gap and placed a heavier burden on ordinary taxpayers. Many MAGA supporters have been swayed by Republican rhetoric, failing to see that their elected officials often prioritize the interests of billionaires and large corporations over working families.
It's crucial to revisit policies that ensure corporations contribute equitably to society. Fair taxation is not about punishing success but about creating a balanced system that uplifts everyone. The prosperity of past decades serves as a reminder that when corporations invest in the nation, the entire economy thrives.

    • @Duude125

This was a good explanation, but overlooks one major thing. Everyone keeps discussing tariffs and saying that they might increase prices, yet when they give an example, always use an example in which is does increase prices. The sole purpose of a tariff is to increase prices. There is no debate about it. In the example of the Chinese EV, there is a domestic product to promote, but the he wants to just add it to everything, even when there is no domestic product, all based on the theory that this will convince manufacturers to come back to the US, but that would only cause an even larger price increase, due to the huge increase in labor costs, unless Americans are willing to work at third-world, sweatshop rates of pay.

If your employer uses a lot of imported components then the rising manufacturing costs might put them out of business and you'd loose your job or get less hours. If the Donald is stupid enough to start a trade war with the EU then it will introduce retaliatory tariffs on your exports, but they will do it with a particularly brutal twist, they will go after the economies of Red states and corporations who made large contributions to the Republicans. "I'm determined that the future of electric vehicles be made in America by union workers. Period," Biden said on Tuesday.
Former President Donald Trump first imposed the tariffs, which are taxes paid by Americans who import goods, on vehicles and a wide range of other China-made products. After a review, the Biden administration opted to keep all of the tariffs and even increase some of them - including on solar cells, batteries, computer chips, steel and aluminum.

The housing market and automobile industry, even grocery stores, have been some of the worst culprits. The idea of buying your first home, having your first child, and getting that stereotypical minivan is no longer viable for 20- and even 30-somethings. That’s a massive chunk of the middle-class. Republican supply-side economics has never been a remedy for the average person and his tariffs will hurt American consumers.
