MacDonald absolutely read "The Ancient Marianer". In “The Baron’s Apprenticeship” MacDonald depicts a conversation between the male and female leads where they discuss the meaning of the albatross and why shooting it was a bad thing. In the same book there is a scene where the female lead brings a dying pigeon to the male lead for compassion though I don't think the two scenes are directly linked.

Would love to hear some commentary on The Cruel Painter by George MacDonald. Also The Castle and Uncle Cornelius; His Story.
