  • In this mini-series we build, fly and review this laser cut sailplane kit from Tony Ray. The model is 1/6 scale, has a span of 3 metres (112"), and is designed for 4 to 6 channel RC. The model can be built for slope soaring, for aerotow, thermal soaring, or as a motor glider with the inclusion of a brushless motor.
In Part 5 we conduct the maiden flight from Pendle Hill in Lancashire (0:53), and then go on to some further flight testing from some flat field aerotowing behind our EFlite Draco RC tug (3:38). In addition to testing the flight performance, we wrap the series up with our thoughts and opinions about the kit.

Very good building and flying episodes. Thanks for the tips with the CG.....That really helps with this kit.

Really enjoyed this series. Gotta be honest I didn’t like the pink at first but after seeing it in the air I’ve changed my mind.
The Moa is one of my favourite vintage gliders 😎

It is definitely growing on me also. This will be Gwen's aeroplane now it is all set up and trimmed

Just purchased the 2 seater Minimoa Tony Ray kit based on your episodes. At over £300 it is not cheap and I am wondering if I should not have purchased a laser cut kit from somewhere like Sarik as an alternative. But, as its my first glider I thought a kit would be a good starting point. Many thanks for your very clear and interesting episodes - possibly the best on UTube.

Thanks. If you take your time, the Tony Ray kit will reward you with an excellent flying machine - one or two challenges to overcome. The build photos (particularly on the downloadable .pdf) make it much easier than just building from plans, although the Chris Williams sailplane designs from Sarik also build into lovely models (with some photo help from the forums) - after purchasing all the wood etc, there is probably not that much difference in cost. Best of luck with your project.

Just (literally) completed the wings on the Tony Ray Minimoa 2. At the wing tips I have 2.5cm difference as a result of the wing join angle being slightly different between the 2 wings. So outer wings at different angles meaning the plane is now scrap. OK I am not an experienced builder but the wings are joined using the pre-drilled pine formers and I just assumed the angles would come out the same. Silly me - I should have made an template from one completed wing and use that to ensure a common joint angle. I have not done the maths but clearly a small difference at the joint has a significant impact at the wing tip. Ah well....an expensive way to learn! ps anyone want a lot of balsa scrap......

Oh dear. Sorry to hear that. Do you have a bandsaw that you could run through the knuckle joint from front to back and perhaps make some new dihedral (anhedral) braces ?

@@ScaleMeDown Hi & many thanks for your response. I think this issue highlights a particular problem with kits that have no plans. If there were plans I would happily cut the joint and separate the inner and outer wings. The inner wing is robust and fine and will take any necessary 'hacking'. With plans I could readily remake all the wing spars and ribs. What you suggest may be possible but I would expect significant damage to arise as the wing joiners are glued as well as bolted - I am currently reeling from the problem but have not thrown everything in the bin, but it was a close call. When I have calmed down I will have a look BUT the kit should not let such a thing happen/or should have advised to make a template wing angle to ensure alignment. The very reason I bought a 'kit' was to ensure a good build as this is my first glider. Frankly, while the lazer cutting is exquisite I see no advantage against building based on a plan and a set of cut parts as this kit carries a bit of a premium price. I think you are correct in your comments that it could be a very good kit but it is not there currently.
      Thanks for your excellent videos.

@@ritchardwilliams3874 No bother. I hope you can salvage her. No plans ? There should be an inner and an outer wing drawing on the included plans.
