That is the brilliant James Ingram at 2:38 & 10:34. He was one of the all-time best singers with an amazing & emotive voice. It's strange that he's not as well known today, since he was such a huge star back then & had so many big hits, including one of the most tender & touching lyrics ever written in the #1 hit song "I Don't Have The Heart." Sadly, James is one of several artists in the vid who is no longer with us. BTW, he probably wins the prize for having worked with the most people in that room than anyone else there. Long before he became famous, he was a background singer for Quincy Jones (7:43), the Pointer Sisters (in the chorus, at 8:14), & Michael Jackson himself. He had a duet with Kenny Rogers (2:06) & Kim Carnes (6:24) that was a big hit - a year before this song in 1984. Being a church kid from Akron, he was also a great musician & played many instruments, including playing piano on one of Ray Charles' big hits back in the 1970s. He was also a great songwriter. He co-wrote one of MJ's biggest hits, _"P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing)."_ He won many awards for singing & writing, including several Grammys, & received several Oscar nominations for various songs he did for a number of movies, such as his huge hit with Linda Ronstadt _"Somewhere Out There"_ from the hit movie _An American Tail._ He was a big deal all through the '80s & '90s, & continued performing to packed venues, here & abroad, until his passing in 2019 from brain cancer, at the age of 66. He'll always be loved, admired, & remembered by those of us who love great music! ❤ 🎵
The legend Quincy Jones put it all together. And yes, I believe they all did it for free. All proceeds went to Africa. Amazing song, performance, and purpose.
Harry Belafonte & Ken Kragen (mega talent manager, TV producer, activist & fundraiser) put it together & were in charge. They secured the talent, facilities, staff, etc. Ken contacted Bob Geldof, plus Lionel Ritchie, Kenny Rogers & Kim Carnes (Ken managed all 3), Stevie Wonder & Quincy Jones. Quincy brought MJ on. Harry & Ken then chose Lionel & MJ to write it. Word of the project quickly spread & Ken said he ended up having to turn away dozens of artists. Kenny Rogers owned Lions Share Studios & donated it for the work that was done before & after the "big night."
It’s not even close either there will never be a collective of talent and artists like this This was such a big deal when it came out Africa was going through some tough times and the world literally stopped I remember when it premiered it was incredible
I really like this song! Gives me chills every time I hear it! So much passion! They weren't worried about who's better looking just about who they were going to help.
I love your reaction to this you are fun and made me laugh alot but in 39 years of listening to this I also tear up everything I hear We will never be privileged enough to have these type of legends and greats gather like this again
I loved this reaction!! And that Gumbo was called the 1980’s! 😀🥰 I’d give my one of my toes to go back to how everything was then, 2023.. but still be just like it was in the 80’s/90’s! 😩👍🏼
It was for charity - no one received pay. In fact, a sign was posted on the door stating, "Leave Your Ego Outside" and only one artist who was asked to participate did not (Prince demanded a recording studio to himself and was refused). United Support of Artists for Africa (USA for Africa) was the name under which 47 predominantly U.S. artists recorded the hit single "We Are the World" in 1985. The song was a U.S. and UK number one for the collective in April of that year. USA for Africa also held a benefit event, Hands Across America, in which approximately seven million people held hands in a human chain for fifteen minutes along a path across the continental United States. Participants paid ten dollars to stand in line. The combined revenues raised from the sales of "We Are the World" and Hands Across America was almost $100 million which the USA for Africa Foundation used them for the relief of famine and disease in Africa and specifically for the horrifically deadly 1983-1985 famine in Ethiopia
So glad someone already gave you the list of the amazing artist in this video....... just so much talent that came together when Quincy Jones asked them to... no one bowed out... you can see them all reading the lyrics and music... this was truly put together quickly.. but everyone showed up... and you just said a comment... truly the Dream Team from the 80's...

Lionel Richie does look like for Richard Pryor! Oh my God. I need this guy as a friend. He’s hilarious AF! He just needs to change his lid logo to the Old English D for the Tigers, and we’re all set.

Great. You should also do a reaction to the other charity singles released @ the time for the cause which was to help in raising funds for the famine in Ethiopia @ the time. There is the UK version titled "Do they know it's Christmas" released in 1984 which laid the ground work for the rest including "we r d world" . There is also the Canadian version called "tears are not enough". There is even a Spanish song titled "cantare cantaras" though I don't think it has an English subtitle. There is also a song you should also react to called "that's what friends are for" done in 1986 to raise money and awareness for AIDS. All these songs are great
That song is awesome it embodies the American spirit. Love it don't believe the ish they saying about America trying to tear it apart and destroy its beauty . we are truly blessed to be part of America . U.S.A U.S.A. U.S.A.!!!!!!

FORTY SIX!!!!!!! AND every single artist who participated had number one songs of their own!!!! ALL FORTY SIX singers flew to a secret location - received their parts- practiced their parts AND RECORDED this ALL IN ONE DAY!!!!!!!! FOR FREE!!!! ALL money this song made was given to starving people in Africa - minus 10% that was given to homeless people in USA. PLEASE PLEASE go to Wikipedia to learn ALL the details. Like how this sold 20 million copies and how much money was made. This was directed by the extremely talented genius Quincy Jones. Quincy Jones hung a sing at the door to the studio that said Leave egos here. EVERY SINGLE artist came together out of the kindness & generosity from their heart truthfully, humbly no ill will. This will never again in our history. I was so lucky to be able to witness this in my lifetime. I don't think people today understand the gravity of this miraculous project.
This was made after Bob Geldof asked Quincy Jones to lead the American effort on African aid. Many of the credits are in en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Are_the_World. Written by Michael Jackson + Lionel Richie. Underrated. After the call-and-answer from Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder, notice the ascending vocal belt from the late James Ingram. Singers like Morissette Amon use this technique. RIP to the fallen. The only non-American singing is Dan Akroyd. He is Canadian 🍁, from Toronto, ONT. David Foster, of Victoria, BC, wanted him to sing for the Canadian effort for African relief but American actress Donna Dixon, and wife of DA, and Quincy Jones convinced him otherwise. Some gentle jabbing that two producer/writer QJ did! They still remain friends! LOL Suggested next video: Tears Are Not Enough performed by Northern Lights. This is the Canadian supergroup conducted by David Foster. Bryan Adams, Anne Murray, Geddy Lee + Neil Young are some of the singers. 🇨🇦 Link: ua-cam.com/video/CjRg5bH1Pwg/v-deo.html.
It was made after Harry Belafonte learned of Band Aid's song & felt the US should do something too. Harry contacted Ken Kragen (mega talent manager, TV producer, activist & fundraiser). Harry & Ken were in charge. They secured the talent, facilities, staff, etc. Ken contacted Bob Geldof, plus Lionel Ritchie, Kenny Rogers & Kim Carnes (Ken managed all 3), Stevie Wonder & Quincy Jones. Quincy brought MJ on. Harry & Ken then chose Lionel & MJ to write it. Word quickly spread & Ken said he ended up having to turn away dozens of artists. Kenny Rogers owned Lions Share Studios & donated it for the work that was done before & after the "big night." In a 2009 interview, Dan Akroyd said his involvement was by accident. He & his father were looking for a financial manager. They mistakenly went to a talent manager. When they realized the mistake & were getting ready to leave, the manager (Ken Kragen) asked Dan if he’d like to be a part of the project.
Bob Geldof is listed as a performer too. Did he just play the triangle or something? 🤣 He definitely can't be heard singing, thankfully 😂 I didn't mind him in boomtown rats.
@@WineSippingCowboy Thanks for that. Now it makes sense. Knowing what Akroyd said, I've wondered where the "Foster tried to get him, but Quincy convinced him otherwise" came in. Akroyd wasn't "convinced." He'd just already agreed to the USA project.
40 years ago 🎂, David Foster and Quincy Jones worked on the Thriller album. At the end of recording, the 2 went on separate recording projects. After QJ finished recording We Are the World, he told DF that Bob Geldof needed a supergroup from Canada 🇨🇦 for African relief. DF knew Bryan Adams, Jim Vallance, Loverboy and Prism in the late 1970s and early 1980s up in Vancouver. DF asked their manager Bruce Allen to call up other big names such as Anne Murray, Geddy Lee and Neil Young to pitch in. This was the project that DF wished Dan Akroyd was in. Eugene Levy, Paul Shaffer and the late John Candy came and sang. The making of Tears Are Not Enough has both the sad and very funny moments. With Candy, Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy, they guarantee lots of laughs! L🤣L Glad you got the whole picture! 📷 I hope that the reactor here will watch Northern Lights perform Tears Are Not Enough. The link listed includes names of everyone who sang. 👨🎤👩🎤
I've always wondered why the singer with 6 multiplatinum albums with 23 hit singles was only given one line to sing. Though he is the most shy and humble front man for a supergroup to ever live.
I love you but you should’ve reasearched these singers which made such a difference. Your generation will never really know how my generation embraced every religion race etc. sorry to say the world is doomed 🤬

Some gentle jabbing that two producer/writer QJ did! They still remain friends! LOL
Suggested next video:
Tears Are Not Enough performed by Northern Lights. This is the Canadian supergroup conducted by David Foster. Bryan Adams, Anne Murray, Geddy Lee + Neil Young are some of the singers. 🇨🇦

Kenny Rogers owned Lions Share Studios & donated it for the work that was done before & after the "big night."
In a 2009 interview, Dan Akroyd said his involvement was by accident.
🤣 He definitely can't be heard singing, thankfully 😂
I didn't mind him in boomtown rats.
Good info. 👍
There is a video 📹 where David Foster wanted Dan Akroyd to sing in Northern Lights. But Quincy Jones said, "We got him!"
Glad you got the whole picture!

🥰 what about a reaction to the song that inspired this?
Band Aid - Do they know it's Christmas 1984! 😃
