From Season 2, Episode 10 "Over"
Breaking Bad follows protagonist Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a chemistry teacher who lives in New Mexico with his wife (Anna Gunn) and teenage son (RJ Mitte) who has cerebral palsy. White is diagnosed with Stage III cancer and given a prognosis of two years left to live. With a new sense of fearlessness based on his medical prognosis, and a desire to secure his family's financial security, White chooses to enter a dangerous world of drugs and crime and ascends to power in the world. The series explores how a fatal diagnosis such as White's releases a typical man from the daily concerns and constraints of normal society and follows his transformation from mild family man to a kingpin of the drug trade.

With every second that passed, Walt grew angrier and angrier that he couldn't share any interesting stories with his son, and his only use in that situation was filling up Hank's glass like a waiter. You could tell it was killing him inside to not be able to connect with his son the way Hank could.
Excellent obsrvation skills.
To add on, you also notice that all people have their set failures when it comes to doing what they want and usually it does not stop them from achieving their goals, however Walter ignores that. His disturbed pride of coming from a poor background and engaging with a rich, smart woman like Gretchen decades back kept him from pursuing his goal, and he egotistically skipped out being a potential millionaire and its bcz of that failure he never ascended past being a HS chemistry teacher and always regrets leaving Gray Matter deep down, cause a story of success would topple all of Hanks DEA escapade stories. Even when Hank failed in the special forces feild, he doesn’t feel sorry for himself, he moves on and even reminisces with Flynn as a gesture of confidence. Walter has none and the only one that’s worthy to mention is how he paid his treatment with meth money, yet he had to act like Elliot n Gretchen are too b honored😂
he couldnt. hank was telling a gruesome story from his time as a DEA agent and while Walt has plenty of stories from selling meth, he cant tell them. this is entirely his fault he cant connect with his kid. it goes along with the theme of the show and the downfall of his character. his family never asked for him to do what he did, they asked for him to be a good father/husband.
@@A1_Amir The hell of it is, Walt could've probably gotten back on the saddle by just asking Elliot and Gretchen to give him a job, even without the cancer. Sure, they'd never give Walt power he used to have in the Gray Matter when it started, but I'm willing to bet they'd give Walt a lab to run and some challenging projects.
But no, he couldn't do that, because it would've been "humiliating." So he'd rather cook up a made up story that he was conned by them, anything to avoid admitting it was he who made a mistake by letting his insecurites and ego to rule his life.
@@Ruosteinenknight yeah it wouldve been humiliating af. i felt pity just reading that

@@est.sar.9276 True, but you can't deny that Hank's heart was purer than Walt's. Walt turned pure evil.
@@Ayad321 Walt had always been that way. He enjoyed every step he took over the lines of his morality.
@Goomba That's why I labelled him as "bad".
1:45 the look of pure disgust on walts face is so telling. He fully realizes how much more Flynn looks up to his uncle vs his dad. Walt pours the shot for his son and who does he look at? Hank. Flynn takes the shot and immediately looks to hank asking him questions a son should ask his father, not his uncle.
I think Walt sadistically punished his son for thinking hank was more a “man” than he was.
Edit: appreciate all the comments! As I watch this more I like to think in an alternate breaking bad universe Walt asks Hank to step away from the table as he would like a moment with his son. Walt pours them each a shot of tequila and let’s him know how much he loves his son and is so happy he has more time to spend with him. Walt then does the ultimate cannonball into the pool and everybody jumps in
spot on
I didn't realize that even when he says "what are you looking at him for" but maybe I'm just stupid, thanks for opening my eyes.
Yeah, as much shit as Walt gets for his fragile ego, I feel like no one in his life ever really shows enough appreciation for much of anything he does. I can explain the different meaning of the collors to late if you want :) now back to the pools, the short awnser is the more money and power you have in the criminal world/world, the bigger the pool. It’s a symbol of the different levels of wealth and status. You can see that almost all caracters in the series have pools and they all have different sizes depending of how much power and money they have, Don eladio had the biggest pool, Walt had the smallest. Obviously Bryan Cranston is incredible, but man Dean Norris *really* caught me off guard when I first watched this series. His character was just that typical annoying boomer that we all have in our lives, but over the course of the show he becomes soooo complex & you become extremely sympathetic toward him. Obviously that’s because of incredible writing but his acting just makes it perfect.
Actually in an interview, Vince Gilligan confirmed Dean Norris is the reason Hank became as complex as he was. He was initially written very schematic as you say, but because Dean Norris is apparently a very smart and eloquent person, they just naturally started writing Hank that way too (he said it was never even a discussion, it just subconsciously happened).
I like how Walt's behaviour goes from snark, to barely disguised anger, to open hostility. Everytime the mood gets worse I wonder how Walt is supposed to come back from it. But then Flynn steps in like the featherweight hero he is.
Realistic speaking, the scene only deescalates because it ends here. Walt just couldn't stand JR looking up to Hank. The ego of that mofo was the cause of his ruin
Not being a role model to your son is the biggest insult for a father. That's why WW went jealous and poured his son's cup just to please him. That's what people who struggle with their emotions do the most. No words, just action.
This theory is somewhat contradicted by Walt's smug smile as his son retches his stomach contents into the pool. Walt was punishing his son for admiring Hank, not trying to please him.
@@jschnei3 punishing his son? Interesting way to make his son stop admiring Hank. In the end Walt Jr. will remember how Hank tried to stop WW from pouring his glass which would make him admire Hank even more.

@@rocx_tour_once_saidexcept Walt Jr still ends up drinking the third shot that was poured. And proudly says that he did the next day when Walt apologized to Jr for his behavior. Walt Jr doesn’t really care about how Hank tried to stop it and I don’t think the whole point of this scene was to make sure that Jr respected Walt more than Hank. I think it was more to show how Walt didn’t like how inferior he felt in that moment seeing how much Jr admired Hank compared to his own father. That’s why Walt poured Jr a drink to show that he could be badass too and then flipped on Hank after Hank tried to stop him. It’s why he didn’t help Jr when he started puking too. Walt just cared about being in power and it’s what he got when he stood up and scared Hank. He realized he had shifted the power back to him, causing him to sit back and smile while sipping his drink, hearing his son puke in the background while his wife and brother-in-law tried helping him out.

I feel like Walt jr is old enough to know that literally absolutely anywhere is better to throw up than in the pool
Walt with that smug look downing that last one while jr hurls in the background always makes me laugh
When walt narcicism kicks in. He got a huge ego problem
I think a piece of context everyone is forgetting here is that this is right after he got the "good" news of his cancer being in remission with his tumor reducing in mass by 80%.
Then with this party he feels himself reverting back to the meek Walt persona we saw in The Pilot.
He didn't want to return to being the unnoticed, weak, insignificant guy while Hank was the life of the party again. If Walt is healthy he blends into the background again and has less of an excuse to be a criminal in his mind. Hank bonding with Junior just rubbed salt in the wound. It was like he was saying "Fuck this I am not going back to being the old Walt AND my son should look up to me, or at the very least obey what I say even if it makes him puke."
You know, that's actually a fantastic point.
walt jr really broke bad
This comment deserves way more likes
He broke bad when he didn’t get his breakfast
Hank is such a good uncle. Maybe mildly weird and odd but deep down loves you and will look out for you
Walt’s facial expressions are priceless
Gonna be honest, I didn’t realize Walt was drunk when watching this scene like the other comments are mentioning. I thought it was pretty clear that this scene was to show how Walt didn’t like how powerless he felt as he watched his son look up to Hank and was clear and sober in mind about his thoughts in that moment. Plus, showing how much Heisenberg was bleeding into his normal life, like in the scene where he starts talking to the person buying drug stuff at the hardware store in this episode or the next one. Walt didn’t like how the power had shifted, making Walt feel inferior as he watched his son care so much about what Hank had to say. That’s why Walt didn’t help Walt Jr when he started puking in the pool. I don’t think he really cared what Walt Jr was doing, he just cared about the power shift. That’s why he went backing to drinking with a smug smile after sizing up Hank. Walt knew that Hank was scared in that moment. And that made him feel good
Itmoght probably be his medicine fused with the alcohol as well
Also jr not only kept looking at Hank but before Hank started making commands as if he’s his father he noticed that he only touched cups with Hank which put him over the edge.
The "what are you looking at him for?!" always cracked me up
When I first saw this scene, I didn’t understand why Walt kept giving Walt Jr. a bunch of tequila. My guess is that he was getting upset by hearing all the stuff Hank was telling Walt Jr. about because Walt knows what Hank is talking about.
No, he didn’t like the fact that Hank was bragging like he was a hero and his son was admiring hank more. Also Hank telling Walt pour me a drink showing a bit of disrespect to Walt
@@TheStatisfiedOne Yeah Walt’s just trying to show dominance over Hank
@@TheStatisfiedOne I think you're right. When I first saw this I understood why Walt was pissed off but I didn't understand why he was doing this with Jr. Now I get it - I think you're spot on.
also its he's Heisenberg persona slipping into he's normal life
@TheStatisfiedOne Yep, I'd also add that he's more frustrated that he can't really brag about being a hero to Jr.
This is an absolute masterclass in acting. One of the most dynamic, authentic scenes we ever witnessed play out on this incredible show!
Every Thanksgiving dinner with my toxic family.
Same here dude. I seriously think Thanksgiving is the worst holiday created.
I still can't believe Walt Jr. defused the situation by drinking the worm. Real class act!
Poor Junior.
Open na noor
The guy who plays Hank is a great actor
Shaquile O’Neal
His name is Sean Wright
Jonathan Banks
Samuel L Pacino
It's Hank.... his name is Hank
I love this scene. At first it's such a fun bonding moment between father son and uncle but then it gets really bad
Fuck I really need to rewatch it from the beginning. One of the best shows ever!!!! The acting was phenomenal!
Absolutely ❤
Walt could have stopped at the first fill of Flynn's cup, and it would have been a wholesome family moment where he would have gained approval from Flynn as his "cool" dad as well as stolen the spotlight from Hank for just a bit. But no. He just had to turn this whole thing into one of the top 10 cringe scenes.
Yeah because he is an insecure asshole
I swear that this scene looks more like a documentary or some real recording, rather than an acting scene. The level of acting is just too realistic, it's incredible.
2:33 We're celebrating. 🥃🥃🥃
Mikes "you are trouble" line to Walt hits again here. Interesting that after creating that scene Walt seems pleased like "Yep, i did that"
This is the moment when Walter become drunk.
The scene before this one, when everyone’s inside the house and Skyler was making a toast. Walt seemed fine I guess (not entirely) but he was playing a long with everything until Skyler mentioned in her toast Gretchen and Elliot, and thanked them for “paying” most of the treatment (which I found unnecessary to mention to be honest) and in that moment Walt’s face changed, and pride and ego took over him. Which I really think that led to the behavior of Walt on this scene!
My point of view!
Yeah mentioning that is too much, that’s gonna hurt any guy’s pride.
When people say they rooted for Walt over Hank in the final season, I show them this scene
This is the tail end of a life of repression, pent-up frustration, regrets and more regrets; a life in which one has had minimal say, little agency and commanded minimal respect. This is the result of great potential tragically unrealized. It never manifested as creation, and will now manifest as destruction.
His son, his bottle, his house!
I don’t know why but I love this scene it’s one of my top favorite moments of the show.
It was Hank’s condescension that set Walt off.
It was always Hank’s condescension and arrogance that Walt hated.
True. Here Hank is once again bragging about what a big man he is in front of Walt, this time to his own son who is absolutely captivated by Hank.
Or walt is just insecure
@@solidsalt3412 It's both.
@@westonstevens3239W.W knew Hank was traumatized from that & he wasn’t this big shot like he was acting like in front of jr😂 that + Walter was obviously jealous of how his son looks up to Hank
@@solidsalt3412 It is not insecurity to hate condescension.
This scene is so hard to watch without cringing.
3:36 when your friend takes away your n-word pass
😂😂
The development of Hank from unbearable uncle to hero of the show is one of the greatest turns of writing in history
Hank was pretty decent for going along with that first shot, if Walt had left it there, they all would have had a better bro-ship between them afterward. He just had to power trip, typical Waltenburg
The first minute of this clip is hilarious to me cause Dean portrays the cool, goofy uncle so well in such a realistic way. Especially that “poetic” line.
I was gonna make a joke about Jr. being a lightweight when it comes to drinking but then I saw they were drinking tequila so his reaction was the most believeable. I can drink a gallon of beer no problem but give me a shot of tequila and I would puke just like the Junior.
I’m the complete opposite lmao
I know vodka isn't tequila but they're about the same level of alcohol. Drank half a bottle of 50 vodka once, puked my guts out and had the worst hangover of my life.
@@masonf7332 Yeah, tequila is pretty nasty. Also judging by the large plastic bottle, it looks like some real cheap shit...
This really shows the monster Walt is underneath. A man with a ridiculous ego, who is more interested in asserting dominance over his son than showing him love. Despite Hank's brash personality, you see he really cares for Junior here and was a much better man than Walt.
Reminds me of my first drinks ever. My uncle would slip me a beer secretly every now and again at 16 on special occasions. I never threw up though because it was always just one.
And then, when you were asleep, your uncle went under the covers and touched you and you didn’t even notice lol

Despite how much Walt loved Hank, he also felt emasculated over shadowed by him at times. I think on some level Walt was frustrated that he couldn't let Hank to know that he was Heisenberg, the badass criminal mastermind that was outwitting him at every turn.
Perfect cast.
