Also, one of my older Male friends fixed up one of his friend's old sewing machine, and was surprised and fellow easy it was (the mechanics are apparently a simplified version of the automobiles at the time). He loved restoring old cars, so the skills were already there. He taught himself to sew in a few minutes and made himself a spiffy casual outfit.
If you have similar skills (to driving older/classic cars), sewing might be easier than you think.

I have been chronically ill for a decade, and been bed bound for many years within that decade. I wear matching granddad jammies all the time, shorts and a blouse in summer, then the traditional ones the rest of the year. They make me feel better about myself when my body is making me feel horrific. 10,000/10 would recommend
I love the philosophy of putting cute pajamas or nightgown on each night for bed or when you're sick. I remember when I was pregnant & felt so big & a friend said a pretty gown would make me feel better & it really did. Love the story about your grandpa always looking nice even for bed. Those are memorable good impressions he made on his granddaughter!😊
100% agree. ❤️ Before I started sewing, I’d collect the frilliest Zaza Gabor-style vintage loungewear I could find. It makes me so happy to float around in them, lol. Now, I get to sew in them! Truly, it’s my dream to make a 4 season capsule wardrobe. Slowly but surely. Can’t wait to be able to be as immersive as vintage girlies like you!

My grandparents and my dad all wore tops and bottoms that matched. Mom was more into nightgowns. I had both growing up and I made both of my sons' pajamas when they were young. That fabric is really pretty. I've used french seams on lingerie and on fabrics that had a tendency to ravel. They make a nice finish. About a year ago I ordered flannel pajamas just to see if they'd be warmer in my 100 year old house and they were, but I found a flannel bed jacket I'd made my dad 30 years ago when he was hospitalized and started wearing that with them. What a difference. I was toasty all night. I just used a kimono style robe pattern and made it just so it would cover his back. We were the same height so it fits me about the same. I know exactly what you mean. When I retired, I started collecting in the nicest pajamas I could afford. And I had the same thought in mind: just because I m lounging around the house does not mean I don't have to look good. You never know who's gonna come to the door (I have a lot of things delivered now)
Also Like you, I have matching everything to go with my Jim jams: slippers, socks, scarves, & robes.
But what I did to keep it all matching effortlessly is to keep it all to the same color scheme. Pink, Red, Gray & Black. That way no matter what accoutrements you wear with your "sleeping suit", it will always be stylish.
I like those colors pink red grey and black.

You look beautiful as always! There’s a lot to be said for the easy timeless elegance of well made and lovely pajamas to lift your spirits and make you feel pulled together. Like your Grandfather, my Dad also wore classic pajamas…typically navy with ivory piping or white with navy piping and always wore a coordinated bathrobe when he came from my Parents bedroom. Sweet memories. The print you chose is beautiful and they look cool and crisp for the hot summer months. 💜

I was born in 61. I remember having something made of a similar fabric. I believe mine was pink. You chose the perfect fabric!

I had shortie pj's just like these in blue. And I made my daughter some in the 80s or early 90s from a vintage pattern in the pink/rose!

I used to be a lazy bedtime person who wore like my tshirt but have puppies now and a matching pj set is a game changer. Meets public decency in my front yard but also its so much easier to get ready for bed when i have a drawer of pjs. Old people know things!
I love how often you use yellow in the garments you sew! It’s my favorite color. 50’s and 60’s clothing brings back happy memories for me as I was born in the 50’s. Especially when I see you cooking in your fantastic kitchen I have memories of my mom who always was in a dress, brooch & lipstick on and a cute apron tied at her waist when she was in the kitchen. ❤ I do feel better even if unwell when I make the effort to either get dressed or have a nice nightie and robe on. So I agree with you there!💛

I started wearing vintage pajamas, either ones I’ve sewn or purchased vintage, and it’s truly changed my mood so many times and just makes me happy. I love this set and the fabric is perfect!
I completely agree with you. I have collected vintage nightgowns for years because I feel better in them. I also just never felt ready for bed until I have my nightgown on. I personally still feel dressed if I try to wear things like sweat suits to bed. The fact that vintage nightwear is just beautiful is a bonus. On the other hand, I do understand people who can't wear them. I have been told by some people that they can't wear vintage nightgowns because they wake up tangled in them.
Dear lady you and I have hand crank sewing machines. Good for you. Your choice of pajamas by the way is like what I chose for my school home economic project, used them for years and wore them out.

I love your shorty pjs Serena. I was just thinking you could add both a pair of long pants and ¾ pants to that set. Edge the hems of the ¾ pants in a green satin ribbon.
Also, adding 2 pockets on the top would be nice. One on either side at belly button height.

I have a book entitled Sewing Lingerie, and it includes lots of guidance on pajamas. It’s a Singer Sewing Book. Not that you need any guidance!
The book helped me the first time I made my own panties. It has step-by-step photos of how to do that weird rolling thing for the completely enclosed crotch.

This vid speaks to me. Due to chronic fatigue I spend most of my time in bed, in boring modern pajamas. Historical costuming is my jam, and I was just wondering about making more historical PJs, since it's the majority of the clothes I wear.

I love vintage machines they are very forgiving to beginners. I’ve done some things to my kenmore that would have ruined a modern machine while learning. 70’s Kenmore’s or older are wonderful. If you choose singer 60’s or older

This year I declared that I wouldn’t go to bed In old tshirts or shorts. I began to buy silky pajama sets or silky nightgowns and it was exactly for your reasoning! You just feel better! You wake up better your skin feels better! It’s just better!!!

Yes I understand the “ feeling better” when I’m sick by wearing something nice. I call it “ feeling human” even if I don’t really, it helps ground me.

Plant some LEMON Balm to ward off mosquitos. You can grab couple os leaves, xrush them in your hands, then rub your arms and legs to ward them off pesticide free. Jammies are sooooooo cute, love that yellow floral print too💚💚💚
You have made very valid points about why to have nice sleepwear. Growing up, mom rarely let us call in sick from the bed - we had to get up, have breakfast, try to get ready, before she'd accept, "I'm too sick to go to school." I was super stubborn, so I always said I still felt bad, but have to admit, it often did make me feel better. As someone who hasn't worked since 2005 because of a disability, the importance of good sleepwear is even greater, as it often winds up being 24 hour wear. I noticed that the closer to "real clothes" my sleepwear is, the more I accomplish, and the cuter it is, the better I feel. We didn't have a lot of money growing up, so one of the things I associate with "good living" is matching sets and tailored clothes. To this day, I get excited if my socks and undies match my outfit lol. In the 80s, I inherited some of my grandmother's old baby doll sets, and their effect was almost magical. I was a punk/new wave awkward teen, feeling very unloved and unsure of who I was. Wearing these sweet, feminine, cutesy pjs made me feel like a safe, loved, cherished little girl again. It's amazing the effect clothes have on us. I just wore overalls for the first time in probably 45 years yesterday, and must have gotten a dozen compliments from strangers - since my figure is nothing to brag about, it had to be the attitude they gave me lol. Wear what brings you joy! Wear what makes you smile! Wear what you love! And remember, what you're wearing now will be your wardrobe for your entire ghost existence if you die :P LOL

My sense of "style" tends to be more "varied" than "replicated".
I also appreciate well "matched" things, especially on other people (the exact same ...color/image/design, etc...) so, I do love how well you do it!
I do enjoy seeing "matching" on other people. To me, personally, picking colors &/or patterns that genuinely complement and welcome one another is a different sort of "matching". like you, I understand, accept, and support that each person usually has their own way of "thinking"

I think waking up wearing something "presentable" gives me more get up and go. I feel more energised and I am more likely to pu5 on real clothes and be productive. If I wear just track pants or whatever I am more likely to just stay wearing them.
Similarly, I've lived in my jeans and t-shirts for years. I have a job now where I can wear (need to wear) jeans and Ts. I finally got tired of jeans and Ts and bought light sweaters and nice leggings to wear as pjs, but as they are also "day wear" clothes, if I have a day when I can stay home or don't want to get dressed right away, I still look presentable in "nice clothes,' and no-one knows the difference.
I agree with you. I decided to upgrade my sheets, get satin pillow cases, new pillows, matching sets of pajamas in different weight fabrics and styles, slippers, new socks and underwear and it has made going to bed more relaxing and luxurious and helps me sleep better. I always aspired to have all matching sets of pajamas and finally invested and I definitely feel more elevated, put together and relaxed as well. Like you said, I enjoy what I see in the mirror and it makes me feel good
Great idea to make all French seams. Raw seams will unravel and ultimately destroy the garment, especially one that is worn and washed a lot, especially with lightweight fabric!
“Homemade” garments so often fail in that respect.
I see someone already mentioned bed jackets. I think they can be so pretty while being practical. I like a cold bedroom but in the winter it’s chilly sitting up while reading (I’m a hot sleeper and therefore wear light weight pjs).
I have some fabric my great grandmother’s friend gave us years ago and have hated to cut into it. This would be perfect 😊
I don't think it was a "tick" that your grandfather had regarding him matching his tops and bottoms PJs, he sounds like he was a classy well put together man, who knew style and uniformity.
I've loved vintage since I was 11 and when I was 12 an older lady I was close to gifted me some probably vintage nightgowns she didn't wear anymore/she never used. I used them for a couple years but then I stopped because they were very sheer, they weren't comfortable and they were not breathable and I came back to my modern pajamas. Now that I can sew can try to make a pajama that's vintage AND suits my needs so I can feel pretty even when I just woke up
A word of advice:
You should always wear something cute to bed because you never know who you will meet in your dreams!
You should make a disclaimer that you are not responsible for any old guys (that the algorithm selects) if they have a heart attack.

I started with vintage pajamas. They look good in cotton or linen, which are easier for me to sew, as a beginner. I get to add gussets, so I have full range of movement in a breathable, comfortable fabric. They look so nice, on top of being practical. I prefer them over modern pajamas that say "Do not dry," on the tags.
I loved hearing about your grandparents! I agree that it feels great to look nice for yourself. I really appreciate your views in light of our current society where women have largely lost their femininity. Personally, I think stretch fabrics have been the worst invention for women. I think that when women wore more natural fibers, that lack of stretch reminded us to be more conscious of our form. People will hate my opinion, but this is what I think. I applaud you for all of your efforts and your lovely feminine style!!!

Nice pjs! I like nice sleepware with the only difference being, I have to buy them. I do sew by hand but sleepwear is out. In the past I altered my clothes by hand.

I second your idea on nice pjs. It is absolutely true. I take extra showers if changing into my nice pjs. When I sit around in sweats and tees I am less productive and a bit slovenly. It doesn’t elevate the day/night at all.

Aw this came out so good I hope I can develop the sewing skills to make this at some point. Most of my pyjamas are so ugly and I’ve not been able to justify spending money on nicer sets but I feel so much better when I’m wearing nice ones.

I'm currently making a vintage night gown in matching fabric to a vintage short sleeve, shorts, and pants set that I made. I have a porch and I too made it in mind for sitting out there. I decided to make the nightgown so I have a whole little matching pajama collection. I love how this turned out! Maybe I'll post mine when I'm done too!

Your grandpa was etched onto you. That is why it is important to hang out with good people. I have the store bought style of this sleep wear and it is classic. I remember this style was popular when I was a kid. I have not been a kid for along time.
I have had a vintage pajama on my table for a month while also sewing my dress for Chicago frocktails. My dress is done but I have 6 days and still have to finish hubby vest and now there is an all white party so I need to push the pajamas aside again. I am going to be tired cause I know I am going to have do long nights if I want them in my suitcase.

Home sewn clothing wears like iron. You can wash them over and over.
