  • In May of 2023, Darren Harrison, a Florida man with no flying experience, managed to land a plane after his pilot, Ken Allen, experienced a midflight medical emergency. The two reunite live on TODAY and share a heartfelt hug. Dr. Nishant Patel, Allen’s cardiac surgeon, describes how Allen’s condition, an aortic dissection often occurs without any warning.

    Wow, survival after an aortic dissection is more unlikely than surviving a novice non-pilot landing of an aircraft. An amazingly unlikely outcome from both unexpected events.

    Amazing story. But who was in the co pilot seat when Darren was just lounging? And why did that person just hand off the controls to a complete novice?

    • @samethstarr
      @samethstarr 5 місяців тому

      Apparently the person in the co pilot seat was a friend of the pilot, not a pilot himself. He also didn't have any flying experience, he was another passenger. Darren jumped to take charge and was keeping a level head, so it made sense to defer to him. He was apparently a big help though, it wasn't like he was curled up in the back crying or anything. There was only one working headset though, so while Darren was able to listen to instructions from air traffic control, the other guy couldn't hear the instructions to assist effectively.
