    Some have complained about this moment because they think that the UED weren’t that bad and there wouldn’t be any reason for Jim to work with Arcturus over them.
    It seems likely to me that the reason for it was cultural bias. Jim and everyone else in the sector are descendants of the “undesirables” that were shipped off to die somewhere in space by the UED. Jim considers them worse than Arcturus because he’s been taught that they were the worst people ever (which isn’t necessarily wrong).
    Thus, It’d be like if the Nazis had shipped off some of the Jews into space, only for a Nazi fleet to show up there a few hundred years later. Every other grudge would be set aside until that threat was dealt with.

    • @crimsonlanceman7882
      @crimsonlanceman7882 3 роки тому +12

      The thing about UED was that it was an outside force coming with the orders to pacify any and all resistance. They greatly outmatched the Terran Dominion, robbed of their homeworld Protoss and decimated Zerg army, and any other smaller faction combined. So, Raynor and others, including Kerrigan and Mengsk, naturally understood that it doesn't matter who wins here, as long as UED remains undefeated, they are going to long-termly lose.
      However, it would have been a very weird twist if the Protoss, who have nothing else to lose, Jim Raynor, who is a wanted criminal by the dominion, the main Terran government, would prefer to work together with the UED rather than have to struggle with the everything else later on.
      However, if that did happen, we wouldn't have that much of a story, because UED would just win, the story would end, and everyone would live unhappily ever after under the UED's heel.

      @Noplayster13 9 місяців тому +1

      @@Vanderyn It might have been a while since you played through the game. It’s never outright stated, you’re right, but it’s implied strongly all throughout the campaigns.
      The opening cinematic implies very strongly just what kind of people the UED is made up of. Rewatch it and you’ll remember.
      At the end of the UED campaign, they broadcast a propaganda video which is all lies and would 1984 blush.
      When Raynor asks Kerrigan why he should work with her and Mengsk, all she says is, “You know the history of Earth… they’ll enslave us all.” …and then he, the best, most righteous man in the whole series, *agrees to get the Zerg and Mengsk back on their feet* in order to avoid their control.
      That’s some VERY heavy implication to the player that the history (and present) of Earth is *BAD.*

      The UED was very much a totalitarian regime, if you look at the history of the United Powers League Story in the book its tells you how Nasty the guys running the government really were.
      They changed their name to the UED once the zerg and protoss were discovered.
      Kerrigan knew the UED were a major threat to her, due to their mission to enslave the zerg and use them to pacify the protoss. I think Stukov out of all of the UED Characters was the only one who really saw the bigger picture and Kerrigan respected him allot more then She did Admiral Du Gaulle.

The only good thing about the wraith (cloak) was rendered pretty useless by the abundance of detection in SC1; it's only use is against total noobs who forgot to make observers or comsat stations.
      As an aside, it was completely asinine that the Wraith was classified as a "heavy" unit, despite having zero armor and relatively low hp. This means it took full damage against every opponent except ghosts, whereas its closest analogues were either considered light (mutas) or had armor and much more hp (scouts).

    I'm sorry why is everyone here's complaining about SC2's story line here, whilst they just ignoring the massive plot hole in this scene. That plot hole for those who haven't noticed yet is the fact that the UED haven't done anything wrong. They've literally come to the sector, dethroned Mensk a known tyrant and pushed the psychopathic zerg to the point of never being a threat again. Yet Raynor seeing this becomes all afraid for no reason that he's willing to ally with Kerrigan and save Mensk for no reason.
    Anyone got a solution as to how to swallow this, and don't try and say that Kerrigan warned Raynor that she knew what they were capable off. Since when has she been trustworthy?

    Plot hole I disliked the most in Brood War had nothing to do with the UED. But how Kerrigan, having imprisioned Arcturus, let him free but seconds later betray everyone and kills Edmund Duke and Phoenix. Like? Why not? kill? Arcturus too?
    IMHO just a way to not shortening the story. Not reason for Kerrigan not to kill Arcturus when she had her chance, she could have pretty much destroyed the whole terran government, thus leaving the Zergs as perhaps the dominant race in the sector.

    • @rookie564
      @rookie564 5 років тому +13

      SC1's characterization of Kerrigan makes her out to be an extremely vindictive person. What she wanted to do was to put Arcturus under her figurative heel knowing that at any time she could come and wipe him and his trashed dominion. To do this she kills Edmund Duke who she believes is the one that's putting in the footwork for enforcing and training the armies of Mengsk's Dominion. By killing Duke, Mengsk is extremely vulnerable for a while until he can find a replacement, finding people qualified as well as loyal to handle the formation and training of your multi-planet military is difficult. His Dominion is also trashed two times over by the end of Brood War and it's only by author retcon that Korhal is a prosperous core planet of humanity in SC2 despite being a nuclear wasteland in SC1.
      She does something similar to Zeratul by letting him live, taking great pleasure in seeing Zeratul tarnish his honor by killing his matriarch by his own hand, despite Zeratul being one of the few people in the universe who could actually kill her one on one.
      Fenix' death is a bit out there, but it seemed more to cut the links Raynor had to the Protoss fleet since she didn't want to kill Raynor himself. Kerrigan admits that Raynor and Fenix are extremely resourceful. Raynor is a brilliant commander and leader but he has so much bad publicity to the eyes of the rest of humanity thanks to Arcturus that he can't resupply or fund his rebel group. If he still has Fenix with him he can tap into the some of the Protoss forces thanks to Fenix's influence as an extremely popular war hero with personal connections to Artanis who ends up leading the surviving Protoss by the end of Brood War because of his retconned achievements as the player character in SC1.

    Everyone trows shit at SC2 plot, but this moment is ridiculous. To save Mengsk for freaking what? He just lost his army, fleet, almost everything but a small group of high-ranked officers and those psi-emitters which kinda useless at this moment. By rescuing him Raynor and Fenix(!!!) uncovered Aiur's location to the UED and brought it just there.

      He was rescued because Kerrigan wanted him to be rescued. She noticed the UED was crushing resistance in the sector, and anticipated their conquest of it. So she planned ahead and rallied allies to her cause to prepare for a counter-attack. Mengsk had the Psi Emitters, and she figured they might be useful judging by the UED's Overmind enslaving agenda.

      Because of Mengsk's knowledge of the Zerg-control technology and now-captured Dominion territory. Plus, Raynor would rather ally with Arcturus than the UED (Kerrigan mentions in one of the Chapter VI briefings that Raynor knows what the UED are capable of and that they must be stopped), despite how much he hates him.

      At the time, the Protoss/Raynor were allied with Kerrigan, because they believed the UED was a greater threat. Kerrigan directly asked Raynor to do this, ostensibly the only reason being, to gain access to the psi-emitters she needed to keep control of her swarm. In truth, given what we know from SC2, she also wanted to keep Mengsk alive so she could kill him herself.
      The whole story in Brood War is about how Kerrigan managed to manipulate multiple factions (all of which were her enemies) into destroying her *other* enemies, and then betrayed them all, and ended up as Queen of Blades.

      nope still makes no fucking sense. how could the UED possibly be worse than the dominion?
      why would raynor ally with the dominion which he despised and had personal vebdetta against??
      why the fuck did kerrigan betray the protoss when they had nothing against her???

      Kerrigan betrayed her allies in True Colors scenario because they outlived their usefulness, but were too dangerous to just let them walk away without injury. Mengsk relied on strategic military prowess of Duke so she killed him and dealt heavy losses to Dominion's army. She didn't kill Mengsk as a cruel mercy - same case as Zeratul. However Protoss - they are powerful enemies, and her dialogue with Fenix suggests she is still salty about Tassadar making her look like a total fool.

    Whoever sees no problem in the Protoss, Raynor, Kerrigan, Mengsk Alliance against the UED has no right to complain about the 3-way alliance against Amon.

      Were there really people complaining about that? As far as i saw, it was SC2-s subpar writing that people had an issue with. Especially Heart of the Swarm, where Kerrigan is treated like the designated hero, but it just does not works well with her actions and the situation.

      @@_Muzolf I don’t think the writers wanted Sarah to come across as heroic in HOTS. Her entire motivation is selfish and she’s willing to sacrifice countless lives for her revenge. It was only in the last few missions that she has a change of heart and decides to go easy on the Dominion’s citizens. Of course, that’s only because she found out that Jim was alive.
      So she has a character arc which continues into LOTV. I won’t say that it was well done, of course.

      @@Noplayster13 Maybe they didn't, maybe they did. The part where Valerian complains about evacuation of civilians on Korhal and she does end up letting him do it leans heavily on the did part, as does her moment with general Warfield. And those are spotlighted enough to be an obvious attempt at trying to make her look like the hero, problem is, the game casually mentions her ordering her broodmothers to destroy entire worlds. I don't think the makers really think those trough.

      @@_Muzolf She’s not meant to come across as a hero though. She’s meant to come across as morally ambiguous.
      Letting the Korhal civilians go is part of her character arc. The moment with Warfield was only meant to show that she still has some humanity left within her. Killing the Protoss colonists was, in her mind, self defense.
      It’s unknown whether that planet was inhabited by any significant civilian population. Given her personality, it was likely a military target (bases, factories, anchorages, etc.). She didn’t want a fleet to show up behind her when she was landing everything on Korhal. Still probably killed a lot of civilians there though.
      She gradually *becomes* heroic starting near the end of HOTS and then on into LOTV. She starts as a villain, becomes a morally conflicted person out for revenge, and then “dies” a hero. It’s a pretty classic character arc.

      @@Noplayster13 Well, i guess that works. For me the problem was, i pretty much lost interest in the story by the time it got to that. The fact that i hated how her relationship with Jim was presented as if Brood Wars never happened, did not help either.
