I too remember Lakeside Shopping Centre like this because I too was growing up in Essex in the 1990s. (And I still live in Essex now, in the same town). I was 9 years old when Lakeside Shopping Centre first opened. I first went to Lakeside in 1991. (It had first opened at the end of 1990). And by God I think Lakeside was so much more beautiful back then in the 1990s than it is now. They've completely changed Lakeside Shopping Centre now. And this old Lakeside that is being shown in this video, I miss this old Lakeside so much. I think to myself, why aren't I going to that Lakeside anymore? Sadly Lakeside has been completely transformed now. It's a completely different place now.
I remember in the 80's seeing this as kid being built, when going to Lakeside retail park opening in 1986 + seeing the construction men walking around with hard hats on then in 1987 building work began!
When lakeside looked fantastic and the experience was unrivaled. Totally soul less now. I remember Brompton walk and the nice stores there and the Warner Bros cinemas. They had the marketplace, fountains, events on during the day. It was an experience not just a shopping trip.
Agreed. Perfectly said. Beautifully put. You've taken the words right out of my mouth. What you have said is exactly what I say. Lakeside was fantastic back then, absolutely beautiful and absolutely gorgeous. And yes, the experience was unrivaled. And yes, it was an experience and not just a shopping trip back then. I too remember Brompton Walk, the cinema, Action Stations, the waterside shopping beyond Brompton Walk. I loved the fountains and the sight and sound of all that water. There were lovely green plants too - the plants were lovely even if they were artificial. It was a paradise back then in the 1990s. I was 9 when I first went to Lakeside in 1991. My aunt came on holiday to England from Bangladesh in 1991 and my mother took her to Lakeside, and she was so happy and grateful. She said that my mother had brought her to a really nice place. I feel like crying because it's not like that anymore. How I wish that old Lakeside would come back. You're right: it is totally souless now.
I remember going twice during opening week and thinking it was the most marvellous place (I was 11). I miss The Pavilion and had my first part-time job in Brompton Walk in 1995. It had real character then. The smell of the food from Wok ‘n’ Roll outside the cinema, the fountains and food court. Getting the best mocha and sandwiches at In’gred’i’ents (where the big Starbucks is now), popping in for a French bowl of filter coffee when Costa opened, and spending hours in Middle Earth Crafts on the top floor. Cinema evenings in my 20’s with drinks in Mamma Amalfi’s, followed by trying to catch a glimpse of the DeLorean that someone often parked in the Debenham’s multi-storey car park. I actively avoid the place now…it’s just not the same 😞
That's EXACTLY EXACTLY EXACTLY what I say!!! Wow!!! You've taken the words right out of my mouth!!! I've literally got nothing more left to say because you have said EXACTLY what I say. If I say anything, I'll only be repeating verbatim everything that you have said.
That's exactly what I say. It's crap now without the fountains and the plants. I miss both the fountains and the plants so much. Lakeside now in the present is so bland and mundane and dull and lifeless and souless. I go there on a regular basis to do my shopping because I live just 20 minutes to half an hour away from Lakeside. But by God, I don't enjoy it so much anymore like I used to in the 1990s when I was a child and a teenager.
@@ranazaman6121 yeah its pretty soulless in there now. Definitely more modern, but nowhere near as warm and inviting as it used to look back in the day. I used to go to toy stack in there when I was a kid. Good times
Wow this is so cool! Made me feel a bit emotional as this is how I remember Lakeside, growing up in Essex, in the 90s.
