@@tansoon8257 Galloway ran a campaign on being a protest candidate against Labour. While I have no doubt that he peeled some votes away from Labour, those who tended to vote for him were already frustrated with the party; it's possible that he ended up taking more votes from the Tories or picked up votes from lots of people who otherwise wouldn't have voted at all, particularly as he also ran a campaign which leaned heavily on being socially conservative, so would have had some appeal with people who might have leaned Tory

I think it’s a bit of an oversight to ignore the previous election results: Labour had a big spike in 2017, winning 55.5% of the vote. This decreased to 42.7% in 2019, similar to the result in 2015 (43.2%). This year, Labour received only 35.3% of the vote, and only 323 votes more than the Tories. This only seems like a victory for Starmer’s Labour because they’ve done so terribly in previous by-elections. The Chesham and Amersham by-election showed that people are looking for alternatives to the Tories, and they don’t find Labour appealing.

Completely agreed. Our media seem to be framing this as a win for Labour but the numbers show the complete opposite. Labour lost 9000 votes compared to 2019 in this seat. Looking at the trend if they had held the election in 2 months time Labour would have lost.
I now dont think Labour will ever change. They are the party of the rich London media organisations it seems and they wont allow them to stray too far from their divisive "woke" formula. It will take another party pushing them into 3rd place before anything changes.

@Daniel Stovell honestly I'm not sure who would be best right now, which is quite a depressing situation to be in. Andy Burnham seems like a popular choice who a lot of people say they would prefer as leader, he isn't afraid of setting out a clear vision, and what he's doing for Manchester is clearly working well enough that he just got re-elected as Mayor of Manchester with an increased majority of 67% of the vote in the recent local elections when most Labour councils did very poorly. He seems like someone who could potentially get both wings of the party behind him, and he's Co-operative Party, which I'm a fan of. Unfortunately as he's currently a Mayor rather than an MP I believe that he's technically not eligable to lead the party 😒
I also like Clive Lewis as he is one of the only Labour MPs who I know openly backs electoral reform for a more proportional system, which I think is extremely important

Democracy ONLY works with 2 candidates. The reality of democracy is that only one person can sit in each seat of power and the nature of human beings is to fear the negatives more than to pursue the positives and as such democracy will boil down to people voting AGAINST the candidate they FEAR the most rather than FOR the candidate they LIKE the most. Anything beyond that tends to just be people trying to justify their decisions as it’s exceedingly rare that candidates emerge that are actually what people would want to vote for.
The most effective form of government is one virtuous person at the head of a nation supported by talented and loyal advisors. That is remarkably rare, historically speaking, so we settled on Democracy, which is about the least effective form of government that exists but it’s also the one that most insulates the country against the excesses of bad leadership… at the cost of doing the same for good leadership. Naturally over time this has had a deleterious effect on the way people engage with politics and the types of politicians we have received as countries.
A new voting system isn’t enough to avoid this problem, what is needed is a cultural reevaluation of how we engage with our government and what shape it should take because if even Democracy isn’t going to provide us with good governance what is even the point of it in its current form?

James O'Brien nailed it when he said real courage is Leadbeater standing up to the terrorists that murdered your sister.
This was a highly unusual situation and trying to project this result to the wider context is extremely risky.
The opinion polls here and for the Liberal Democrat victory a few weeks ago show a 6-7% discrepancy compared to the result. That suggests that the 'shy voters' now seem to be progressives.
Galloway played an disproportionate role here compared to the more normal situation, taking a most of his votes from Labour. The Tories also manage to cannibalise much of the far right and Independent conservatives compared to previous elections. Neither is very likely to happen in a general election.

Another factor not mentioned was that in 2019, the Tory landslide was in part a Brexit issue. Brexit is gradually fading into history, so if the Tories want to hold on to the gains of 2019 they will have to find some relevance elsewhere.
It should also be remembered that the UK is a parliamentary democracy rather than a presidential democracy. Parties can lose even as their leader is popular, and parties can win even as their leaders are unpopular.

Not every one expected this to be a Tory win. Such data as there was placed the outcome well within the margin of error and the overall majority of the result clearly reflects this. What is clear though is that the overall swing away from Labour presented here is on trend with a national pattern which has been evident for nearly 10 years now and makes for grim reading long term for the Labour party. They are on the horns of an invidious dilemma. If they go further left, they'll lose even more overall support. If they shift right, they'll have a furious infight that could easily split them in two.

@markyes Labour cannot occupy the middle anymore, Blair did that very effectively, but cost some of the soul of the party and the Tories adapted quickly.
Then Brown showed how power hungry, greedy and corrupt many of those politicians were/are.
The manifesto in 2017 was very popular, they actually made gains in many places, but the issue was messed up by Brexit.
This needs to be put behind them, supporting Brexit and returning those policies.
They need a new Leader, who isn't a Sir and hasn't spent most of his life brushing shoulders with some of the richest people in the UK, and bring the party back to the left.
Of course there will be a huge amount of in fighting preventing this as a huge number of MP's are just Tory-lite now.
I'm not sure how to fight that as Corbyn tried and failed.
In addition to this they need to concede Scotland and make a pact with the SNP.
Honestly the party is so fucked at this point its very hard to rescue. Its just clear the party didn't want to change to Corbyn style politics that were engaging younger voters, and voters don't want the empty words of Starmer and the rest of the Labour cronies.

A type of person who's political advocacy involves, at least aesthetically, a focus on workers rights and socialist policy while disregard or being outright adversarial towards social causes and diversity. Essentially it's Naziism before they killed all the socialist in the party. They can be characterized as fascists in red. Something to be careful of going forward is the argument that in order to achieve workers rights ect. you must abandon both multiculturalism and diversity. They might side with some groups that are less progressive for their support before also casting them aside. This type of advocacy also aims for more authoritarian government - which isn't socialist at all. Workers rights aren't even a given in the long run - look to fascist states as examples. It's a complex and seemingly contradictory position, but nothing new.

A victory against all the odds for a great candidate who is very active and respected in her community. If Labour can find candidates deeply rooted and genuinely respected in their communities and not just parachute people into constituencies this might help them in future, but let's face it, if Labour survive as a political party it will take at least a decade or two for them to recover as a political force capable of gaining power.

So I feel like Batley & Spen is historically a Tory-leaning area, but has been Labour recently as the Pakistani community has grown in size. Therefore, for Labour to win even when a spoiler candidate is taking most of the Pakistani votes away is fairly impressive, IMO.

The Tories put in almost zero campaigning / canvassing effort on the ground. Their strategy was basically to hide while Labour and Galloway battled each other, and slip through the middle. Many eligible voters in the constituency probably didn’t even know the name of the Tory candidate.
It’s scary to think that despite all of that they still very nearly won.

    • @alexpotts6520
      @alexpotts6520 3 роки тому +1

Lest we forget, the Tories were pretty disengaged in the 2019 election, too. Their manifesto was extremely thin, they answered every question with "get Brexit done", and they ran away from TV interviews and other forms of scrutiny.
It is bad for democracy when saying nothing is such a potent electoral strategy. How can you hold people accountable for their promises when they don't even promise anything to begin with?

    • @Gizo02

@@alexpotts6520 I completely agree. To me that’s another reason why I think it’s utterly ridiculous for anyone that isn’t a diehard Tory supporter / member to support retaining FPTP at general elections, and oppose a proportional voting system.
There are many reasons why FPTP is a terrible system and is unfit for purpose in the 21st century. From Labour’s perspective under the current system they only get into power when sufficient people grow tired of the Tories and want a change. In the 90s the public were thoroughly fed up of the Tories who were basically finished after the March 1993 budget when they put VAT on fuel. So the Tories control the timetable. Plus PR would allow the different factions of the party to split without fear of electoral suicide and also end the daily and tiresome in-fighting: Rebecca Long-Bailey and Rachel Reeves for example being in the same party as each other is farcical.
