The composition of the orchestral parts is by their guitarist Christos Antoniou. He has studied composition at the London College of Music and Royal Northern College of Music according to his website and has a masters degree in concert music. So he has plenty of experience composing orchestral music, which is probably why he knows how to blend the orchestra so well with guitars and why he clearly did his best to not overpower the instruments of the orchestra.
They've had the prague philharmonic orchestra with them on every album since 2007, with their guitarist doing the classical composition. It's amazing. This song in particular is definitely the best of the album, otherwise the album is also good, but their previous, codex omega, was a tad better as a whole in my opinion. Still an amazing album though!
Fun little fact, Septic Flesh started as a performance art project of the lead singer Seth Anton Spiros and Christos Antoniou who does all the compositions. Their music has gotten more bombastic over the years, honestly there's very few bands like these guys. Also Seth does all the artwork and designs for the band. Some other really good songs to check out: "Lovecraft's Death", "Persepolis", "Portrait of a Headless Man", "Pyramid God", "Prometheus" "ICe Castle"(off their first album)
You're the best, Geebz! This video was shared on Septicflesh's social media btw. Coming Storm is definably one of the strongest songs on the album. But once you listen to all of it, each addition makes sense.
The diference between these guys and the rest of bands with orchestral parts is that other people do metal and then fill up with orchestra, these guys do it the other way for the most. They even released one version of their album that was just the orchestra part and you literally didnt notice the rest of the instruments were absent, it simply worked just like that.
Yay! I am so glad you did this! When you stopped before the transition I was like "he has no idea what's coming, he's gonna be blown away" 🤣 Again, so glad you did some more of their stuff. It's a more accurate reflection of their music. Christos is one of the guitarists who is also a composer. I love how SF always uses actual orchestras and choirs for their music as opposed to just samples and keyboards. Their music is very "grand" to say the least.
As soon as I saw Septicflesh in the title, I immediately clicked on your video. This is probably my favorite album by them. I haven't listened to them much in years,, but now I'm inspired to give this album another go tonight. I want to make art while listening to this. Thank you Geebz for bringing this band back on to my radar!
Professional LegendaryArtists..!!!. From The First Albums... So Atmospheric death metal music And The Lives Concerts are Unique Always....Live= The mirror of a band for me....!!!!. Hail From Greece
Big difference between underrated and unknown. Those who know said scene rate it highly a lot more often than not, it's been like that since the 90s, so no, not underrated at all.
Nothing not usual. Anything that comes from Greece is underrated even if many ppl tend to want to say or believe that it is the other way around. (If you like good rock with some post punk alternative feeling check an older Greek band named Trypes (you will wonder why this guys are not more known worldwide. Ofcaurse they sing in Greek - or they are from Greece and not England or USA - and this is one of the reasons. They are better from legendary and great bands worldwide known like The Clash. This is just an example).
So cool with the orchestration! Along with the vocals. The Violin was astounding.... Took me there!. I loved everything about this musical masterpiece.! ❤️
Septicflesh have an absolutely epic live album from Mexico with a full orchestra and choir. You can't go wrong with a single song. Christos Antoniou is the composer and guitarist. You should definitely check out more of their discography.
I am from Russia and enjoying your videos very much. Especially when you "decompose" prog or extreme metal bands' music. So nice I came across your chanel. Please keep it up!
Fully agree with you on this one Geebz. Orchestra + metal is always conceptually a match but in practice nearly always falls short in terms of integration. This was just about a perfect example of how it can actually work. Great share and take. I'm totally checking them out now
They've been collaborating with the Filmharmonic Orchestra of Prague since their 2008 album "Communion". As said in the comments, their guitarist Christos does all the orchestrations and composing. Also his brother, vocalist/bassist Spiros is an artist, who has done many album covers for bands like Kamelot, Paradise Lost, Moonspell, The Foreshadowing, Exodus etc etc plus of course SepticFlesh
Man! It's great to see Septicflesh get some love. If you loved this, you should really check out their live performances. Infernus sinfonica MMXIX. The whole set is absolutely brilliant. I loved "Portrait of a headless man" for it's strings and also "Our church below the sea" for that brass section and chutulu vibe. Otherwise, Dimmu borgir also made some nice orchestral arrangements. I really like "Dimmu borgir - Gateways" live (Forces of the northern nights).
You have to do more SpeticFlesh. A good candidate for a slow burn, maybe. These guys are great. Beethoven in mushrooms is a magnificent description. Their most iconic track, Anubis, has spread all over their discography with a certain riff of guitar that appears in later albums, kind of a easter egg thing. Still here! Awwright!
Loved hearing your perspective on this track. If you ever get around to another septic flesh track you ought to consider “lovecraft’s death”. Cheers and thanks for the video!
@@sarahcathousecritters There's more metal bands and varieties of metal bands than I could ever hope to keep up with, just have to stumble into them sometimes lol
It's the brass in this that gets me every time And Christos does video game scores And and you are getting old ... Your previous sf video was live with orchestra..... 😂
great video! i'm a big fan of Septicflesh! they also released instrumentals of some songs like "portrait of an endless man" if you want to better see the orchestration.
I hope you are aware of a band from Egypt called Odious. Their album Skin age is on YT. All the orchestra was arrenged by Christon Antoniou and bass and guitar was played by Fotis Benardo, ex Septicflesh drummer. Very worthy!
sorry, im not on patreon, but you should really check out haggard - of a might divine. theyre simply next level when it comes to combining symphonics with metal. theyre basically a small orchestra, with classical musicians as full time members of the band. one of the only bands that they symphonics can stand on their own - and often do. they also play a different style, combining classical music and early music with death doom metal. itll also change the way you view combining metal and symphonics. whereas most are metal with added symphonics, haggard are almost more of an orchestra with added metal. very interesting and different, something you should defnitely check out!
I'll suggest Fleshgod Apocalypse again to go along with this. Listen to March Royale AND In Aeternum together! It's two tracks, but March Royale is an intro into In Aeternum!
I played violin for 15ish years, i dont think there is a technique where you flip the bow over and use the wood or fibreglass. Spicatto is when you bounce the bow (normal side). But i mean you could literally do whatever you want with a violin, you could drag a dead carp across the strings if you wanted to, so maybe that's what they are doing there.
Geebz...I've been trying for a year and a half to get you to listen to Psycroptic - Cold It will blow your mind. Possibly the greatest guitar riff ever, Spanish flamenco guitar Groove Killer vocal phrasing Dude please listen to this song. It is a life changing metal experience
@@chrisnielsen9885 to me it's the transition from the flamenco riff to the main riff, the sheer technicality of the riff but the fact that it still grooves, the way the riff changes throughout the song but still keeps the main underlying idea throughout. I've been playing guitar 30 plus years, written many a song and I just think it's a master class in how to incorporate brutality, technicality, rhythm, groove and melody in a song.
Yes, somehow they share many elements in common. FA are a bit more agressive and drummer plays faster if you know what I mean. On the other hand they use symphonic libraries (very good ones)rather than a real orchestra. I like very much the italian band.
Great reaction mate. I love these guys ❤ please do yourself a favour and check out Shadow of intent - Barron and breathless macrocosm Awesome heavy/symphonic group

Septicflesh is the best in the game with orchestral metal, and it's not even close.
Haven't heard any Septicflesh in years. They were still death-doom, it was that long ago. This is absolutely fantastic stuff.
They really kicked it up a notch from Communion and onwards. Still has my favorite tracks of them, but the later ones are amazing too.

Killer reaction as alwasy Geebz! Also Ne Obliviscaris just dropped a new single that is definitely worth your time!
