  • Don't be intimidated! Here I'll show you some of the basic operations of a digital multimeter and how they can be used. We'll talk about measuring voltage, measuring resistance, and measuring continuity. I'll show you how to set your meter to get these measurements and how they can be used to troubleshoot electrical problems in your home. Multimeters are a great tool to have around the house. You can test household electric wiring, light switches and light fixtures, telephone wiring, cable TV wiring, all kinds of batteries, electrical components in your car, your tractor or mower, and your appliances.

    Finally a tutorial on multimeters that I understand. SO many out there assume you know electrical terminology and symbols and get very confusing very fast. Your video is relevant for homeowners who just need to test common household things and understand the basics. Absolutely the best video I've seen and extremely helpful. Your closeups are perfect too.Thanks so much. I needed this.

    I was at home Depot trying to ask an associate how a multimeter worked to be able to use it at home. They gave me an very ambiguous answer and was dissatisfied. After listening to several others trying to explain the multimeter I have to conclude that yours was the best! Your using 3 different models and explaining them really helps. Thanks.

    Very Excellent "Beginners Guide" to using a multimeter around one's home. I picked up a brand new multimeter at a rummage sale, and none of my friends new how to use it, even an auto mechanic. Now, through this video, I'll be able to test batteries, measure voltage in home electrical circuits, etc. Thanks for this great introductory video. 8.3.2017

      Just be careful to get the polarity right on your neck bolts. If you get it reversed your toes will curl every time you blink. You don't want to know what happens when you sneeze.

    Hey, great tutorial here! I didn't hear you mention this, but a topic you might cover for safety purposes is CAT rating for multimeters. Be mindful of the voltage and current limits of your meter as well as the size and type, and even the location, of the circuit you want to test. If there is no CAT rating printed somewhere on your meter it probably should be limited to CAT I circuits, which would be simple low voltage electronic circuits. CAT II, you can add household currents and voltages. CAT III is usually good for everything up to indoor commercial circuits 600V to 1000V, depending on the meter. And any outdoor circuits (which are inherently closer to the power source and thus more power potential) should only be tested with CAT IV meters.

    Bought my MMT few months ago n was intimidated by all its functions n the required reading of instruction manual. After viewing your video, it will DEFINITELY help in reading/understanding the manual n operating the meter. Your video explained in simple terms; some of its usefulness; n where to place most of the leads for testing. Saw some other videos that were too technical or confusing for this DIYer. Kudos to you n your video ! Looking forward to your next video.

    I’m echoing what so many people have said, by far the best video on using a multimeter. Some of them seem to overcomplicate what you made very simple indeed, and I now know for my purposes I need the two voltage readings and the continuous current. I doubt I will need the ohms though the information is useful for if I ever do need it. Einstein once said that a genius isn’t a man who understands a theory, but one that can explain it to the uninitiated.

I have lost hours looking for someone to teach me how to use this and the + and --- you made my DAY!! Question: Does the red wire + go into the bigger hole of an outlet or does it go into the smaller hole?

    • @enduringcharm
      @enduringcharm  5 років тому +1

      It makes no difference. With AC (alternating current) there is no positive or negative, so you'll get the same reading either way.

      @@enduringcharm O.K. got it, Thank You for your quick response. There are times when I plug in my p.c. into an outlet and the charger gets very hot I mean really hot, am I doing something wrong?

    • @enduringcharm
      @enduringcharm  5 років тому +1

      Well, chargers for phones, laptops, etc., are just transformers which convert 120V AC electric into some form of DC electricity, typically. Some heat is normally associated with that process. However, if the transformer is getting scary-hot, then it may be time to replace it. You can buy generic chargers on the interweb. You'll need to know the plug style for the device side, and the specs from the side of the existing charger which should tell you voltage and amperage. It will say something like, Output: 12VDC 1000mA, except the numbers may be different.

    Thank you so much. You explained it very well. I was taught how more diagnostic it is to use resistance to test continuity as compared to using the buzzer function because a higher than expected reading may indicate a deteriorating condition of the contact which may be caused by built up of oxidation which increases resistance. So a reading is good. It tells you something which deserve a further investigation. On the other hand, a buzzling sound only tells you a continuity - good or bad, it does not indicate.

    • @enduringcharm
      @enduringcharm  3 роки тому +1

      Quite true, setting on the ohmmeter you get a value as well as testing continuity. On the other hand, there are times when you just need a yes/no answer if something is connected at all or not. There are times when you can't easily glance at the readout and having a beep or buzzer can make it easier to get your answer. Both meter settings have their place.

    Great vid. I have the yellow 1. When switching the dail to settings it always reads OL overranged i think... Why?? I know nothing about this thing. Your vid is very very helpful btw... Also how do you use the wireless reading?

    • @enduringcharm
      @enduringcharm  5 років тому +1

      The OL is just an open circuit, and the infinite reading is more than the meter can measure (obviously). You'll get this when set to Ohms and you don't have the leads connected. The "wireless" reading you mention is actually just an inductive pickup which alerts you to live electric in a wall or wherever. It's sometimes useful, but don't rely on it for safety!
