They're actually all cardboard though. What he's calling cardboard in the video is actually corrugated fiberboard. Everything from cardstock to fiberboard is a type of cardboard.

amazing, i think the reason the microphone didn't always detect the claps was for the reasons you talked about, when you plug in a clapper to a clapper, the had you tried to clap above the first clapper it most likely wouldn't work due to the fact the way for the clapper to hear it was blocked, but if you did below it would hear it

I'm still using an old The Clapper (distributed by JML - John Mills Ltd0 here in the UK.
I would not have expected the supplementary units to work in the first instance as only the primary one would be receiving current.
The UK version has four LEDs - three red rectangular LEDs, above a singular round amber LED. The red ones indicate detected sound whereas the amber light illuminates when a load is attached. Curiously, the amber LED illuminates when the plugged-in device is turned OFF but the LED goes off when the plugged-in device is ON. This is counter-intuitive.
There is a switch on the side with three positions:
    ~ Home (HI)
    ~ Home (LOW)
    ~ Away.
The 'Away' function turns on the plugged in device when it hears any noise, but I don't know if this is then permanently on or if it has an internal electronic timer. I can no longer find instructions for this device but I am amazed that it still works after so many years.

I think that the issue it that the bottom mics are covered. Have you tried plugging the second one upside down the keep the mic open? If that works plug the third one the correct way and the bob ross one upside down that way all of the mics have as much open space as possible

You can't as the Clapper's plug is polarized. It only plugs in one way.

“I dunno why anyone would ever wanna do this”, yeah me neither, since using one turns off the functionality of the other, and is useless for automation :P of course the power passing would work! If you’d managed to find a way to actually get them to not nullify each other, that would have been impressive.
Thoroughly enjoyed the tapping on the bottom one conducting up the chain at the end. What a simple and ingenious use of the very basic microcontrollers that were available back then, though. Just a mic and watching for spikes, with a certain cadence.

The microphone for the clapper is on the lower left corner, which is covered when plugging in more clapper units. I think the randomness you got from this experiment has to do with the microphones being blocked.

The flared tip on the neutral prong of the plug seems like it should be nostalgic. I don't remember seeing that for some time. Mostly just wide tips or completely wide prongs. The hot side is also tapered.

Given US electrical regulations you can still plug them in upside down if they aren't grounded. Even though it's needed for some applications, you aren't allowed to label one of the live wires differently. It's just two lives and one ground.

A random thought: a "Clapper" should turn off whenever a capacitor blows up, pretty handy... Also replace those with just double sockets, stack some more up and it would be a practical guide to household fires :)

The flimsier material is coated paperboard. In the US the number one manufacturer of it is GPK Intl, I believe. It’s used in a lot of places that you don’t think about like those rectangular Cola 12 packs. Interestingly, when it leaves the manufacturing facility it’s covered in a slick coat of white semi gloss plastic sort of like a blank canvas, and then whatever company buys it gets to paint it.
