Today's video is a bit off-the-cuff, but hopefully you'll find it interesting. I recently did an episode on The Clapper, an early form of home automation. I got the idea of plugging one Clapper into another Clapper and seeing if it could still control a lamp. So let's find out!

OK but can you record yourself clapping and use that to control a Clapper?

sex counter. The amount of claps to turn on the light is the record, every time you add another clapper when you beat the record of most claps.
You weren’t kidding when you said questions nobody asked
Yes so true.

CLAP OFF! *clap clap*
Well now it’s
CLAP ON! Clap clap clap
CLAP OFF! Clap clap clap
I feel like I might be forgetting something... Aw well.
Clap on! Clap clap
Clap off! Clap clap
Clap on, clap off, The Clapper!
Question: Am I the only one who distinctly remembers the "Clap off" claps being faster than the "Clap on" claps at the end of the commercial?
@@shanesanchez2827 I don't know. It's been literal years since I've seen that commercial, any of them actually.
When your parents have a clapper in their room and you can see the light switching on and off in the middle of the night
Maybe they are watching a show and are clapping along to the show

note, the thin cardboard is usually used during very busy seasons in factories as it is just cheaper.
In the UK it's called card
Lol
Fun fact, the two packaging materials are paperboard and cardboard (corrugated cardboard to be specific)
@@DOORZ2012 isn't paperboard the same shit most pc software boxes were made out of in the 90s? I'm surprised he didn't pick up on that.
@@michealpersicko9531 hell, maybe? I was born in 95 so I'm more of a 2000s kid. Most I remember was getting discs in plastic CD cases or paper envelopes in the mail (for I think Netscape?) We always kept discs in binders or cd soft cases (the kind with like 50-200 capacity type of size) so I don't have a clue what kind of packaging they came in
When you said “flimsy cardboard material” I thought about cardstock
That's what it is
@@toddbod94 Actually, I believe it's folding boxboard, boxboard/paperboard is used for packaging quite often, cardstock is generally used for things like business cards and booklet covers. Boxboard is a bit thicker than cardstock.
They're actually all cardboard though. What he's calling cardboard in the video is actually corrugated fiberboard. Everything from cardstock to fiberboard is a type of cardboard.
1:45 When I saw your first video, I went and bought every clapper nearby. Sorry. My bad. 🤦♂️😿
Why? Did you already know clap-ception was coming?

In theory there is an infinite number of shades for every color
@@dietjesus7710 In practice, experiencing any sufficiently subtle shade of a color would require too many photons for you to experience it and live to tell the tale...but we do experience a small number of trillions of photons per second hitting our eyes from an area about the size of a single letter on a computer screen, so I guess the number of colors we can experience at a pixel size, without blinding ourselves, should be roughly in the billions.

Welcome to my favorite series on this channel, "Series I Never Knew Existed", ep. 2
You clapping is the 1980's equivalent of saying "Alexa", or "Ok Google"
or "hey siri"
@@Peppmintleaf not really, siri now knows your voice
Google has voice recognition as well
The clapper may be of past times but it's easier than saying siri bla bla bla or alexa bla bla bla
Except you have to plug four into each other to get roughly the same level of reliability as a smart speaker lol
"You may be wondering what a clapper is..."
Bloody hell, I went and got old, didn't I.
My parents bought a clapper and I think they like testing it out at night with their door shut.
This can be summarized into a question like: “You want to see an electrical fire?”
I love when UA-cam answers questions I asked when I was 8
"what happens when you use 100% of your brain power"
LSD trip is probably the closest one can get without brain damage, I think.
Small deficit of inhibition of brain activity causes ADHD.
Going higher causes delusions and hallucinations among many other problems.
100% brain excitation is coma and most probably death rather quickly.
There's a good reason why the exact amount of brain is excited at any time.
I know you're joking, maybe I should start to use LESS of my brain at once.
Until somebody claps
This video is the embodiment of things I do when I'm having a depressive episode but I'm bored
This is the type of quality content UA-cam was made for
I do believe that flimsy cardboard is known to the masses as cereal box cardboard
It's chipboard or cardstock. I used to make boxes for a living.
Sounds like a fun job
Alternate title: "Man complains about thin cardboard for 12 minutes"
he didint complain about it in the whole video.
amazing, i think the reason the microphone didn't always detect the claps was for the reasons you talked about, when you plug in a clapper to a clapper, the had you tried to clap above the first clapper it most likely wouldn't work due to the fact the way for the clapper to hear it was blocked, but if you did below it would hear it
What do you call four Clappers in a circle?
A round of applause!
Next use small extension cords/splitters so you can see individual clapper lights
I think Michael needs a vacation. He's losing his mind. lol
Probably so haha
We all need a vacation ngl
Next: A clapper plugged into a cord plugged into a clapper...
Who needs epic rap battles when you can have Vader vs. Bob Ross in a...
clap-on, clap-off!
That's not a monstrocity... It's a happy little accident! :D
"there are no accidents" -Master Oogway
(Edit wow! I got it right!)
I like how Michael is so much more comfortable on camera these days
Forget the clapper, the commentary on packaging materials was far more entertaining.
imagine clapping at a birthday party or something then the lights start cha chaing real smooth
Quite awhile back, these "clapper" videos kept getting recommended to me and, on another account, they're still sitting in a playlist full of videos to _"definitely_ watch, but not right now".
This was long before initially discovering your channel for its Windows nostalgia, and finding out you made them makes me very happy indeed.
They're now sitting in the current playlist, actively being watched. 👍🍍
My dad used to slap his ass to use these things. Fond memories.
Just be grateful he didn't hit your ass. And by the look of your pfp he should have.
I never lived in a Clapper household, so I was wondering, if you have the TV audio turned up loud enough, does a show filmed before a live studio audience turn the Clapper on and off? Does the Clapper commercial?
"plugging a clapper into a clapper" really sounds quite funny to me lol.
Ah yes the Darth Vader Clapper, the most essential Christmas decoration
Lovin the more comedic intros and editing lately. Also LOL about the "CHAPTER ELEVEN" on the intro. Going bankrupt from buying too many clappers? haha
Also the Amoeba Sisters theme during the 30 min. later parts.
I feel like this is the sort of video that will appear in the recommendations of someone in a few years time after someone searches for a clapper video
Her: "I wonder what hes watching in there"
Him:
11:23
"And when I tap three times..." apparently it plays an ad. Lmao
2:46 | Welcome to Michael MJD, this is no unboxing channel. No no no, this is a box channel. Where we talk about different packaging of the same product and critique it all!
Lol
Can you do a video where you test out the program called “Winslap” it is a really cool windows 10 optimisation and tweaking tool, not sure if it is better than Winaero Tweaker though…
I will rest easy tonight after years of wondering this age-old question. Thank you so much for setting me free!
My life is complete now. I can finally die in piece. Thanks Michael.
sparks fly, its like electricity, i might die
Yes the sequel I have been waiting for 👍😀
Love the quick 30 minutes later transition
It's actually the Amoeba Sisters theme lol.
Man, your content lately has been awesome! Love your channel!
Why are my parents lights going on and off so much
This is the kind of content I'll watch all the way through even though I have way better things to do 😂
The weaker paperboard is used for clappers that will be sent bulk. So for example 20clappers in a bigger box and then stright onto shop shelves as its cheaper and lighter to post many of them. The heaver duty cardboard can be sent through the post individually and be protected indervidually.
this reminds me of old reviews where they are not on a script, I love that it feels natural
I was just watching one of Michael's videos before he uploaded this
Hm yes i have actually thought about this Before when i was Younger Now i will Finally Know XD
The vids are getting so much better, great vid
I love how professional this video about nonsense is.
Fyi you are building a computer on the lowest level. Just a ton of switches.
Or a really bad shift register
6:01 What a waste of packaging for such a small item.
This series should be called "questions you're surprised you haven't thought to ask"
Seems like a nice way to turn your bedroom into a disco.
MAybe you were looking for "card stock" for the material name?
And another question, why not alternate the orientation of every second one, like make every second one be upside down?
Because of how American outlets are set up, the negative terminal being bigger than the positive one, you can’t flip them. I would love to see that tho, lol
Omg wait what if you Did this with a Clap Television Set? Would it Not work lol ? bc when you clap for the Clappers you have to clap x Amount of times for an Electronic in a Different Plug But if the TV is also Clap activated wouldn't it just Turn off the Tv?
So this is how lamps turn on, with thunderous applause.
"Bob Ross clapper" is not a term I thought I would hear today
now what happens if i plug in my pc with a 750w power supply at the end
Fire hazard, plus it might damage your computer if you effectively unplug your computer all the time
*plugs pc with i7 and 2080 ti*
It would be better when you flicked a switch it played a clap noise to turn on your lights
even the thumbnail preview feels like an infinite loop of unboxing clapper, well played
You plugged in the clapper to the clapper and the ad hit. I thought I died.
Yes, I never asked this.
Now I want to do that.
Me: watches a guy doing a trick
Also me: hah thats cool i gotta clap as respect
Clapper: *FRIKIN CLOSING UR TV*
I've got a fever and the only prescription is more clapper
Since they run on AC, I'm pretty sure you could just plug the second unit upside down so that both units have lights visible.
See what happens when you plug in something that's way above 200w.
“I dunno why anyone would ever wanna do this”, yeah me neither, since using one turns off the functionality of the other, and is useless for automation :P of course the power passing would work! If you’d managed to find a way to actually get them to not nullify each other, that would have been impressive.
Thoroughly enjoyed the tapping on the bottom one conducting up the chain at the end. What a simple and ingenious use of the very basic microcontrollers that were available back then, though. Just a mic and watching for spikes, with a certain cadence.
thats the type of content why i love this channel so much :D
MJD Explaining that something is not a toy makes me really want to play with it
Just do a damn face reveal. It’ll make your production so much easier.
Stfu
My smoke alarm is wired into a clapper
10:06 I love how gently you tapped it but it still detected it as a clap.
Was about to ask what a clapper is. Thank you for explaining!
I really didn’t know I needed this content, thanks
I love how you reviewed the packaging.
imagine powering the lights in a theater with this
Imagine you're watching a concert on TV. The audience applauds and the Clapper starts flashing the lights and sends messages out in semaphore or Morse code.
*”He has ascended to a point beyond our understanding”*
It's not myself who asks this question but my curiosity on the internet ends up doing it for me.
i cant believe you managed to stretch out clapping at a box for 12 entire minutes.
"This is so... stupid! but it actually works."
That summarizes the best content on youtube 🥂
cant believe I never thought to do this back when it came out. In the 80's my Grandma had them.
