I love the support you’re giving to framework laptops! I love the concept and they executed very well, all laptops should give the consumer and option to upgrade the parts they need and make the repair process incredibly easy, I also feel like the framework laptop should have 3 configs at purchase:A budget 600-800 dollar config, a mid range 850-1200 Dollar config, and a premium 1300-2000 dollar config.
Great interview! I like this kind of supplementary content to the normal review content to give a platform to industry players who are innovating in interesting ways, it fits well with the rest of the channel imo.
Great interview with great questions. As someone for whom the fight against planned obsolesce has become a lifestyle (I have many devices and keep them for decades, not years), I am very interested in this concept, but I am also allergic to any kind of fan noise and have been buying only silent devices recently. Hope they can improve the design so that fan noise become almost an non existent problem.
Great interview, thank you 😊. I also wondered about the connective tissue between the idea of making the framework notebook to it's execution. My IBM ThinkPad from 2005 was modular as well. For the uninitiated, Josh's comment "before the invention of the car, people were asked what do you want in a car? Most people responded with the answer "faster horses". These answers come from a survey conducted in the 1890s.
If he is able to have a numpad for the laptop, maybe i could give a go. My job requires me to push numbers most of the time and having a numpad really saves time. However numpads usually exist at 15 inch and higher laptop and desktop computers and while getting a separate numpad component can be a hassle at times as well. So looking forward for them to cater to these type of users as well.
Yeah, great interview, and great "find" of a one-of-a-kind company and laptop that puts control of its configuration in the hands of the consumer. After all, many electroinics consumers are geeks that love tweeking their equipment to their preferences, and until FRAMEWORK, the "micro-components" in laptops have restricted tweeking of computer systems to the desktop.
Yeah but what about the financials? Something everyone overlooks on startups. Not just from an investor point of view, but also a consumer. Sure its upgradeable, but what if it goes out of business, where will i get my 'upgradeable' parts from. This makes me very reluctant to even consider it as an option right now.
Great interview!! The big missing question that was not asked, is what made the other modular systems fail. It is the support. Obviously they have built some protocols to facilitate modularity. However these protocols wilp go out of date after some time, how long are they gonna support the current protocols. It is not an easy task to support out of date hardware, that you no longer produce, specially for a very small, brand new company wity no record. Just for clarification, if I want to replace the screen in 2 years with a better one. Will they still support the current connection, wiring, aspect ratio, etc..
Great question! My guess/hope would be that they were aware of this issue and that very high on the priority list was to find a good chassis and set of interfaces and fix it in place for years to come. They can now update the laptop components independently every year. An AMD CPU and motherboard next year and maybe a 4k screen after that? It is so obvious, they must have thought of those possibilities and planned for them. If something breaks, you don't need the exact original part, if the updated part fits as well. Sure, they can't use the same interfaces forever, so the will have to update them at some point. But for example: I have my laptop for 7 years now. I like it, but the CPU (14nm dualcore) is showing its age. Let's say that was a framework laptop and they stopped using this specific chassis and and connector-set last year. I would happily buy last years CPU and use the laptop for 7 years again. That is already a lot better than other manufacturers. But also, in all those years where they supported the first model they created a market for new modules and replacement components. I can get my exact laptop model fairly cheap on the used market if I need replacement parts, despite this model being only sold for a year or less. For every year in that they don't break compatibility, they also add a second year of life even after they stop supporting the device, because they created a healthy used market for it. But it is not only the used market. Look at the automotive industry. My dad owns a car that is almost 30years old. The manufacturer doesn't care anymore but other small companies bought the tooling and still produce replacement parts to this day. Sure, they are a little bit more expensive because they can't scale to the same high numbers, but as long as there is demand for it they will continue to fill this market niche. I guess the number of compatible devices needs to be above a certain threshold for this to work. But a couple generations of intercompatible laptops should do. I believe this is their plan. Or at least this is how I make sense of it. I hope they can solve these problems so that it will be possible get replacement screens for the next 15 or 20+ years.
@@SciFiFactory i hope that your assumptions are correct and they have a plan for all this. Better to creat a workstation laptop or gaming laptop with powerfull GPU and CPU. The GPU must be upgradable. Without changing the motherboard. @@JustJoshTech It is very interesting, and I'm honestly curious regarding the business side of it! So many have failed to achieve what Framework is doing correctly; being modular and practical.
No specific questions for gaming products or modulations? He couldn't share much at all about the roadmap... So maybe you assumed it would be a wasted question? Only reason I haven't pulled the trigger on this laptop is because it doesn't have a dedicated graphics card.
Replaceble/upgradeable laptops will never work with the way the computing industry is heading. To get the best performance, you need more and more silicon integrated into the SoC to get the latency, and power consumption under control. It’s simple physics people. What are you gonna do? Replace the SoC? 😂 This project is DOA … Funny how techies are supposed to be the most progressive and open minded folks but when it comes to PCs … they can’t seem to get way from motherboards, upgradable cpu, Ram, gpu, ports …. Concepts from the 1970s … over 50yrs ago. Sad
