- In our latest 11 Questions & A Cup of Coffee segment, we caught up with former NFL lineman turned expert woodworker John Malecki.
The world of professional sports isn’t all glitz and glamour. Sometimes you get stuck bouncing around teams for a few years, never totally making a name for yourself. Sometimes you’re left undrafted or end up cut from a team you gave your heart and soul to. That is the reality for many players - including John Malecki.
Malecki, a lineman, was left undrafted out of Pittsburgh in 2010 until he was signed by the Tennessee Titans. After that he bounced around the league, including a stint with his home team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, until officially leaving the NFL in 2014.
Since then, Maleki developed a passion for woodworking and started his own DIY woodworking UA-cam channel. He now builds full time for clients, posts videos on his channel (he's a bonafide sensation at this point!), and covers topics like tool reviews, challenge builds, and at-home makeovers.
Coffee or Die caught up with Malecki last year when he delivered a custom-built table to Black Rifle Coffee Company headquarters in San Antonio, Texas. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

He is one of my favorite woodworkers to watch. Really good at what he does...Super entertaining and hilarious!
Hey BRCC guys, when you do interviews like this one, the background music is to loud or very distracting. Just my opinion
His woodworking videos are great. He doesn't take himself too seriously but he is very good at what he does.
I love that he's being interviewed at the table that he and his team made.
Turn the background music down pleaseeeee
This guy motivates me to do thing that aren't even in the workshop. he gives off a great "vibe"(for lack of better term) his videos just make me want to jump through a brick wall. love what he does and respect him for what he has accomplished.
John Malecki is an amazing woodworker and a fantastic person !!!! love seeing who he is !!!!!!!!!
Only just discovered John and his channel, and I am loving it
The music is drowning out what he's saying. If it wasn't for the captions, I wouldn't have a clue what he's talking about. Sort out your audio levels!
John,
Outstanding conversation and truth self motivated person.
"I'm quite wide..." Feel ya bro. 👊
Hit me right in the love handles
Very cool interview and such a humble person and yes, one of the best woodworkers out there!! I would love to make a wood project with you!!
Awesome interview! He is very skilled with his wood!
And John I believe is leaning on a table he built...pretty cool man..
great style and sense of humour!
John loves his coffee so much he's tapped it into his home 🤗
Great woodworker and entertainer. Reminds me of Vince Vaughn
The funny thing is - I think he'd be super approachable... seems like a really cool fun guy.
FACT: John Maleki does an interview about himself on a table he built himself.
Man that's just like being in combat arms in the Army. Mainly Infantry. When you get out, you have nothing to show for it. You have to start over.
I like these videos. - interesting, but did not like the cut ins of
Cowboy, nose, coffee grinder, etc - they took away from the goodness of
An honest interview and seemed forced and cutesy
I've watched a ton of Johns videos and dint know he was a former NFL player til this video. He's made a whole new name for himself and is a killer woodworker. also - Musics too loud in this edit. Really hard to hear him speak.
Love ya John.
John is the best. I'd hit him on the "tackle eligible" all day.
Go Steelers!
Solid piece
Great insight into an interesting man.
How freaking cool!
character matters. if a team does not take him, he will succeed.
Malecki - very beautiful Polish root surname. Grandparents from Poland ? Greetings :)
Pittsburgh has a pretty big Polish community
Wearing tshirt shorts & flipflops is the home uniform for a mechanic
The mystery silver pouch of coffee in the lunch room!
I bet that was a really interesting interview it’s a shame I couldn’t hear it because of the music
Dommage que pas de sous titre en français
I love watching him!!! Kinda was hoping that one of the questions would be on his view on politics. Just curious 🤔
He’s a blue collar guy. I’ll give you two guesses, but hope you would only need one.
Black Rifle Coffee AND John Malecki? Does it get any better?
Had no idea he came from the NFL...I thought this was an interview with two different people...
He played for the Steelers for a few years.
The man is a dude full stop!
I could see John as the Juggernaut.
Didn’t even know he was in the NFL
I know I should, but can’t help it... I have to have sugar and creamer in my coffee... I’ll have to keep trying to drink it black
It’s weird to see him calm
Audio is not great...
Money is the best super power.
What is success? I'm older than you, but I've evolved to believe that success is never a static goal, but instead, an ever moving target. When I was in my 20's I wanted a bank account full of money, a closet full of custom suits, and a new BMW in the garage. Now in my 50's, I drive an older truck and wear jeans everyday, and though no where close to rich, I have enough money to live the way I want to live. But what has never changed throughout my life in an unquenchable desire to learn. I have people ask me all the time "Is there anything you don't know something about or can't do?", I'm always confused by that comment because I look in the mirror every day and worry I won't live long enough to learn the myriad of things I don't know anything about. And never forget through all of it to give back anywhere you can. If you can lend a helping hand or pass on a tidbit of information, that might be the one thing that changes someone's life for the better.
John if it helps, I’ve been a failure my whole life ☕️
I'm sorry
Holy crap. John: you sound so good when you drop the Mat Best best routine and just be you. Funny is okay, but I feel like you're trying to copy Mat's "funny" in your woodworking vids. This is the best I've ever heard you and I've watched several of your vids. You are very talented. You be you. Let Mat be Mat. You don't need to do that. Best of luck to you and your fiancé.
He seems so jittery
Your wrong! Batman's super powers is... He's Rich (Bitch).
Marty, get back on the boat, put on your damn clothes, and edit the sound better!! (I'm just summarizing what I read in the comments)
Sooo American 😂😂 but nice part of america
Hardly an "expert" .... you need experience to call someone an expert... not just a youtube channel
Expert? Not even!
"expert"?.... Is that why you have someone else do all the work? This tool is the most obnoxious UA-camr in the woodworking category. He's like if 16 year old hype beast made a woodworking channel.
Agreed.
@@P010010010100101 agreed. and he put special forces and nfl in the same sentence, christ the night. He's a fool and delusional one at that. Loves to put out a vibe of being big john malecki, but hes a douche bro and his projects are basic as shit. "expert"... thankfully doctors and those in serious jobs need more qualifications than a half baked youtube channel to be considered "experts". Frankly, the 'maker' community has disappeared up its on rear end. Used to be a huge diresta fan and admired his independence but he's gone full shill and takes every deal going. nothing wrong with that, but he made such a song and dance about not being paid for stuff and painting tools white, got other people doing that crap too, and now its take whatever he can get. same as that d*ckhead wilkerson and laura kampf. Gone full circle jerk and f*cked itself. it's now all about those sweet sponsorships, mega shops and huge machinery costing thousands at a time.
You want an expert woodworker, watch paul sellers or matthias wandel or rob cosman or john peters etc etc.
