The NFL has one of the most strict salary cap in pro sports so there's only so much of the pie to go around. The Superstars get the lion's share. I don't know if this is mentioned, but there's the 1978 rule changes; besides the Mel Blount Rule (defenders can't make contact with WRs five yards past the line of scrimmage), offensive linemen can now extend their arms and use their hands in pass blocking situations.
1:59 My guess is all men 6’5+ and over 300 lbs are at greater risks for these conditions. Not just NFL linemen. False conclusion? At least now they’ll be rich and unhealthy.
Oh Europeans, We get it... "It should be hand-egg," "dumbest sport," "Americans so fat," "switch to the metric system"... Do you only focus on our negatives? Smh...
Despite all the exotic passing offenses in football (i.e. spread, West Coast, etc.), in general, it still comes down to *which team can physically dominate the line of scrimmage* will determine who wins so the arms race for bigger and stronger linemen will continue.
The substitution rules were supposedly changed in 1950s, but it wasn't until the 1990s that the dramatic increase in weight statistics happened. Are there other factors worth considering when it comes to linesmen weight gains?
Roll it back, bring bag substitution rules, it would make the game safer and you can get crazy defensive/offensive athletic freaks who won't die of heart disease.
But wouldn't these guys be big, even if they didnt play football? playing that position doesn't make them enourmous, they are enormous and so they play that position
They would be as tall, yes. But not nearly as heavy or strong. Your body adapts to the stress you put on it. If you place stress on your muscles for many years, they get stronger.
Offensive Lineman are legitimately the most underrated athlete in sports. They are on average the smartest position in football(they have to switch systems, check defensive fronts and dissect plays and fronts within 15 seconds or so every play). Think about this, a
On the other hand, I've got a 6'6", 320 pound, 16 year old kid who is dead in the long term if he isn't motivated to get off the couch and play some sport, any sport. so thank you football - for giving me these extra years with my child.
Well if you look up Human body weight on wikipedia you will find out that ALL OF THEM do. American males are the heaviest in the world and not by a small margin, and since they are not particularly tall it's clear where all this weight comes from (McDonald's).
sparkss4 That's kinda interesting that they're not the tallest but they are the heaviest. But don't other countries have McDonald's as well? And what about genetics? I'm pretty sure Samoa and tonga have bigger males.
MOOD FM : MF DOOM I've seen rugby they don't look as big as NFL linemen. Even the linemen in my highschool are huge. 15 years old 6'4" 270 lbs. His brother is supposed to be 7 feet tall. He's 13 years old 6'5" 280 lbs so he's going to be a linemen.
Those are just examples btw they aren't on varsity yet. I think we've got a 300 pounder or two on varsity but he's not that tall. Only a bit above 6 foot.
MOOD FM : MF DOOM The NFL gets a lot of viewers in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, Germany, the UK, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Argentina.
People are just bigger in general. We have an obesity problem in this country, but I don't think that the NFL is the cause. I think it's more of the obesity epidemic that is the cause of the NFL. Whether these guys played football or not, they would still likely be very big and have the same health risks. The NFL is not coming up to anyone that is over 6ft 5in and asking them to bulk up to 350lbs. They just see that people are already this size and they want these people to be a part of their team.
Football gets a bad rep from people who've never played it on a team. It's actually a really complicated sport. It's not just hitting and catching a ball, it's more. Actually try to take time and look at the science behind it.
PP Hyjynx o I know but I was talking about the reputation from it gets from outsiders. They say things like "Football players are dumb" and "Football kid just hitting each other" but most players are actually really smart and there's a lot of complications when it comes to the sport.
It is not just hitting it is very stategy sport just try memorized full playbook as qb you need now protection recivers routes , hole numbers and what oppisite defence is doing are they in zone, man to man , cover one cover four, trap where point blitz is coming.
Very easy to not get caught with steroids now a days. I'd average 100% of the players using steroids and if one didn't they wouldn't be competitive at all. Maybe some cornerbacks don't.
Blocking below the waist is still allowed in certain situations. You don’t see it as much, but it definitely happens around the line of scrimmage, especially as blockers try to get to the linebackers.
Most of these guys didn't get big to play on the line. They were already big so they were asked to play and excelled because of their combination of size and athleticism. If they didn't play, I'm guessing they would be bigger, more unhealthy, and have more medical problems.
The price of fame, and fortune really. That being said many guys don't manage to make it to the highest level, but again it is part of the grind. These guys know what they are getting themselves into, but you can make more in 4-5 years than most people will make in their lifetimes.
'murica.. home to the country taht first launched a rocket into outer space and country where some of the best innovators of the modern time period, bill gates and steve jobs. for example were born. also the Us has the second highest GDP in the world as well. i admit we have our flaws but... if i'm being honest i've seen quite a few obese people in Europe so...
Reggie White was a good example of how dangerous it is for big linemen after the NFL, he passed away due to sleep apnea as a result of his weight. God bless the Minister of Defense, we packer backers and NFL fans alike miss him dearly.
Weight is relative, though. You know what's also super unhealthy? Pro bodybuilders that drop down to 2% body fat the day before a major competition. Or people with no muscles that can't even lift a 20kg box because they sit on their ass all day. Not defending these guys, but weight itself isn't the cause of problems, it's fat, or the complete lack of fat
sepiw losyl so your saying that if your 6'2 and 250 of muscle your unhealthily? I've seen some players in HIGH SCHOOL that are like that, its incredibly healthy
The “blocking below the waist” rule did change the game a lot. However, I would argue that the “eligible receiver” rule is causing even more “specializing” in certain positions. Consequently, the game is becoming less creative because too many rules are causing the sport to change dramatically from what it once was. In all, referees are bing forced by football leagues, which often are forced by the law, to enforce rules that are being made up each year. Therefore, the game is constantly evolving into a different sport from what it once was. It will remain this way forever unless the laws encompassing the game quit changing each year.
this rule is "presumably advatagly for people with roportional to their own long legs and it kittling the the according this playrules "allowed attackarea and that rule is in how far sensefull?
You act like us lineman eat pizza everyday and we plan on getting big on purpose. Most of us have to be on specialized diets to maintain weight. And being 350+ isn't mandatory, most of those guys are just naturally that big overtime. Us lineman aren't pigs, so make a video elaborating your claim. Thank you.
just because our dicks aren't small enough to warrant using millimeters doesn't mean you have to get shitty lol but seriously any kind of conversion would require billions on billions of dollars and honestly at the moment we got enough problems to deal with
A Very Kind Guy we have to educate 300 some-odd million people, retool I don't even know how many factories, rework the construction industry (wall studs are located 16 inches on center and things of like that) seeing is how a tank cost 6mil I don't know how we're going to do all that for a tank and two thirds. that seems really low.
Has nothing to do with rules. It’s all based on improvements in training, and humans in general just getting bigger. This is at all levels of football not just professional. Improving your performance in all aspects is what all athletes try to do, this includes size and strength.
LOL @ blaming their size on the NFL. So I guess the lineman would be 120lbs if they weren't playing in the NFL. you know because genetics is meaningless.

I don't know if this is mentioned, but there's the 1978 rule changes; besides the Mel Blount Rule (defenders can't make contact with WRs five yards past the line of scrimmage), offensive linemen can now extend their arms and use their hands in pass blocking situations.
Really wish Vox put more effort into these videos. It feels like the scratch the surface of the topics with a feather and then end the video.
Duh? Almost all NFL Offensive linemen lose the weight when they retire from football...One example is Chris Snee
As expected, the comments section is Americans vs. Nonmoonlanders.
Ok boomer
Technically yes
We were on the moon and its weightless there. In space no one can here you blubbering
1:59 My guess is all men 6’5+ and over 300 lbs are at greater risks for these conditions. Not just NFL linemen. False conclusion?
At least now they’ll be rich and unhealthy.
I spent more of my time converting the weight and height to metric system than listening to the narration. Going to rewatch it now
it shouldn't be called football it should be called hand-egg
Jessica Hardy I concur
Jessica Hardy the ball is 1 foot long smh
egg chasing w/armour.
I'd expect you foreigners would come up with a better joke by now but nope "Handegg XDD"
Trump has just recently signed an executive order you see preventing such things, that's why.
Hey guys breaking news if your bigger you are at higher risk of heart disease vox exclusive
All this... and linemen still get no love😔
Oh Europeans, We get it... "It should be hand-egg," "dumbest sport," "Americans so fat," "switch to the metric system"... Do you only focus on our negatives? Smh...
Can't really blame em, less and less positives to focus on every year
what's really positive about America?
our guaranteed freedom of speech. seriously, Europe is supposed to be evolved but ideas aren't protected.
You are telling me i don't have freedom of speech in Norway, or for that matter Europe?
is it constitutionally protected? if not, then no.
Despite all the exotic passing offenses in football (i.e. spread, West Coast, etc.), in general, it still comes down to *which team can physically dominate the line of scrimmage* will determine who wins so the arms race for bigger and stronger linemen will continue.
Vox is one of my favourite channels, such interesting content.
The substitution rules were supposedly changed in 1950s, but it wasn't until the 1990s that the dramatic increase in weight statistics happened. Are there other factors worth considering when it comes to linesmen weight gains?
My grandpa played college football in the thirties, he was an o-lineman at 5 foot 8 lol
In what year?
@@randomuser975 in the thirties bruh read the comment
So he's like, a hundred years old?
Athletes are bigger, stronger and faster. Not only that but we know how to properly train these guys
Roll it back, bring bag substitution rules, it would make the game safer and you can get crazy defensive/offensive athletic freaks who won't die of heart disease.
Not a lot of information for why this change happened, but I appreciate the video.
Did vox just acknowledge that being fat I'm actually unhealthy? Good job, now tell that to fat women.
God needs to nerf the tank meta. Too OP.
lmao
But wouldn't these guys be big, even if they didnt play football? playing that position doesn't make them enourmous, they are enormous and so they play that position
Playing football is what gives them the muscle
They're usually already big because most NFL linemen are genetic freaks
The *average* male is 195lbs!? Man, Americans are huge.
sparkss4
That's pretty small I still don't know how countries have males under that weight
Well if you look up Human body weight on wikipedia you will find out that ALL OF THEM do. American males are the heaviest in the world and not by a small margin, and since they are not particularly tall it's clear where all this weight comes from (McDonald's).
sparkss4
That's kinda interesting that they're not the tallest but they are the heaviest. But don't other countries have McDonald's as well? And what about genetics? I'm pretty sure Samoa and tonga have bigger males.
average height is around 6ft tall
typical eurocuck, why are you all completely retarded?
Similar thing happened in rugby with props
MOOD FM : MF DOOM I've seen rugby they don't look as big as NFL linemen. Even the linemen in my highschool are huge. 15 years old 6'4" 270 lbs. His brother is supposed to be 7 feet tall. He's 13 years old 6'5" 280 lbs so he's going to be a linemen.
Those are just examples btw they aren't on varsity yet. I think we've got a 300 pounder or two on varsity but he's not that tall. Only a bit above 6 foot.
Yeah but rugby players are athletic and fit , not fat like some these american football players
Your mad because football is better.
Really interesting video. It all makes sense now. Thanks for the explanation and data.
Respect your lineman
I'm impressed that Vox didn't find some way to weasel in something about toxic masculinity or patriarchal oppression
Football gets a bad rep from people who've never played it on a team. It's actually a really complicated sport. It's not just hitting and catching a ball, it's more. Actually try to take time and look at the science behind it.
it's still needlessly dangerous, just compare the concussion severity and frequency to a similar sport in rugby
PP Hyjynx You could say the same about boxing or MMA. Tough sports cause injury. Stick to wrestle ball it’s safer.
Tell me how do you feel about European football?
pretty surprised there was no mention of steroids tbh
its illegal
Sgt.Fury they still use them
joe botsch Their isn't alot of cases of NFL players using steroids I hope you know that.
Are you serious? That's pretty surprising
Very easy to not get caught with steroids now a days. I'd average 100% of the players using steroids and if one didn't they wouldn't be competitive at all. Maybe some cornerbacks don't.
CTE too has probably gotten worse as their momentum into hits has increased with their size.
Blocking below the waist is still allowed in certain situations. You don’t see it as much, but it definitely happens around the line of scrimmage, especially as blockers try to get to the linebackers.
Only watched cause my boy Alan Branch is in the thumbnail
big guys are good at stopping other big guys and gig guys are unhealthy. GOT IT. Thanks vox.
NFL lineman can get heart disease from being “obese” but Lizzo is beautiful and healthy. Got it
It’s been exactly 2 years since this video was posted. :)
Very informative, well done 👏🏻
Most of these guys didn't get big to play on the line. They were already big so they were asked to play and excelled because of their combination of size and athleticism. If they didn't play, I'm guessing they would be bigger, more unhealthy, and have more medical problems.
I read this comment from 9 months ago and agreed with it...then realized I wrote it 🤣
so basically the 80's is when anabolic steroids were used lol
The Vegan Mojo the vegan lmao!
Didn't know steroids increased height
me jr height only increased slightly by like 3 inches unlike weight which increased by half fold
illuminati 3 inches still a good amount.
Nah hgh
I'm 14, 6"1, 236 pounds I'm on my way
David Heaser 300 lbs is about 135 kg
David Heaser what the heck I'm 13 5'11 and only 145😂
David Heaser Your fat bro
Thank you I am fat but I can bench 275 dead lift 225 run a 8.34 mile and a 5.1 sec 40 meter dash.
David Heaser my brother is 15 at 6'3
Maybe the NFL should institute a weight limit based on your height. That way players won't have to choose between health and performance.
The price of fame, and fortune really. That being said many guys don't manage to make it to the highest level, but again it is part of the grind. These guys know what they are getting themselves into, but you can make more in 4-5 years than most people will make in their lifetimes.
metric system would be nice, so the rest of the world would know what you're talking about
Merthalophor shut up
I have no problem converting metric to SAE units. Have you considered the possibility that you're simply a dumbass?
One of the sad truths about football. Still my favorite sport though
these guys would be big and heavy no matter what, they are just millionaires now
rtnoobify poor americans are more likely to be obese. your comment is kinda dumb.
really? look at pictures from nick Hardwick when he was in the NFL he was like 270-280 now he is down in the 180-190s and pure muscle
“Blocking” and “buying time for players to move the ball” are exactly the same thing.
Health problems in a big house and a Bentley are still health problems.
'murica, gaining weight since 1970.
'murica.. home to the country taht first launched a rocket into outer space and country where some of the best innovators of the modern time period, bill gates and steve jobs. for example were born. also the Us has the second highest GDP in the world as well. i admit we have our flaws but... if i'm being honest i've seen quite a few obese people in Europe so...
Safwat Khan Steve jobs was a Syrian immigrant and 60 percent of Silicon Valley is foreign born, LOL.
Joe Ski Steve jobs himself wasn't a Syrian immigrant. I sincerely hope you realize that he was born in America.
Bet any of those linemen could outrun you too
Joe Ski so they are American are they not Even if eh Wasnt born here he still use american stuff to make what we have today
Linemen are sumo wrestlers? If you don't know the role of a lineman don't make a video about them.
Reggie White was a good example of how dangerous it is for big linemen after the NFL, he passed away due to sleep apnea as a result of his weight. God bless the Minister of Defense, we packer backers and NFL fans alike miss him dearly.
This is a really good video. Thank you :)
I don't think it' matters how athletic you are, if you're that heavy, it's unhealthy
Think about what you just said...
sepiw losyl so your saying that if your 6'2 and 250 of muscle your unhealthily? I've seen some players in HIGH SCHOOL that are like that, its incredibly healthy
Muscle also weighs more than fat, so these men most likely weigh so much because of the immense amount of muscle they have from the training
Is Vox video political?
Yes -- Likely worthless
No -- Likely excellent
I could not care less already, then you brought statistics into it. I guess I was wrong.
They Don't Really bulk up they are naturally that big
Oh I'm crying for the millionaire s
You act like us lineman eat pizza everyday and we plan on getting big on purpose. Most of us have to be on specialized diets to maintain weight. And being 350+ isn't mandatory, most of those guys are just naturally that big overtime. Us lineman aren't pigs, so make a video elaborating your claim. Thank you.
i don't think you watched the video
Yea it seems like you watched the first minute and got all mad
Yo I'm an offensive and defensive lineman and I'm 5'9 190lbs
Aidan Peterson your probably on a shitty varsity high school team or a freshman.
Aidan Peterson ur small
Wanna hear a joke?
The imperial system!
Lazarus Ku why
just because our dicks aren't small enough to warrant using millimeters doesn't mean you have to get shitty lol
but seriously any kind of conversion would require billions on billions of dollars and honestly at the moment we got enough problems to deal with
Dae fbg I think it's only 10 million and we still aren't doing it.
Dae fbg That's what a saw, idk look it up I guess
Has nothing to do with rules. It’s all based on improvements in training, and humans in general just getting bigger. This is at all levels of football not just professional. Improving your performance in all aspects is what all athletes try to do, this includes size and strength.
Lineman are the best part of the Game
LOL @ blaming their size on the NFL. So I guess the lineman would be 120lbs if they weren't playing in the NFL. you know because genetics is meaningless.
The video says that the change in rules (specially limited sustitution)
