I was thinking about that Idra game too. From Serral, I remember a ZvZ (vs Dark??) where in the end they were skirmishing in the bottom of the map with just two or three drones and two roaches. It was a nailbiter!
trap vs patience at kespa cup was one of the craziest base trades I have ever seen. One dt destroying 1 base with another defending and the other player could only blink and warp prism micro to try and destroy the base before the dt killed all his units. absolutely insane
I often rewatch the game between Maru and Parting and the moment Maru nukes his whole army. Another moment I often replay is Stephano vs ForGG, when ForGG accidently blows four medivacs with his own widow mines. Stephano's smirk is a thing of beauty.
I always enjoy the match between Scarlett and DongRaeGu in which Scarlett played Protoss. The match was just perfect. Casted by Day9 and CatZ, the new nickname "the Queen of Psi-blades" was born there and in the end you can even see Harstem jumping in the crowd.
Maru vs Parting with the nuke is one of my favorites. Long 40 minute macro game, with mining out the whole map resulting in each player poking each other back and forth to gain control of the last base on the map, Maru employing the occasional nuke while Parting tries to make him take even a little bit of damage on his vikings with storms... and it ends when Maru accidentally nukes his own vikings instantly losing the game. Incredible.
Oh man I watched that Scarlett Bomber match live. It was beautiful all the way from the beggining. Constant battles, frenetic rithm, classic 4M vs ling muta bane. Also day9's casting was great. Good times.
About Solar vs Maru, the commentators are wrong about Solar: he had indeed seen the nuke, and tried three times to target the ghost, but the first two times, he withdrew his overseers too quickly, and the broodlings could not damage the cloaked ghost!
Great video! Those are indeed 5 top moments, however I would make it a Top 8 and include Idra halluc rage quit, Idra tapping out after the opponent killed his own CC, and Kiwikaki double mothership recall on Lost Temple(?). All legendary moments in SC2 history!
I was at the bomber/Scarlett game. Bomber was outside for pictures IMMEDIATELY after and I was the first one on line. Had a buddy at that tournament that had never seen pro starcraft before. Amazing experience.
It’s not an “Epic” match by any means, but the most spectacular strategy I’ve ever seen was when SoS built a nexus in the base of Bunny to make it appear that he was going to recall adepts, but it was actually to build one probe to hide in the side of the base and build a proxy pylon to warp in DT’s. It was such a ridiculous strategy I couldn’t believe it.
One moment I will always remember was a zvz...funnily I do not know who either player was. It was one of the rare occasions when it got to to a later game in a zvz. One player got more ahead and ahead with his muta count and also upgrades and bases I believe. At some point, he was so ahead that he said to himself, "fuck it, I will kill him." So he attacked into one of the last of his opponents mining base. It was at the time when spores were just buffed to 45dmg to mutas so he lost 30+ mutas to like 6 or 7 spores as he was not yet used to the new power of those towers. Then he lost the game very quickly.
One of my favorites was Scarlett vs. DRG at MLG Anaheim where she offraced as Protoss while down 0-1 in a bo3 series against one of the best Zerg players in the world at the time... and took the game off him with a 7 gate all-in. I think she rode that momentum to take the series as well, but that game 2 was such a hype match.
Yes, I was semi-pro in 2019 and my highest record was 6400 mmr on EU ladder as zerg. In mid 2020 I stopped playing competitevely and focused on my RU YT channel (ua-cam.com/users/BassetH). As for StarCraft 2 experience, I've been following the scene actively since 2011-2012.
Mine isnt an esports match. It's episode 39 of husky's bronze league heroes when zerg destroyed the enemy's final building with 1hp on their spine crawler
best moment for me is still 2019's Katowice with soO completing his revenge on Stats with a sweep to become the iem champion after being down 0-2 and clearly a little shaken. and that's while ignoring all the crazy bracket that he has after barely squeezing out of group stage
The moments I remember most is one of Partings PvTs where the Terran had him cornered, outnumbered and laid down mines. Parting however walked one blink stalker over one of the mines into the bio and blinked out as the mine shot went off killing the squad of bio leading to a Parting win. Also great content FGC content would also be good to watch no shortage of stories there.
This was a better Bomber moment. Dying to buried banelings isn't that interesting. This was an entirely new strategy. ua-cam.com/video/zjEkgCBMJ0Y/v-deo.html
One moment that I recall more recently was a game between soO and TY, involving a 80+ supply mine drop in the middle of a fight. Here's Lowko's casting of the event: ua-cam.com/video/qt6A7OeKhrQ/v-deo.html
I'd say DRF vs life game 4 Iron Squid 2 is missing, i'd say this tournamnet had one of best grand finals EVER. Legendary Life's reverse sweep, game 4 and game 7 realy memorably. Game 4 when he was 0-3 and went for crazy ling attack into lings + queen on ramp of DRG, eaven Day9 calling it a realy bad move, and somehow he actualy get the win there, proceeding to win 2 more games, going into game 7 when DRG went for all-in (smth like 6 pool or so, dont remember exact timing) while life went for hatch first, resulting in 6 lings in life's base before his pool is finishted, and somehow microing his way to victory in this game.
I'm not sure why the community ranks the archon toilet so highly. The mechanic was borderline cheese and so imba that it had to be patched out of the game entirely. Maybe I'm biased because I hate Protoss but I would rank Scarlet v Bomber as #1 simply because it was such a jaw-dropping end to what is imo the best game of SC2 ever.
Not a big fan of the archon toilet highlight. It was a wildly broken mechanic that was rightfully removed from the game. At least baneling landmines, micro, and nukes are still a thing.
"Most memorable": okay, that's subjective, so it's fine. "Greatest moments of SC2 esports history": Nope, any list that doesn't include Serral becoming the first non-Korean world champion ever is wrong.
Thanks for making these "documentary" like videos that remind me of those good old days! There are a lot to be covered, like others have mentioned. I was thinking of a trilogy: Serral ending the Korean era is definitely a good storyline, as well as the story of the Korean second-place king, Soo. And the fact that Serral's straight wins was first taken down by Soo in IEM 2019 Katowice (and the later eventually winning the whole thing). Would love to watch more GSL content, including: - The era of four horsemen - How Byun single-handedly cause the nerf of reaper - Scarlett as the first female player to win a premier tournament is a good pick too For memorable senses, I can't remember when but I am sure they happened: - a TvT match (should be played by any two of TY, Maru and Cure) with a top-level game-sense to medivac drop to the main base of the opponent when he was fairly behind and winning the game. - Lurker hold fire, just like the effect of borrowed banes in the video, by Scarlett also? - Mass DT Shadow Stride by Stats?
I only remember number 2. Was it Maru who also nuked his own army in GLS? There was also a game in the GLS final between MVP and TOP, super long TvT, my favorite.
REALLY expected the greatest mindgame (halluc army into ragequit) to be here...imho a way better moment than the Huk vs Naniwa battle which was very intense, but also very bad by todays standards.
I remember when Innovation was on the top and seemed unbeatable with his relentless macro and parade pushes vs zerg. Then he faced DRG who already seemed like a washed up former champion and DRG went toe to toe with Inno's macro play beating him straight up in extremely intense back and forth games.
One of my fav game is Time vs Reynor. Best current Terran vs best current Zerg player. The match was problably one of the most intense back and forth, i still couldnt believe Time can fought his way out of that position and won that match.
When MKP first came into the scene, he entered a tournament with the name BoxeR. Everyone thought he was the actual BoxeR from sc, until later they found out he wasnt. They nicknamed him FOXER (As in Fake Boxer). Anyways. This was the match who put him in the map. It was in the early seasons of WOL, i actually catched the match live. I was confused looking at the Jinro vs Choya fight, thinking 'the terran army just straight up wins that fight anyway, right?'. And yeah, even before the nuke hits, P was basically dead. 4 collossi doesn't beat that huge concave of bio- it only killed 4 collissi and 2 stalkers. Templars used the Storms on the Vikings before and were EMPed... Zealots without shields against that much bio was hard, the real battle started between the Ghost vs Templars, and Ghost won while the Templars were being used to kill the Vikings
