  • Bao Bao, a giant panda born in the United States, has begun its new life in Chengdu, capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, after more than 16 hours of flight from the U.S. on Tuesday.
    Like other giant pandas that were born and raised overseas, the three-year-old female is facing a series of challenges in her new home.
    After health check by staff members of Chengdu Inspection and Quarantine Bureau on Wednesday morning, Bao Bao now stays in a 100-square-meter enclosure at the Dujiangyan base of the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda where it’ll be kept isolated for the month-long quarantine.
    Breeders said understanding commands in Sichuan dialect is an challenge for the U.S.-born panda, and they will train it to react commands in Chinese intonation later.
    "It doesn’t react to our commands on eating food. It needs more time to acquaint with breeders here. Now it just understands English commands," said a breeder.
    Moreover, Bao Bao will be expected to adapt to local bamboo and Chinese-style bread. Now it always throws the Chinese-style bread aside, just eating puffing biscuits, said breeders.
    "We gradually reduce the amount of biscuits, and increase the amount of our bread," said a breeder.
    For its health assessment, breeders here are required to record the giant panda's daily feed intake, fecal output, movement and other behaviors.
    So far, Bao Bao is reportedly in good health condition though it seems a little bit nervous in her indoor habitat.
    Bao Bao, which means "precious" or "treasure" in Chinese, was born on August 23, 2013 at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington D.C., the second panda to be born there. She is the 11th overseas-born panda to return to China.
    Bao Bao's mother Mei Xiang and father Tian Tian moved to the zoo in 2000 under a collaboration agreement between China and the United States. Under the agreement, panda cubs born in the United States to parents on loan from China must be returned to China before they are four years old.
    Their first born, Tai Shan, came in 2005, and their third, Bei Bei, was born in 2015. The mating pair and their youngest cub remain in Washington.

    BAO BAO, our beautiful girl does understand everyone who gives her food she likes. No word needed. She also does understand "sign-language", which, I am sure the New Keeper was shown. Bao Bao is precious (as other Giant Pandas, too), she is healthy and if a knowledgeable person works with her, everything will be fine. Both have to adjust. Love you precious girl ❤....we'll never forget you!

    What Einstein didn't anticipate communication issues when the Panda's are only given commands in English. It's certainly avoidable, given the amount of words used in their verbal commands- probably under 30. There was the same issue with Mei Lun and Mei Huan who came from Atlanta a few months ago. Really all new Cubs born in both Countries need to be trained in Chin. and Eng. Pandas are more than capable of learning commands in .both languages

      I agree.. There is no excuse for them not teaching the young cubs, the dialect of china, before sending them to China.. Even a few commands..So sad..

    her keeper should try to say the commands in English and Chinese. That's what I do with my kids (I'm babysitter) to teach them Spanish. I repeat the words in Spanish and English. Hola/Hello. Works for me very well... after a few times they get it and I don't need to use the words in English.

    Bao Bao looks very stressed to me, bobbing her head, restless walking around, this is kind of sad. Look carefully at the video. I posted this on their twitter account they banned me and deleted all including their original post, curious if it's going to be the same here. She is precious indeed, she should not have been shipped to China like an expensive parcel. Pandas are listed as 'vulnerable' just like the polar bears. I don't see how the whole breeding and conservation argument holds water.

      Claudia Ionita everything is so new for her. she is in a new place with people who are stranger and talk to her in a different language. she must be stressed. hopefully she will be fine soon.

      Claudia Ionita I have watched Bao Bao in person, in pictures, and in videos since she was born. She seems relaxed in this video. The "bobbing her head" is what USA Bao Bao fans call the "door dance." It is a stereotypic behavior but one she learned from her mother, Mei Xiang, who does it when she is impatient to go out. All of Mei's cubs have imitated and picked this up. She has always been an active bear, seemingly more than is typical, and the wandering around is also consistent with her baseline behavior. She did this in her outdoor enclosure at the National Zoo. She seems to enjoy walking around and does it until something catches her attention- bamboo, enrichment, climbing trees, a log (she loves logs!). I'm also not surprised she knocked away the panda bread and then left that area. It's a new taste to her and if she doesn't like it and she can see that there are no more leaf eater biscuits (the red rectangle they fed her - these came with her from the National Zoo), it is consistent with her personality to just get up and walk away.

      gracekb Agreed! As I was watching this I was hoping it was simply some sort of translation error and that he wasn't actually referring to our precious Bao as an "it."

    • @38harpstrings
      @38harpstrings 7 років тому +8

      The speaker could be using a genderless pronoun which exists in the Chinese language. These may be soundbites from longer conversation where BaoBao would have been identified as female. Can't say for sure since I don't understand this dialect Chinese. But I agree, our American-born panda is a "she!"

      Barbara Low In Chinese, he she and it sounds the same, even in Sichuan dialect.

    • @sprinklefriend
      @sprinklefriend 7 років тому +2

      It is a translation thing - "it" when referring to someone in third person doesn't mean what we think of in English.

    • @RocknRuo
      @RocknRuo 7 років тому +3

      She or he or it all sounds the same in Chinese. "It " normally refer to non human beings. So the translator's assumption is gramma correct.
