What a lovely young man. I’m in my 70’s and have very happy memories of a 1970’s VW camper van I had for a while in my 50’s. I often wish I still had it, so I fully understand how difficult it is to let something like that go. I sold mine to a young couple who were planning an adventure to the wilds of the west coast (in Canada). I’m sure it went on to provide them much happiness as well. I hope the same for your van. Thanks for bringing back such wonderful memories.
Agree fully - I sold my beloved 1991 Delica L200 which I had invested much time and love to build up the way I wished. Sold it to a lovely couple who just graduated University and wanted a rig they could live out of as they did their windsurfing trip down to the Baja prior to settling down and getting "real jobs" - they sent me photos for the next 2 years of their adventures living out of the van. It was so fantastic to see them following through on their dream using the vehicle I had kitted out and this video also brings back many good memories!
This in India is sold as Maruti Suzuki Omni and is one of the most sold cars in India and used to be sold till 2015.. I used to go to my school in this. Pure nostalgia
This video was a masterpiece. From your camera angles to the fact you was wearing the same colours as the van, I loved every second of it. I sat here for a full 43:53 and didn’t even consider clicking off. I came here looking to buy a Suzuki carry and get some more details and ended up watching something heartfelt and emotional, great job!
I used to work for a company attaching billboards, and the company always had some old cars for the folks who didn´t had their own cars. So one day they came up with this Suzuki. We all were laughing like "This is a toy, not a car to work with." But we were wrong. Everything fitted into that van, even the the biggest fellow worker and the largest ladder. Just a matter of using the room thoughtful.
I see a van with a PSP as the entertainment system along with UMD movies and games, I have to give it respect. As someone with 3 PSPs, almost 300 UMD movies, and almost 400 games, I absolutely love it when the PSP gets love, especially since I use it as a wonderful entertainment setup whenever I travel. My travel bag always has a PSP or two and some UMD movies in it. Can't travel without it.
every dew months i come back and watch this video. i dont know what it is but this adorable little van has driven its way straight into my heart, it spurred me into learning a bunch about campervans and other little mobile camping situations. 11 months later and i still dream of getting my drivers liscence, getting a van like this, and driving off into the sunset
Loved this. We can chase increasing levels of comfort in a van year after year as money allows, but I guarantee the fun and excitement will never be better than these first experiences. A cracking little van, and a story well told. 👌 👏👍
I usually wouldnt watch a 44 minute video on a camper van - time and work (I have a full time job, and am part-time postgrad student), but this was very enjoyable to watch. Having a Mazda Bongo myself, the tour of your Suzuki was incredble it being a much smaller camper. The level of engineering gone into such a small van to make it into a very practical camper is amazing. I think your video skills and narrative are simply brilliant, theres no unecessary music, just you telling a fantastic story about your amazing camper van. I really empthaise with your 'letting things go' statement as well, my other hobby is amateur radio, and I had a number of older radios, that ment alot to me being the firsts one I had, but I needed to solidfy and simplify my setup, and as much as I wanted to 'keep' the memorys, it was time to pass them onto another good home, rather than the compliexties of operating and maintaing older equipment (which I think is your point about your lovely van, it takes love to keep it going !). Apologies for the really long comment, but this was a brilliant video and cannot thank you enough. I wish you and your family well. Kind Regards, Al.ze.
No need to apologise, I really enjoyed reading your comment! Thanks so much for watching, I think this is definitely my favourite video that I made in 2021 and I'm so glad at the reception it's recieved!
Loving that you matched your outfit to the van! I think you made some smart upgrades to the camper.. What a wonderful Dad to surprise you with a full electrical upgrade for off-grid camping. Your description of the sleeping set up as a step up from a tent cracked me up! My son loves the PSP, too!
Cars can absolutely worm their way into your heart. My GF refers to her somewhat regretful-about-times-lost tales about her first car as "Saab stories".
man, of all the camper vans, other than the absence of air conditioning this for me literally is the dream camper van to live and work in when on the road! Cheap, functional, quirky and charming. What a dream you have been able to live in while on the road!
What a beautiful, touching story. I have to admit I am all teary-eyed at the end there when you talked about your sister and giving up the van. It was so nice to hear a gentle philosopher in this crazy day and age.
What an excellent video. You're a great story teller. I lived in a V.W. van for three years, before it was cool. You can't do that anymore, the world just moves too fast. You brought back good memories, thanks.
I've long suspected that most down votes are unintentional due to the awkward location of the "thumb's down" icon near the center of the screen and the lack of a subsequent confirmation step. I believe many of them are just folks trying to scroll down on handheld devices and tapping that icon inadvertently. The fact that UA-cam removed the display of downvotes stats some while back rather bears that hunch out. It seemed most every video, no matter how inoffensive, was racking up about 1% of views as downvotes almost uniformly--which just says "margin of error" to me.
Absolutely brilliant video mate, what an amazing little van, and what a great owner it's had. Loved everything from this video, the van itself, the story about the Rascal/Carry and your brief account of the island of Raasay, the clean electrical system, the rest of your collection, the crisp shots, how you show every detail from the plugs to the choke to the passthru, your humour hahaha , the fact that you have a PSP 3000 mounted to the dash, that you use a modded iPod Classic for music, its time as a Suzuki Marry, its name, the story about letting it go. Just an amazing video all around, the kind of videos UA-cam needs more of.
the part where your sister wanted to be in that van on her wedding day made me smile. but seeing her get in the van made me teary eyed. I don't even know you guys. it's my first time to see any of your videos. this is a nice wwrm video. love this
Love the van and the stories. I'd be in the queue to buy if I hadn't bought my own 1997 Super Carry camper a week ago. Drove home overnight from Somerset to the Highlands and it didn't put a foot wrong. Really identify with the noise and driving quirks though. Thanks Calum
I didn't realize you matched your outfit to the van until the monologue at the end and it made me happy. I've got a eurovan westy and I try not to think about when I'm no longer going to have it
I watch these for pure escapism from my current lifestyle… (kids in late teens, bills overwhelming, etc…) I intend to downsize as soon as possible and this is so magnificently inspiring. Thank you.
My family owned one in the 90s. It took us all over the place in Costa Rica. I learned to drive in a Super Carry at 11 years old, ‘cause it was the only vehicle where I could reach the pedals. 😂 I’ve been a Suzuki fan ever since. Awesome video, man!
I got one of this, used it as transporter to carry my family's bicycles for a group ride, have a good laugh with loved ones including my grandson, not worry about its shortcoming. Sweet memories were made around this cute van.
Absolutely love the character of the van, it is a very cool little beast and as someone said previously, you will never beat the thrill and memories of this van once you have moved on to newer, more comfy bigger vans.
In 1991, as a 190cm. 120kg, 26 year old, I bought an 800cc Suzuki Carry, in Darwin, Northern Territory. Then over the next 10 months, i drove 25,000km going to Alice Springs, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, & finally sold it in Brisbane! Some scary moments when being overtaken by road trains, & we would have come off second best if we'd hit a kangeroo! The motor never missed a beat, but i can confirm what Calum said about the heat rising from the engine ( 45C outside - much warmer inside!) Happy Days!!
It is now July 2023. Thank you, Calum, for a thoroughly enjoyable episode about your former campervan. You brought back memories for me of building the interior for my first pick up truck camper (1968) and building the interior for my window van conversion (1972), which was a never finished project until the gasoline (petrol) crisis pushed me out of in favor of a Honda Civic. I agree, the design ideas were thoroughly worked out, and you built upon them with your own creativity. I wish I had photos of my projects, but so far, I still have vivid memories. All the best.
Yes when I first began to watch this video I thought to me self that this is the typical evolution of the K-van and then you said just that, I had a little chuckle to myself. Just love the idea of the small truck camping movement in Japan, thanks for the video tour.
Wow, you have done so much on your van to make it your own. And what a Dad to sort you out with that great electrical system, he is priceless! 😄 I've seen the later video where you have your new desk, so I guess you decided to keep it. Fabulous! I am very envious of your independent and fun travelling lifestyle! Thank you Calum! 👍🌲😊
This video hits me in so many ways. Passion for tiny/intentional living, travel, reminding me of my years in Scotland and my love for the people and country.
Wow absolutely enjoyed every second of this video which I found randomly. What a fantastic little camper. I drove one of these vans many years ago for a friend who had a florist shop and is occasionally deliver the flowers. I’d never recommend driving one of these at 80mph 😂. Great video and I had to subscribe 👍👍👍
Thank you so much for sharing you life and loves with us! So many things in life cut across all walks of life - brought many smiles to my face! Cheers!! Kev
Yeah, I definitely think that if you are working with the space of a kei van for a camper, having the two back doors is actually a disadvantage. Definitely a little more space could be utilized along one wall if it didn't have a door there. But man I love this, I've been on a kick of checking out these little camper conversions on UA-cam and I'm loving every single one
Very wonderful informative video young man. I like some who have chimed in i had a 71 Volkswagen Westy I wish I still had it don't sell this cute little Van you'll regret it later in life blessings from the hills of Southern Oregon
A car is always what you have experienced with it. Specially the first car will allways be something special. You will keep the memory forever either way, no need to keep the car. Nice story, well told, thank you for sharing.
My wife and I used to tour in a Honda Acty van which we took from Sydney Australia to Adelaide in south Australia, the Acty was a 550cc two cylinder based on the right hand two cylinders of a Honda Goldwing motorcycle.
Absolutely enjoyed this video which I accidentally stumbled upon this evening. You’ve done a great job on the van, and gained lots of memories. Can’t wait to watch your other videos. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺 👋🏻👋🏻
What a superb little camper van. It seems like it's just in its element in the wilds of Scotland. Clearly that Scottish company that fitted it out were really using their heads with laudable fit and finish by real craftsmen. It's just what you need for reasonable comfort and no more.
Such a neat little van, fun fact about the PSP they did a "go explore" kit for them, which included a car holder and GPS unit you attached to the USB on the device.
Amazing! SO many features in such a tiny package. Maybe not the most comfortable but it would seem reliable and create possibilities that may not be achievable in a full sized RV
Absolutely brilliant video . It really is amazing what you can fit into such a small space . Once I started to watch , I had to see it to the end . Well done to you and thanks for posting 👍👍👍👍
Calum, i have just came across your vid and wow, as mentioned on earlier posts, this has got to be one of the most honest and in detailed view of a very small campervan. Hats off to you for the love, work & effort you have put into your treasured vehicle, not forgetting your dad also, loved the vid, the van and your presentation, thank you.
Such a shame your channel "only" has 45.000 subscribers - this is a stellar video! It has everything, a bit of objective showaround, and lots of great personal experiences and anecdotes :) Having one of those tiny, preferably self-built campers, is a dream of mine that I'll hopefully fulfil one day. I love the idea of having a self-reliant tiny mobile home. Now it may be too late for this camper to ask, but would a larger 4G antenna maybe helped with the connection problems? And what about maybe adding a solar panel to recharge the battery on the go?
Thank you! Though 45k subscribers is a dizzying number of subs I couldn’t ask for much more! 4G and internet isn’t really an issue anymore, we get full 4G in most areas - and super fast broadband!
That was a really enjoyable video, thank you. But the best bit was the short recount of your sister's wedding - that gave me the biggest smile. Lovely tale.

I want to buy it from you, tour Scotland & the isles then drive it back to Kernow (slowly & over time) for a refurb. I'm close to buying a 2005 Carry, but it has nowhere near the character of yours. Please let me know whether or not it has been sold. Meur ras (Thank you).
Ha, I passed my test in January and bought a Suzuki Carry as my first car. Currently treating rust before making a sweet camper. Here for some ideas! Great content, thanks.
Nice to see some love for the PSP. Remember playing Medal of Honour and Motorstorm while camping back in the day. Respect for driving it hundreds of miles, that's a feat of endurance.
It was something of a comeback for style. The previous generation of vehicles had been designed with rigidly applied rulers, and the very few exceptions didn't look very good. As a kid, I appreciated these little things for their looks.
Very much enjoyed that, always wondered what it your van was like. Love the compact camper style vans (like foresty forest's old minivan if your aware of him on youtube). Sure somebody is going to enjoy being the new owner of Bamse.
The fact that the PSP from Sony got discontinued in 2014, just before you got your van here, adds to the retro feel of the whole video. Beautiful vehicle, and a touching story to go along. Subscribed.
Beautifully filmed (how do they do it,,?) No shaking around, like people talking while they film on a camera phone! And much sharper filmed, than on a camera zone ! I would personally get claustrophobia in these small motorcaravans, and would HAVE a larger one, for that reason.(,,Not kidding). But an interesting "tour," of his van, with all of his first class storage modifications! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
So funny, it's like you are an unaware fan of 'ugly', or maybe aware... Just an awesome camper, just love it ! It has all the hallmarks of Low-Fi cheep mass production and the furniture is just great, a real time capsule. Love how you have such a strong bond with the little vehicular creature. You should see the interior of my place, all late 70s, early 80s mash up... really ugly in a cool way.
Great video! When you mentioned holding onto things for sentimental reasons or to hold onto the memories made during that time- even thought it just sits there now- really spoke to me. This is why my shop looks like an auto collection gone awry! Time to let someone else make new memories with them!
🙏🏼Yeah , that hit me too. So I’m getting an RV and going across the US. I’m going to see the sights. Route 66 , other bucket list things and the people I love scattered throughout this beautiful country 💪🏼🙌🏼. Can’t wait to see the NV200 when you’re done.
I had to drive one of these for work for 5 years I'm 6ft 1 I had to drive up really steep hills with a van full of stock sometimes I was in 2nd gear thinking I'm not going to make this hill but it always got me up real work horse it was heavily used and abused but just kept going I ended up enjoying driving it Great video thanks for sharing hope the van finds a great home I would love this van ❤️
I just saw one of these parked on a street in edinburgh with a 'for sale' sign - i've emailed them about it because it just seems TOO good to pass up. wee belter!!
I've been studying van designs and my main concern is that on my islands, roads are a lot narrower, hence big, full-sized vans won't work. You've just answered a great big question--a van this small could actually work. Plus I was pleasantly surprised at how well you presented this van--you're a natural at this, arencha'??? That and the van made me subscribe. PS> How much you want for the van? ;)
Exactly! You can get by with motorhomes and the like but they just become a burden. Plus much easier to find a place to camp in one of these! The NV200 is the perfect van for that sort of island & highland travel, imo. As for the van, I've still got her! I've not activley put her up for sale so she's still sitting safe, there's a few folks interested- If you want her I'd be happy to chat, the big issue for everyone is more getting her - you'll need a trailer as she isn't road registered! feel free to email me - calumraasay (at) gmail.com
Very interesting, thank you for showing us. I've never seen a van that small, pretty cool. I couldn't imagine taking someone camping with me in that, we would just be in each other's way the whole time 😂
I just found your channel must say it brings back good memories I'm in my 70s and not allowed to drive any more as im very sick now use a wheelchair as I have COPD I am envious but only in a nice way just keep going as long as you can as you never know what's round the corner may god protect you and your's

I've seen the later video where you have your new desk, so I guess you decided to keep it. Fabulous! I am very envious of your independent and fun travelling lifestyle!
Thank you Calum! 👍🌲😊
Me waiting for Calum to say: "Now let's see al the quirks and featurs of this van" after the opening
-Doug- Calum the type of guy who considers standing room a luxury
This video hits me in so many ways. Passion for tiny/intentional living, travel, reminding me of my years in Scotland and my love for the people and country.
Thank you Cveta! I really appreciated the reaction to this video
Cheers!! Kev
Nice so many comfy stories, what a lovely adventure you had with this unique vehicle!
A great video, Calum. I love that you also understand that cars are invested with personal memories. Thanks.
Great little design for the size of the van. The bed design was thinking outside the box, but may not be for everyone.
A car is always what you have experienced with it. Specially the first car will allways be something special. You will keep the memory forever either way, no need to keep the car. Nice story, well told, thank you for sharing.
You have packed a lot into the vehicle to make it "campable". Well done!
One thing I think I missed though was toilet and shower facilities.
Shower maybe, but I'd rather not have to deal with any toilets!
Bought this as a first car and has a custom tinkered iPod, you sir are where I want to be in life! Love it!
I would never look at a PSP and think anything other than
“That’s cool”
My wife and I used to tour in a Honda Acty van which we took from Sydney Australia to Adelaide in south Australia, the Acty was a 550cc two cylinder based on the right hand two cylinders of a Honda Goldwing motorcycle.
Absolutely enjoyed this video which I accidentally stumbled upon this evening.
You’ve done a great job on the van, and gained lots of memories.
Can’t wait to watch your other videos.
Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺 👋🏻👋🏻
Glad you enjoyed it! I actually have a wee video that I released a few months back on the Australian Mini-Trac!
What a superb little camper van. It seems like it's just in its element in the wilds of Scotland. Clearly that Scottish company that fitted it out were really using their heads with laudable fit and finish by real craftsmen. It's just what you need for reasonable comfort and no more.
It really is fantastically thought out!
"a double bed on a motorcycle"
I love it! XD
My next project!
It's reliable indeed
It would be worth seeing a tour of your new van now. Thank you so much for the video. What a precious little van!
As per usual, we have no clue what you were going to post, and as per usual, it’s 44 minutes of enjoyable wholesome content :)
Man, you made ME nostalgic and attached to this thing, and I've never even heard of it before!
Absolutely brilliant video . It really is amazing what you can fit into such a small space . Once I started to watch , I had to see it to the end .
Well done to you and thanks for posting 👍👍👍👍
Looks like a wonderful little island to live on. Wish I could visit one day. It seems so beautiful and tranquil.
Great review of your camper van. Never knew you could fit so much in a Suzuki super carry! 😊👍
It has everything, a bit of objective showaround, and lots of great personal experiences and anecdotes :)
Having one of those tiny, preferably self-built campers, is a dream of mine that I'll hopefully fulfil one day.
Here in August 2022 and he has 124k subscribers and about to get one more! 😊
That was a really enjoyable video, thank you. But the best bit was the short recount of your sister's wedding - that gave me the biggest smile. Lovely tale.
Now Sold 😭 ua-cam.com/video/4D3CxwSHQ18/v-deo.html
Since many of you asked, here's the review of my OTHER Suzuki Kei Car - My 2005 Convertable Suzuki Jimny! ua-cam.com/video/iBcBllPUAmk/v-deo.html 🚙
I want to buy it from you, tour Scotland & the isles then drive it back to Kernow (slowly & over time) for a refurb. I'm close to buying a 2005 Carry, but it has nowhere near the character of yours. Please let me know whether or not it has been sold. Meur ras (Thank you).
Your job??
This dude is always concerned with "jumping up and making quick get-aways" 🤔😂
So cute. I'm mentally personalising this little space to suit me and my dog!!! Ohhh I can dream.
Haha I just hope your dog isn't too big!
@@CalumRaasay I think she would manage a 360° ok just about haha 😄
In india, we call this the "The Kidnapping Van"
Hell yeah.
Makes sense
😂 true
They are school vans as well
Every country calls the cargo van the kidnapping vehicle. Its not funny or interesting. Just obvious.
I love the aesthetics of this, last generation of vehicles to be designed with pencils & markers
It was something of a comeback for style. The previous generation of vehicles had been designed with rigidly applied rulers, and the very few exceptions didn't look very good. As a kid, I appreciated these little things for their looks.
See ya pulling the tractor out of the garage I had to keep watching. I love that Suzuki
omg literally sent u an email about it a few days ago. Love your videos!
That's what made me get off my arse and make the video, so thank you ;)
The importance of the PSP 3000 cannot be underestimated!!!
🙏
Thank you! Greatest portable of our generation! Haha
Subscribed.
Oh wow that’s amazing!
I love those little Kei vehicles, this may be the first I have heard of a campervan version. I like it.
Camper vans should be passed to the next adventurer to make their memories.
Love the mustard stripes on the van and the sweater
AHHH The Suzuki Super Marry Defiantly An instant Classic. Calum For The Wind!!!!!!!
I would *love* to own that van - unfortunately my wife would disown me.... hmmm, how much do you want for it?
Great vid btw
Thanks for the comment! Yeah it’s something I’ve been thinking a lot about recently. I guess we’re only custodians in the end!
What a cool wee car, van, MINI bus, heck use your imagination. Thanks for sharing I hope the next owner does it proud around Scotland.
Fantastic video Calum. I want one!
I had to drive one of these for work for 5 years I'm 6ft 1 I had to drive up really steep hills with a van full of stock sometimes I was in 2nd gear thinking I'm not going to make this hill but it always got me up real work horse it was heavily used and abused but just kept going I ended up enjoying driving it
Great video thanks for sharing hope the van finds a great home I would love this van ❤️
I once attached a tent to my matchbox car! JK, good video mate.
Calum did you manage to find a new owner for your van? Just interested?
Very interesting, thank you for showing us. I've never seen a van that small, pretty cool. I couldn't imagine taking someone camping with me in that, we would just be in each other's way the whole time 😂
Ah, just how I like my deathtraps.
Cozy.
😂🙌🏼
I just found your channel must say it brings back good memories I'm in my 70s and not allowed to drive any more as im very sick now use a wheelchair as I have COPD I am envious but only in a nice way just keep going as long as you can as you never know what's round the corner may god protect you and your's
this vid makes me want to save up and buy a van and travel around.
Do it!
33:08 I think that with a bit of foam pillows in a textile cover, you would sleep a lot more comfortably.
In india this car name is omni and omni came with 800cc engine
