@@squarewave2 I should of used the word domestic threat, but any current or future president could lie their way into the white house and fool the masses, then it's downhill from there or say there is a disaster, maybe a Carrington event then this fragile country is ripe for the taking from someone who promises to "fix things"...I like knowing I can protect my family and I am not counting on govt to do the right thing or be there when necessary.
As usual, you are so misguided and so wrong about most of what you had to say. Lets look at a few points, MANY people have had fingers, hands and arms removed with using a table saw. However, your table-saw is no less, nor more, dangerous than you 22 riffle. Owned by responsible people either of these items are harmless. It is the person who operates these devices who is ultimately going to make the difference. I had an acquaintance/distant friend, who had thugs break into his house at 3 AM. There were two of them and they were heavily armed and obviously ready and capable of killing my friend and his family. Instead, next to his bedside. he had his 12 gauge, pump shotgun which he quietly, picked up, shot and killed both of the intruders as they got to the top floor of his house where the bedrooms are. Without that quick action, the story would have been very different and he, his wife and two children, may have been slaughtered. So John, if you remove the 400 to 500 millions of riffles and pistols in this country, every thug would have another weapon within hours. AND those of us, including you, would be defenseless against the next attack in the middle of the night. So, once you remove all of these weapons, next, you'll need to remove every knife, razor blade, screwdriver and anything sharp. Next, lets remove cars and trucks since we have seen those used to mow down people very often in the last couple of years. Now, lets remove all rocks and stones and sling shots. Didn't Cane kill Able with a rock against his head? Now where I do agree with you, is there are way too many irresponsible young, mostly, thugs who have purchased guns of one kind or another. I agree with more stringent back ground checks. Additionally, make it a federal crime whenever a gun is used to commit a crime with a mandatory sentence of 30 years without parole; life if the weapon was fired. Responsible citizens should be allowed to own guns for defense but NO ONE is allowed to use that weapon in a crime. It's not the average American who is doing his or her best to take care of there family which are committing these crimes. It's mostly thugs who have been arrested and many are under the age of 30. Why don't you strive to remove all criminals from society, once completed, I'll be the first to give up my guns. I don't hunt, nor have any interest in collecting guns of any kind. I'd rather spend the money on a new spectrum analyzer. HOWEVER, as long as there are thugs out there who don't have a problem breaking into our homes at 3 AM, I'll keep my shotguns and encourage you to have a few as well.

They claim that the device itself is not to blame for injury but the irresponsible or demented owner is to blame. Yes, we all know that guns do not kill people, people kill people. But While the careless table saw owner can only cut off his finger, the disturbed gun owner can mow down a dozen victims in a few seconds. And then the gun lover will ask us if we should ban all power tools and all automobiles. What a ludicrous argument. You mention that a friend used a shotgun to repel a house invasion. This is purely anecdotal and not statistically important. According to a Harvard University analysis, the latest data show that people use guns for self-defense only rarely.
