No matter what you think of Bernie Sanders, whether or not you agree with his policies, no serious person could ever doubt that he always stands solidly and unabashedly with workers. I think that's why *he consistently gets at least 25% of his votes from Republicans* in his state of Vermont. Even if they disagree with him, they vote for him anyway because they know he's a rare politician who's honest, whom they can trust, and who's always looking for ways to improve the lives of ordinary Americans.

Company based labor union, if you are to put it on effectiveness scale, next to meaningless. It has to be industry based. In Japan for example, industry based labor union never been legalized. As a result, the consumption power of the workers never got to the level of US in 1970s, when the power of the unions reached its peak. Once the out sourcing became common place worldwide, Japanese workers class just fell through to no end. US labor class is not far behind though. I still think the Chinese labor class will suffer most, like we've never seen in the history, when the factories completely move out of the country.
The reason companies despise unions is that they have to contractually deal with each and every employee according to a published rule book. How are you to exploit and divide employees under that system?! It seems that many firms hire somebody and spend enormous resources finding a way to fire them. In this day and age, where unemployment is below 5%, WHY?!
