  • The skies are alive at the Naval Air Missile Test Center, NAMTC, Point Mugu on the California coast in these films circa 1959-1960 as Regulus I missiles are landed by director aircraft. Watch for Navy TV-2 versions of the T-33 flying as drone director and chase aircraft. FJ Fury jets also perform this role, and the occasional F8U-1D Crusader director jet is also filmed. It's all coastal California, with jackrabbits and iceplant if you can catch them onscreen. Later, a rare Temco Corvus air-to-surface missile, intended to knock out radar stations with a small nuclear warhead, is test launched from an A4D Skyhawk out of Mugu. Corvus was discontinued before development was complete.
The Regulus I missile by Vought Aircraft carried forward the U.S. Navy's vision for a post-World War II guided missile that could capitalize on, and surpass, test efforts with U.S. copies of the V-1. Powered as a subsonic cruise missile by one J33 turbojet engine, similar to the powerplant in the P-80 and T-33 Shooting Star, the Regulus I gave the Navy the next step in reliable launch, control, and recovery of unpiloted vehicles. Equipped with landing gear and a braking parachute, Regulus missiles in testing and training could be flown again.
Nuclear-tipped Regulus Is went on patrol with specially configured submarines as an operational element of U.S. strategic policy beginning in the fall of 1959, before the advent of Polaris-equipped submarines.

Was glued to the screen the entire time. Just couldn’t get enough. Liked the end-reminded me of two skeletons screwing on a tin roof. Very noisy. Whelp, back to watching paint dry.

Wow, what a treat. I’m a retired Army Soldier and in 1997-99 I had the pleasure of living on Pt. Mugu while I was assigned to the Army Recruiting Station in Oxnard and we had to use government housing when available and Mugu was a great place to live! Back then Mugu was a place where you could still experience a base that resembled what it was like in the 60’s, the commissary was very old but nice and functional. Down by the beach there were a few concrete pads with block houses or antenna arrays and some were abandoned but one could tell that it played an important role in the past. There’s a very nice RV/camping park there that’s great for retirees to visit that’s near the beach. It’s a real calm and relaxing place to live.

Glad you enjoyed it. As an Air Force civilian employee, I got to experience some neat bases like that in my TDY travels.

I remember the Regulus at the gate of RTC GLAKES where I was a "guest" in May of 1975, proudly joining Zumwalt's "New Navy." When I was a kid Dad served on a GUPPy submarine, so I ate up anything related, including the Regulus program. Later, when I arrived at RTC I recognized it on sight.

Thanks for watching, and adding your story. Always good to her from veterans, and the families of veterans. As a young newspaper reporter, I briefly interviewed Admiral Zumwalt at an event in northern Idaho. Don't even recall what we talked about, but I believe it involved recruiting.

I remember Pt. Mugu as the place we landed to go out to sea for President Reagen to go out to the aircraft carrier to watch the jets fly by. I was on the White House commo team the provided comms for the visit to the carrier. What an experience for an Army soldier to live and work on a carrier. Even if only for a few days. And this film was great also. Thanks.

It’s extremely impressive to see what could be accomplished with 1940s/1950s technology.

Yes! The abilities of remote pilots to guide drone aircraft with proficiency and precision grew immensely in the period following World War II. Thanks for watching and commenting.
