I like swordtails, but platys are probably the best community fish for getting other fish out and social. Any time I have a timid fish I've used a few platys in the tank and soon everyone is up at the glass begging for food.
I once had a red wagtail male platy, that bred with a red female swordtail fish and got about 15 fry they were red with a little bit of black near the end of the tails and the males had a short swordtail.
I'm planning to throw a mix of both Platies and Swordtails in my pond hoping to breed larger tougher fish. The Platies being tougher and Swordtails larger. Natural selection will dictate the traits that survive.

Agreed MacPNW! Platys are great dither fish.
Great information. I'm thinking to breed Plates with Swordtails in my pond so I can a combination of tougher and larger fish.

Platies everytime just because they're not jerks as swordtails can be, whether it's to each other or other species of fish in the tank!
