Slam dunk based on manga released in 1990 and the anime series in 1993. About hanimichi sakuragi, a high schooler with basketball player build and thug attitude who joined his school basketball club initially to impress a girl he liked. In fact this series has influenced basketball growth in Japan significantly. I heard that Slam Dunk also influenced Yuta Watanabe to play basketball. You may wanna start watch the series. It was very funny yet inspiring. although please bear with the anime quality because it was released 30 years ago.
Just for the context of the story, Sannoh is the favorite to win this tournament and Shohoku is a team to watch but not many expected them to beat this team since they are also the defending champions. They also didnt show the first couple of games that they played prior to this game(i think this is the 3rd round and Shohoku's 2nd opponent in the tournament is no push over) just like some people have said, in the manga and anime, Hanamichi is the main character and he only started playing ball when he entered 1st year in highschool to impress a girl(so during this tournament, he's been playing for way less than a year it probably around 6 months hence why keeps making the most basic of turnovers) but for this movie the creator decided to focus on Miyagi since out of the five starters, his back story wasn't explored much in the manga/anime like the others. I feel like you guys should react to the anime, its a little outdated when it comes to the rules since the manga was released in 1990 and the anime was released in 1993. The jokes could also be considered outdated or even inappropriate due to some characters calling other character Gorilla. But over all, the anime/story is great, which is why this anime/manga is still considered by many as the Godfather of sports manga/anime. And the only sports manga in the all-time best selling mangas of all time. And if you do watch the anime certain things that took place in this movie would make more sense to you. Like why Mitsui gets exhausted easily. This movie is pretty much a "love letter" from the author to the fans of the manga/anime. The author is really passionate about this story and the sport that it revolves around, so much so that when the animation studio tried to force him to change certain thing in the anime and deviate from the manga he told the studio to end the anime, the reason why the anime never reached the ending of the manga until this movie cam out.
