One thing I would like to say about the carrier landing is your supposed to hit the 3 wire every time, you’ve been hitting the one wire
I’m pretty sure the carrier in the game only has 3 wires instead of the 4 wire system that ended with the Nimitz class. Still a 1 wire is not good and as has been said by actual navy members that you cannot progress up through the ranks without consistently hitting a 2 (formerly 3) wire

On the carrier, it's the 3-wire that pilots aim for. And a side note: Hitting the brakes when you hit the carrier deck isn't a good thing, especially if you don't catch a wire.

Firewall those throttles
Yep -- no brakes, full throttle; the cable is your brake and if you bolter you're gonna want full power to get back airborne. #3 wire has always been the target. Not essential but preferred. I don't know whether pilots grade that in debrief or not; I wouldn't think so but meh....
That was with the old 4 wire system. Now that they have a 3 wire system you need to hit the 2nd wire.
@@briane173 At least when I was on deployment (as an avionics tech), they did grade on the wire they hit. Not sure how much it "mattered", but I'd always hear the other pilots joke when the pilot flying would land a bit hard, bounce, etc..

Bent airframes are the best airframes. Straight airframes are for civilians.
In the settings there is something like toggle "menu animations" or something like that. If you turn it ON, the 1,2,3,GO crap will go away like it's supposed to! FYI
That's my main gripe with this game, the menu and UI runs like shit and makes the whole experience feel so slow. FSX looked dated but at least it was snappy. If this setting helps with that I may have to give 'er another go.

this landing challenge actually really helped improve my landings in other aircraft. I never thought about AOA when landing before, now I'm thinking about how it is in relation to my plane every time I land

Or having the ability to start a mission from a carrier, fly a bit then return and land.

@@architectssuck9957 I might but not for the carrier stuff. My main interest in aerial combat is World War II, so I'd try to recreate the Battle of Britain for instance.
I just mentioned I'd like more variety in carrier missions because as it is now, it's just this single carrier landing. And the carrier isn't even moving I guess.
@@AudieHolland the carrier does move. If you watch closely the centreline of the deck will move to the right relative to your approach, since the landing strip is angled in relation to the carrier’s direction of travel.
And yes, I’d love to see more carrier missions including take offs and the ability to use it in free play. It sucks how we can only land an F-18 on it from a short approach. Yeah DCS exists but the appeal with MSFS is the sheer breadth of the ability to dick around and not be serious Mr Military Man all the time.
I suppose there’s a mod out there that takes the official content carrier and uses that as its basis. Time to go searching!

@@Fatallydisorganized Can confirm, have only ever taken flying the lot 20 half seriously at best. Engaging SAM sites with MK82s is much, much easier than trying to remember those godforsaken target codes the HARM uses
Landing on the 3rd wire is the best. Catching the 1st wire means that you almost crashed on the back of the carrier. Go full mil power when you touch the deck in case of a bolter and you don’t catch a wire.

at 3:27 when you rolled off I had a flashback of when I played Top Gun on NES and missed the landing over and over.
MSFS 2020 is a phenomenal game but the content is not as good as it was in the FSX Steam Edition days. Literally all they need to do is add a playable ATC and it'll be like the good old days.

For the record, those voices giving him directions are located just to the left of the flight deck (although I don't think they are modeled here) and called Landing Signal Officers. They are experienced aviators, and have the exclusive job of making sure the plane lands properly.
So they know what they're talking about.

i loved the low alltitude flights, i basiccally fly the F18 on the deck all the time anyway on full burners. but on the carrier i did not, i repeat did not have the ball, i don't think i was even on the same pitch.

I had to try like 5 times but in the end, managed to land catching the third wire 😎
1 wire: Bad, very bad. Your LSO and Skipper will scream at you
2 wire: Better, but skipper and LSO will not be super happy
3 Wire: You rock! LSO and skipper will be happy
4 Wire: same as 2 wire
Wave-Off and Bolter: I mean...safety first. It's ok. Just don't run out of fuel
BTW: When you touch down on a carrier DO NOT APPLY BREAKS! as soon as your wheels touch the deck, Apply mil power. If you caught a wire, it will stop you anyway, but if it snaps or you didn't catch any wire, you'll want to have enough energy to bolter, go arround and try again. Applying breaks in this situation means that your plane will go for a swim

Super Hornets and F-14Bs are mil power
The Hawkeye actually goes full reverse as soon as they touch down to help them slow down since the engines react so quickly that if they didn't catch a wire they can just push full forward
You should try the D77-TC Pelican.
See if you can both figure it out, and get comfortable flying, taking off, and landing.

I used to be the LPO for the turn program and went to the Sim every week for almost a year. I landed on the carrier once. I also did it with the canopy open. :) most of the time I crashed into AIMD.

You should try these power and pitch techniques. Adjust your power to correct for altitude and adjust pitch to correct for airspeed. So for example if you're below glideslope just add a small amount of power and it will gain you some altitude and you'll get back on a perfect glideslope. If your airspeed is too fast, pitch up slightly and you will slow down.
Love your content! I bought FSX on Steam because of you, and whenever I get a new graphics card I'm sure I'll buy FS2020 as well! :P
As odd as it looks, the key to having the perfect landing on the carrier is, you have to be on glideslope, and center on the ball. Once you land do not touch your controls and maintain the glideslope and AOA.

US Navy secretly recruiting people from MSFS Landing Challenge. Clever.
They only really have two criteria:
1. Don't recruit anyone flying like Maverick from the movie.
2. Don't recruit anyone flying like AFP95.
