Willie Stargell had a tremendous arm while playing left field for the Pirates. He had a quick, powerful, and accurate overhand release. His arm was comparable to Clemente's. I was fortunate to see both of them play at Forbes Field.
Great collection over his career. I was behind the Phillies dug out when he hit a homer over dead center fence for a grand slam. Clutch. Definitely the leader on the 79 team and series MVP.
Pops was: 'The Black Babe Ruth'. You could almost hear the baseball screaming after it left the pitcher's hand and saw Willie getting ready to swing! LOL!! A great man, and a real gentle giant. God Bless you Willie, and thank you for the memories. May you RIP.
What a great player and and even better man. So glad I got to see Willie and Roberto play. Those were the days for Pirate baseball. Hope they can compete again someday.
“Chicken on The Hill, with Will.” 21 and 8 My Hero’s. I met them both on a couple occasions at East Hills Shopping Center in Penn Hills when I was a kid. RIP Willy Stargell and Roberto Clemente.
I saw Willie hit the deepest home run ever at Montreal’s Olympic stadium one Saturday afternoon. He absolutely dominated the expos for what looked like a decade ! I am convinced that the expos would have won a few pennants if it wasn’t for Willie . And those expos teams were stacked with talent!
...especially that 1979 team that lost the NL East by 2 games against the eventual WS champs the Bucs... Interestingly, the next two seasons, the Expos also lost out to the eventual WS winner (by 1 game against the Phillies in 1980, and the NLCS in that split-season, strike-shortened 1981 on the Rick Monday HR that propelled the Dodgers to their WS win)
You seen dat one, it was measured at 535 ft. Strawberry 525 isn't a record, at first they measured the ball over 600ft, change it to 525. In my eyes I seen Strawberry hit several longer in shea. Longest as yankee was Tampa Bay which they had great video unlike Montreal homerun it dented the steal poll in right center. Joe Torre called it longest ball he ever seen hit. The ball was traveling like 100 mph in such high distance.
I was a Little Leaguer, and my Dad & oldest brother took me to a weekday nite game at Forbes Field. Willie comes to bat & hits a high ball to RF. I lost it. Then EVERYONE STOOD AND CHEERED. I didnt get it and so asked my dad "where'd it go?" "ITS OVER THE ROOF!" . BTW.. Somebody named Babe hit his 714th HR, playing for the NL Boston Braves, over the same Forbes Field RF roof.
Great video! One of the best that ever put on a Pirates uniform. Among the best that has ever played the game at the major league level. A gentleman worthy of all praise sent his way. RiP Pops!
I used to love watching Big Willie "wind it up" (his bat) before each pitch. He used to club the ball "Flintstone" style. Especially during the great 1979 season.
1979 World Series MVP- He certainly deserved to be one. The Pirates couldn't be a winner without him. Thanks Willie and all the fans from Pittsburgh will miss you forever!
In the early 70’s, 73-74 or so, I was in the Club section of Atl-Fulton County Stadium. This was the very middle of the ring’d stadium. Our Norcross Pop Warner baseball team had won a very big game and the coach bought all the players a ticket to the Braves/Pirates game. I had just bought a huge Dr. Pepper and a bag of pistachios when Willie came to the plate. He whistled a ball straight down the 1st base line foul but I quickly determined it was coming towards my seat. I stood, dropped my drink and pistachios, and held up my hands to nab this baseball. The ball scorched through my hands, bounced off the plexiglass windows behind me and fell down to the field level seats where it landed in the lap of a man who had a raincoat folded on his lap. My hands were numb the rest of the day and I was thirsty. Heckuva drive to hit that ball so far just missing the upper deck. I’ll never forget it.
1973 he led the Major Leagues in doubles, homers, runs batted in, slugging percentage, .OPS and total bases. 1971, 1972 and 1973 he was runner up or third place in the NL MVP voting. Willie was wonderful and outstanding in his playing days.

More than anyone else, I wish I could watch a highlight real of all Stargell's tape-measure bombs over the years. Had the longest ever home run in more than a few MLB stadiums.
Don't remember much of Stargell myself, given my age, but as a Phillies fan I remember that big yellow star attached just above a portal to the concourse from the upper deck at the Vet behind right field. Stargell hit what might have been the longest HR in Vet history to that spot, and whenever I think of how high up that was, I can't imagine anyone hitting a ball that far.
“Spread some chicken on the hill, Will!” - Bob Prince. And what about those uniforms!! They were even more impressive in person. Saw him hit an HR into the next to upper deck in Three Rivers and saw him play with Roberto, Mannie, et al in Forbes Field. I always chose number 8 for my uniforms.
1974 playoffs at Dodger Stadium with two on in the top of the first Stargell crushed a rocket that traveled well into right field pavillion. Shocking blast and sudden. Game over before it got started. Willie hit it off lefty Doug Rau
Awesome selection! My very First Favorite Player. My Absolute Favorite Player is Rod Carew. But it's impossible to find old Twins Highlights for some reason.
@@dominickclaflin5295 No Way? Really? That would be Awesome. He always seems to be forgotten. And I think CUZZ the Twins was such a small market and the 70's for some reason is so hard to find games etc. Twib is a good source but I can't hardly find very much on him other than what's been available in the standard search for a long time. Anything would be great.
What a sorry video. Expecting to see Stargell's famous 3 pump windup before hitting but nooo, every hit is truncated just before contact, omitting the best part.
I grew up in Indiana in the shadow of Cubs fans, Ferguson Jenkens, Ernie Banks, Ron Santos, and Billy Williams; but watching TV... the only baseball team I liked win or lose was the Pittsburgh Pirates -- Willie Stargell, Dave the Cobra Parker, Dave Cash, smiling Manny Sangiyon, Richie Hebner, Omar Moreno, Roberto Clemente, AL Oliver, and Bruce Kison... Yeah the pre-bat swings were terrific...

I’m a fan but I’ve heard from a number of people that he was a jagoff away from the field

Thumbs UP for these great highlights, and Stargell.

1973 , he was the only person between like 1939 and well into the 1990s who had 40hr and 40 doubles

@@joememphis1571 yes it’s amazing that he was the only one in between.
Yea, he should have won the award in 1971.
no batting gloves ,no armor
Willie would be a very rich man if he played in this era.
Pops was as good as it gets. I remember’79 … he carried the Bucs to their championship. Gone way too soon.

Willie Stargell is my favorite. I once saw him launch a home run at Candlestick Park.
He was fun to watch as a kid. I loved imitating that one of a kind warm up

City of Champs in 1979. Pirates and the Steelers. Second city to win the W.S. and S.B. the same season.
He had one of the greatest batting stance in batting.
One of the Greats! God rest your soul, "Pops."
Glad I got to see Pops yank a few out of Three Rivers when I was a much younger lad. One of the great ones.
3:00 Stargell almost had 476 total homers. What a pleasure this video was.
One man homerun factory.

Wow, 1st hit in Shea Stadium. Cool. RIP to both....

Say Hey Willy there goes that baseball. Home Run
Baltimore’s field looked like an abandoned sandlot

of best hitters ever
Robert Guilliame of benson mentioned willie stargell so i checked this out
Did willy stargell play catcher
Outfielder and 1st base.
I think he swung a 50 oz 50" bat, just sayin
When baseball was baseball
You got that right
How many home runs did Stargell hit over the right field roof at Forbes Field?
Most of this video is from his pops year.
Wonder what it was like for a pitcher when facing Dave Parker and Willie Stargell back to back.
Gotta smooth batting stance and swing
I tried to be Willie when I was little
