    The important take-away from this video is to practice emergency braking on a regular basis so you become familiar with the point at which the tires are about to lock up. It's a waste of time to argue if the front tire provides 90%, or 75%, or 65% of the total braking because the coefficient of friction of the pads on the disc brake and the tire on the road is a constantly changing factor. What's important is to recognize the onset of an incipient skid and react quickly to prevent it. Only practice can help that.

    Frt break is key because of Weight Transfer ....Physics ....
    You hit the Brake the Bike dives and the weight of the Bike is mostly on the Front wheel .
    ABS is not on All Bikes Make sure you know What Your Bike Has.
    Practice Practice Practice .......

I've saved my own bacon numerous times in my life over the years simply by being in the moment when I ride and always anticipating all the hazardous situations that could arise based upon my surroundings. It really works well. Now, if I would only do the same when in my truck. lol

    With my bike I can brake faster on dry pavement without ABS, but not on the wet. I like ABS on the wet. Remember straight line breaking only. The intermittent on / off effect of ABS can easily put you down in a corner. It's for straight line braking only.

    I'm here because I just locked up the front wheel on my Suzuki Intruder M109R and went down (separated shoulder joint, couple of cracked ribs and around $3000 worth of damage including new helmet.) Was behind a truck n a 30mph zone in a queue of traffic, don't remember anything unusual in the last moment before it happened but must have instinctively gone for the front brake when the truck pulled up sharp (it seems a car had pulled out on him.) Wasn't that close to him; maybe over-calculated my stopping distance (bike weighs 800 lbs.) Don't recall having grabbed at it any more sharply than usual, but almost immediately after touching that lever I was on the floor. Dry conditions, surface seemed ok, maybe slight camber, but suddenly felt like I was on an ice rink. Don't even remember the bike plunging down on the forks at all, wheel locked up immediately upon first brake contact. Trying to figure out if I really did grab too hard, hope that was it because otherwise I have no idea what happened and therefore no way of preventing it happening again.

    • @TepcoCycleRepair
      @TepcoCycleRepair 6 років тому

      It looked up because you snatched the front faster then the weight can transfer to the front. This is why its hard to practice true emergency braking and why ABS is so important. When you heal, practice two fingers on the front brake at all times and only two to stop the bike. Many riders keep all 4 on the grip then transfer all 4 to the lever (precious distance was lost during this transfer) then apply to much brake to quickly locking it up. 2 fingers on all the time quickens when the brakes are applied and is easier to control pressure..

    • @CorollaNut68
      @CorollaNut68 8 років тому +1

      The recommendation for braking quickly in a turn is to learn to fly because the bike is going down. The most common two choices in a curve...brake hard and lay it down or straighten up and hit the ditch.

    "You cannot brake in a turn"
    Uh, yeah, you absolutely can. It's called trail braking. You add brakes, the bike wants to stand up, so you apply more counter steering input in with the bars and then boom: you're braking and turning at the same time.

    Are you sure the ABS brakes on a motorcycle will help you to win back a "frontwheelslide" - it depends on the speed,
    the steeringangle and the surface. Dont compare the safety of ABS on a motorcycle to a car !

      I was told years, 52 to be exact, the ones who drop their scoot have less injuries than those who try to ride it through. Back in 81 I laid my 80 wide glide down at 80 mph in a curve to the left. Yanked the right handle bar back and down we went. A sore left shoulder but needed no medical and That was all. Now I was drunk at the time so maybe that helped.

    • @marks6663
      @marks6663 6 років тому +3

      lol. No you never keep a lock on. A locked wheel will cause the bike to go out of control. I accidentally locked my rear wheel on the freeway last year. It skidded and started to weave. I immediately released and got back full control. Had I kept it on, either I would have crashed, or the vehicles behind me would have ran me over.

    "burns into the asphalt and turns into ice"???

    • @samuelwear7169
      @samuelwear7169 7 років тому +1

      Sure. You lock the wheel, the friction between the asphalt and the tire causes the surface of the tire to liquidize (that's why you see skid marks), resulting in a total loss of traction (as you'd have if you were riding on ice).
      So while it does sound a little odd the way he put it, it's actually completely accurate.

      Yes Sure he said 90% of your braking is the front brake. Not 90% of the stopping power, which is what you're referring to when using both brakes. when using both brakes, 65/35 stopping power like you state. Some say 75/25 for a sport bike. You only need to use the front brake for the most part.

    • @yessure5291

He also has no idea of what a sport bike can do. I think he needs to learn how to ride and for gods sake get off that pile of garbage Hardley.

      Caz Gerald Your absolutely right on both accounts. The problem is bikes advanced way beyond what Harley has to offer and usually Captains or above make the decisions. They rode when it was like what you said, USA, tradition, and the classic look. If the bikes are only used for parades and show, sure go Harley but when used for enforcement the Harley's need to stay in the garage. These Harley's are straight up sketchy at over about 105 trying to over take a violator.
