Description:
I've done Hexen before nearly 6 years ago with a real-time run using crispy-hexen, but I've never recorded a demo for it. A lot has changed since then as there's been a lot more out of bounds tricks discovered after I used the first one on Necroplois, one of the last levels.
It took a lot longer than I expected to get this run, mostly because I got extremely unlucky during my attempts. Fortunately in all that pain and misery of losing attempts to complete nonsense I came up with some really nice route improvements along the way that has made the whole thing quite easy to do in the end. There's a trick that's quite difficult to pull off on Hypostyle that would save a lot of time and combined with the rest this record could be greatly improved without too much effort.
The route itself, ignoring improvements to the consitency of the tricks, is mostly the same as the previous RTA skill 3 record by o_circles in 7m14s, which is a very impressive time considering how much more difficult it was. Credits to JCD and Ch0wW for coming up with the most important skips with their 8m27s coop run as well as cyanveo for his 9m57 single player run.
This is done on berserker difficulty (skill 4) which is hexens equivalent of ultra-violence and also single segment. Recording and playing demos for hexen is now very simple thanks to kraflabs work on the DSDA-Doom source port.
Comments about the run:
Really good mostly, I just wanted 6m59s, so 13 seconds faster is nice.
Winnowing Hall: I think 8.49 was my best time, lost a second because I had to punch twice to kill the ettin.
Seven Portals: Got the out of bounds stuff quickly so time is good. It's possible to go straight through without having to do the second jump. It's also possible to clip out at the start and enter by jumping on an ettin, but that saves little time and might be a bit difficult so it's probably TAS only.
Shadow Wood: Got the jumps on here somewhat quickly, only got blocked after getting the hammer. A few blocks going for the caves, but nothing terrible.
Caves of circe: Went well, getting blocked a few times is to be expected.
Shadow Wood part2: Incredible time here, both going out of bounds and back in went really quick. Getting back in bounds quickly happens quite often though, but it can also take 10 seconds.
Hypostyle: Really good time here, I've been losing a lot of runs to the pigs not putting me back into the wall properly, so I aim a bit more to the right and it seems to have worked out.
Heresiarch's Seminary: Decent start, it's possible to get all the monsters with the flechettes, but that's not very common. 32 seconds is about what I'd expect if everything goes ok.
Castle of Grief: Also went ok, nothing went really bad, but movement could have been cleaner, maybe by as much as 10 seconds.
Gibbet: Start was good, got blocked a bit going for the upper area. Managed to get out of bounds quickly, and back in bounds relatively quick. About 5 seconds lost overall.
Necropolis: I should have used a disk of repulsion when going for the portal.
Vivarium: Didn't get blocked too badly and didn't have the wall lower which would be a disaster for this level.
Necropolis part2: Out of bounds trick was ok, a bit slow on the repositioning for going back in bounds, but it worked out well. Could of course gone with the fast way and just wake up the monster and hope to get through first try, but I went with the consistent setup since my time was good.
Dark Crucible: Went well, no major issue like failing to place the maulotaur or not getting stuck in the wall quickly enough.
Overall a solid run, but easily improveable with a new discovery I made for hypostyle which would skip having to pick up the porkalator in caves of circe.
Description of the route itself can be found in the txt file included with the demo found on doomworld/dsdarchive.
Enjoy.

"I think you have played this game too long, mortal"
Zero Master: "Not really, just 3 minutes 17 seconds"
Yeah...haha, that was very funny. I call that awesome scripting.
yes, all my lief to be able to finish it in 3min 17 sec
Zero Master: "is that a challenge? I'll go below 3 minutes soon"
He is referencing all the hours practicing and searching for glitches.
3:24 Little did he know, Zero Master had by that point already removed himself from the board and re-entered, multiple times in fact.
8:15 But of course, Eidolon just witnessed a chess game in which his opponent spent much of the time clipping under the board and ultimately still won without even checkmating.
Oh hello there
HEEE!! NØ Minds...GAME..DOOM = STRATERGY 2...(lol)
"Greetings mortal. Are you ready to die?"
"See you in 5 minutes."
[Korax] "Nope, in five episodes."
"You have played this game too long mortal."
In a way yes, then again, maybe not.
The first time I played Hexen, it was on a PC that took 90 seconds or more to load new maps. It took me like 2 weeks to beat the game after giving up on the Cleric and starting over with the Fighter. This was wonderfully entertaining, thanks!
I never heard of anyone giving up on Cleric for Fighter late in the game. Their power levels are on reverse trajectories - the Fighter starts easy and gets harder while the Cleric starts harder and gets easy. Wraithverge is hilariously OP and the Serpent Staff health leech mode is gold.
@@BlazingOwnager I didn't say late in the game, lol.
@@azazelleblack LOL, yep that'll do it - the Cleric seems like absolute underpowered hell until you get the staff ;)
@@BlazingOwnager I actually think I had the staff, but, it looked dumb + I didn't know about the life steal function so it was not long after I got the staff that I abandoned that run, lol.
ZeroMaster has become too powerful. Now he's speedrunning other Doom-Engine games.
Maybe he can run Hedon, Ashes and the like soon, I'd like to see someone good at running doom engine games do those
Island of the dead next? 😂👏🏻
@Barry Soetorro like agent Smith!
He did this game for years there's vids from 5+ years ago of him running it
Most sane way to solve Hexen's hubs
Having ran Hexen and talked with you about this, I hope people realize how great this is! These types of skips aren’t easy - and to discover and implement them is awesome!
Congrats on the first ever sub 7, by a good bit!
The movement is so clean and the tricks nailed! All single segment skill 4 too!
Allstin, will you ever continue your Hexen "Nightmare" (with respawns) run?
Also, amazing Hexen run Zero Master! Congrats on the WR!
@@mcbain257 ahh that’s a classic!! Did it off video first years ago. No plans for that one currently but it’s definitely a tough one. Awesome you remember it 😃
Is clipping any easier in Hexen? Collision is the same, right? Man, being able to spawn friendly(ish) Things out of bounds must add some incredible possibilities though!
Zero Master running Hexen: A Fighter that can do Magic.
I love how instead of fighting korax you break into his home to steal his chaos sphere.
"With a scream of agony, you are wrenched from this world into another, every part of your body wreathed in mystic hall of mirrors."
I got in trouble with my teacher in the first grade because all my daily journal entries were about this game lol
Korax: "You have played this game too long, Mortal. I think I shall remove you from the board."
Zero-Master: *proceeds* *to* *remove* *himself* *from* *the* *board*
😁
Fantastic run. Using a waking gargoyle as an elevator was absolutely hilarious. As was the fact that no bosses except a bit of Korax were even spoiled.
Well, i've only played hexen the regular way, and it was barely feasible to me that way.
Seeing it being absolutely demolished in just a few mins like this is... can't even describe it.
They knew he would come, as he always had, as he always will, to feast on the blood of the wicked.
OMG I had been waiting for this for so long, thank you for doing Hexen again.
This was beautiful to watch. I just recently started playing through Hexen again after not playing it since the 90s. It took less than a minute to catch up with my hours of progress. LOL
In Zero Master's world, solid body physics are merely a suggestion.
Hexen is such a great game. The environment felt so good, especially for a modified Doom engine in the pre-Quake days.
Korax or w/e the evil guys name is: “Are you strong enough to face your own masters”
Runner: “nah that’s why ima glitch through all these walls and skip them entirely”
He meant the 3 generals
Dude!
Congratulations with your world record this is absolutely insane!
I love hexen so much I still play it a couple times a year along with Guantlet!
You are truly a genius loved this game as a kid and great to see you do some runs with it
I LOVE HEXEN. thank you for running this game zeromaster
So many out of bounds glitches! It's nutty.
This makes me excited at the potential of speedruns of Heretic and Blood.
This guy i swear. he's a literal God. Hats of to you as always Zero Master.
I was under the impression that void glides were one of the toughest tricks to pull off in Doom speedrunning, so I'm very surprised to see that you managed to go out of bounds, and then back in bounds four separate times in this run! What is it about Hexen's engine or mechanics that makes going out of bounds more feasible than in Doom?
The extra speed from the fighter is nice (he’s faster than doomguy), plus jumping adds momentum. Also jumping against pigs/corpses and stuff helps too
jumping on top of things and monsters or killing monsters next to walls can put you over 2 units into the wall, player size is 32x32 units and there is also a speed cap at 30 units per tic like in doom, but since you are over 2 units into the wall that's enough. As allstin mentioned the fighter has extra speed compared to doomguy allowing you to get closer to 30 units per tic by just strafe running, but to get there you need either damage boosts or, more easily, you can jump while on top of things and monsters (like pigs) to increase your speed to max.
@@ZeroMaster That's some Rain Man level knowledge of the game there. You're a legend bro.
This whole video is just a flex on civvie11.
holy fuck this run was nasty. Zero Master is the GOAT
Only Zero Master could casually demolish the existing record by almost 30 seconds and do it on the highest difficulty to boot.
The passage through the walls is a deception
being bored by the low difficulty of kiling demons in doom, Zero Master decides to look for new horizons, and finds a new playground in Hexen.
Korax: ARE YOU STRONG ENOUGH TO FA... wait... the heck are you... what the frick? He's floating through a goddamn wall! Eidolon, can he do that?
Dude I can't even finish the first level in 6 minutes & 46 seconds D:
tbh every speedrun ZeroMaster does nowadays is leaving me with "execuse me, what the heck?" face
Jumping on the mobs head was too funny
I don’t think I could be a speed runner, everything that hit me must die
No game is safe from Zero Master.
I've watched hexen speedruns before, is this how it went? some of this sh*t is crazy!
A lot of speedruns before now were more sub-20 than sub-10 I'm pretty sure. The speedrun for this game has evolved by leaps and bounds lately and I'm happy for it.
Damn, makes me realize all those years ago that I never beat this game.
Freaking sweet run!
Who needs arduous switch-hunts when you can just phase through walls instead?
For most time of the video i didn't even know what is happening, but enjoyable as hell :D
At 5:30 the pain grunts are in sync with the music
3:53 i love how you used the affrit as an elevator ;D
Dude,it's tradition to refuse to Korax's proposal to die at the beginning of Seven Portals. By not refusing you accept his power over you. The only thing that saved you from his wrath is your amazing super power to go through walls. But he is still out there! Menacing the world of Cronos and it's your fault! I have to weep now.
So no FPS is safe, Zero? Loving it. When will we see you crush some Duke Nukem Total Meltdown times? Or Borderlands? That’d be cool.
Good old Hexen.
Getting out of bounds in doom is really difficult - is it easier in hexen because of the increased run speed?
It's still tough though!
This speedrun is crazy!
3:36 - Wtf, that is insanely good luck. This is Zeromaster though, so I'm sure he planned this.
Genius! Loved it. Played it many a time (cleric)...just not as a speed run.
congrats on 60k btw bro
You, ARE, THE MASTER
Zero master doesn't just destroy a game...
He destroys the engine
daaamn....thats was fast) great work
This was great.
can you make heretic tas and hexen TAS? no one ever done it before, will be very entertaining
It would be insanely fast!
hexen tas already here
@@vilomaxus2463 where?)
I will probably do it, not sure when though.
I have tried to like Hexen. Every few years I give Hexen another go and stop in frustration. The level design is so cryptic and confusing. Glad to see the game can beat in under seven minutes!!!!
Incredible :D
Whoever owns the rights to this game needs to bring Hexen back just imagine doom eternal graphics but with Hexen dark fantasy theme weapons enemies all the items would be insane if done right
Hexen with all those portals is very confusing
I had no idea just how broken Hexen was in comparison to Doom. Almost the entire game is optional.
Are you strong enough...
to face your own Zero-Masters?
"matter is mostly empty space... in fact, let me show you"
Seeing you getting in the bounds again is something I only see on Hexen. Is the engine between Doom and Hexen so different?
We need a Hexen-decino!
My guess is the is something changed in the physics of Helen which allows it. No idea what it could be because I lack knowledge of the doom engine and its derivatives.
@@Aceshot-uu7yx i think the main culprit is just the fact that the fighter is faster than doom guy while having the exact same collision radius
there's certainly quite a few differences in physics between doom and hexen, but like when it comes to skipping walls because you're moving too fast for the collision detection to detect them ... well, moving ~20% faster just by pressing forward does a lot, and so does strafing at almost the same speed as moving forward when straferunning is a thing
yeah, the fighter ( and only the fighter, actually ) basically has auto-sr50. it's kinda nuts
@@hi-i-am-atan jumping adds momentum too, plus jumping and moving on pigs/corpses
It tooks me almost two decades to understand that this is probably the first FPS-game with a hub and sublevels with backtracking to solve the puzzles and to continue the story. I was thinking it was like Heretic and Doom.
Yeah but that's what kills the fun sometimes, I had to download wads to feel that same experience. Looking back at it now one had to spend hours of their day to progress in the game.
Sooooooooo much effort... for NO PRICE!!! This is priceless
PLEASE tell me Hexen is about to be a regular game on this channel
Wrexen
That ...... wasn't quite how I remember it LMAO. Sick bro.
Господи, как же это было офигенно!
Hexen - basically a medival/magic version of Doom. Loving it!
Nah, that'd be Heretic. Hexen is Heretic but is basically a detective game instead of an FPS game with the large amount of switches you have to guess the location of.
The best and fastest speedrun of Hexen i have seen
I’m gonna watch this!!
hey allstin I didn't know you visit zero master too
@@nobodytakesmypizza for sure! 😃
@@Allstin I actually discovered doom from this channel
This is insane...
God damn... Zero- Master of the Doom Engine
Damn, this guy just smashed this hexen like hell.
The longer Zero Master plays FPS's, the stronger he becomes...gg wp
25+ yrs later I still cant beat the 7 portals
This is crazy!
I thought this was a speed run of the first area of the game.
Nope!
Full game speed run in 6min!
Zero Master is speed
insane :)
5:23 - I don't remember this room in my playthrough. OOB-only area?
Just outside the 2nd Heresiarch boss fight, out of bounds of it
Insane.
this game was so cool when it came out. Well I guess a lot of the original games were. So many of them became legendary (Deus Ex, Diablo, Starcraft, or course Doom), I'm happy I had a chance to play them when they were the latest and greatest. Now a lot of games are sort of hollywood-ized and made with mass market appeal, which is different from how it used to be. But that's okay there are still tons of indie studios innovating, so games are as great as they've ever been :)
I blinked and suddenly I was looking at a chessboard.
3:52 - hehehe!!!!
God I used to get stuck on some of these levels for hours!
The shit talking at 3:20 only served to anger Zero Master.
Master is clearly a well earned title.
Damn that was fast
First hub sub 45 sec, I'm convinced Zero Master is a robot
3:20 it suddenly got meta
Топовая игра
Not even sure what I just witnessed
What comp-level are you using?
"I am inside your walls"
