The first audition is amazing as well. Not just for the singing, but she really does a fun, warm personality. The judges were ready to say yes before she even sang!!

Great breakdown, as always! I haven’t been taken by a new voice like Sydnie’s in a very long time. I believe it’s her emotional connection as well as her vocal chops connected with her personality (watch her audition piece-Tomorrow) that I connect with. I was blown away by her. But thank you, because now I know WHY she was so different and likable to me. (And of course every voice connects with people in such unique ways). And like her, you’re very humble and grounded as you explain technique. 💜

Hi Jen. Great analysis. Sydnie is from Kent originally, and has had minor roles in a few plays and on cruise ship shows.
This arrangement was made by Loren Allred (Never Enough) in a performance by Loren 4 months ago when she was on AGT Fantasy League. Since she had only 3 days between the semifinal and the finals, BGT suggested she sing Loren’s version. Sydnie initially said no because Loren is her idol, but Loren not only approved it but also sent Sydnie a video of support.
And after Sydnie won, she said her dream is to collaborate with Loren. Loren responded by offering to do a duet with her.
Loren recently posted that she will be in London in early July to perform with Andrea Bocelli, so maybe they’ll get together during that time?

If you watch the interview on the tv show. Sydnie says she uses Lorens version but the singing coach changed it enough to make it a bit different from LorenS version from AGT fantasy league. Loren also told her to do it and not worry. Both versions are amazing.loren is her idol as well

You should really react to Lauren Allred’s rendition of this song. Sydnie said that Lauren was a huge inspiration for her! Lauren took inspiration from the never enough backing music and you can hear similarities in the over the rainbow instrumentation to the never enough instrumentation

This video glitches out every time it is played, I believe it is intentional, but it is still perfection by Sydnie great reaction Jennifer.
Please react to her other two performances. In my opinion, I think they're even better. This was still really good though, just don't think it was quite as good as her performances of Tomorrow and My Way.
Since you are a msical theater performer, Sydnie is your cup of mead. She aspires to be a West Ender one day. While she is currently using otner folks arrangements, (this one is haavily reliant on Loren Allred's version) she adds her own ruffles and flourishes, and I look forward to seeing what this win means for her futrure. Also have to give props for great arrangement selection and tremendous execution.

LOL This was the finals...BGT picked this song and she had 3 days to learn it...her audition (golden buzzer song Tomorrow) and her semi-final song was a stunner (My Way)....she is all about the West End! YES she did win BGT 2024. Has a degree in vocal performance and has performed with a German touring company and done cruise ships. She is very well trained, just never got that big break everyone strives for....why drive me nuts🥰 you always do the last one, not following the progression. Love your comments anyway...
those pauses are obviously in the original video itself, as I heard them separately on YT as I assume everybody else did. I suspect the GBT producers did this intentionally to preserve the original recording's marketability, or at least control over it for whatever "proprietary" purposes.
Please do My Way and Tomorrow. You'll be amazed. And now you know why she won

She sang it brilliantly, great, extraordinary and I love listening to her BUT, didn't anyone notice that she followed Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole's interpretation very closely or used exactly his stylistic devices? That's pretty clever, his "over the rainbow" went viral for a reason.

Sydnie doesn't really need reaction videos. It's like a bunch of regular car mechanics analyzing the highest level racing car. Knock yourself out but you're not adding anything to the engine.
Of her three performances I believe this was here worst one. You should have started with her audition and decided if you wanted to review any more of her performances.
The audio issues are in the original video... it was not you. Their quality was horrible.

Pretty dreadful. She's taken Eva Cassidy's version - which some weird unnatural phrasing - and decided to throw in some more unnatural, and definitely unnecessary sudden - and yes I would call them staccato - breaks. This gimmicky performance is a million miles away ftom from those wonderful women singers of a time gone by. For example, Ella, Sarah and Dinah. Heaven only knows what those great vocalists would make of this performance with its bizarre phrasing which sounds dreadfully forced and unnatural.

The problem with vocal coaches is that they prefer to hear their own voices rather than the performers.
I hope you listened to the full audience reaction to this song after she finished singing.. I have never heard an audience reaction to a performance on a talent show like it before. It was amazing.

I hope you'll listen to her performance of "My Way". I think it was clearly her best performance. Simon said "It was not a 10/10 performance, it was an eleven", for what that's worth.
It really is amazing though. I'm pretty sure she hits her highest belted notes in that one too.
It is so great how Sydnie makes each one of these performances not only hers but also fits jer struggle with the many rejections she has gotten trying to get on the West End in a meaningful role! In this one she is pointing at the role over the rainbow she wants so badly! In Tomorrow she changed only s day away to always a day away, and it was stick out your chin and hope for a better role tomorrow! I My Way she changed the sex to female and she took all the rejections in and spat them out and did it her way! Brilliant! Then her great voice delivered her message with clarity! Such an amazing talent, and now a Quarter of a Million Pounds richer, a gig performing before the Royals, and offers streaming in from the West End and other things! Lets ave It Syd!

“Somewhere over the rainbow” - Who sang it better Sydnie Christmas or Loren Allred?
First, they have both given stunning, beautiful performances of an extremely familiar song. They both did a tremendous job and preferences are very subjective.
Loren Allred
On AGT’s Fantasy League, Loren sang a near flawless cover of “Somewhere.” However, her history on talent shows was much was different from Sydnie’s. Loren was already an extremely accomplished professional singer who announced to the 2022 BGT judges and audience during her audition there that she was the actual voice of “Never Enough.” Therefore, the BGT judges (including Simon) appeared gob smacked that she was now going to perform “Never Enough” for the judges and come out of the shadows. Allred presented herself, elegantly dressed, but as somewhat fragile and uncertain about stepping into the limelight.
Sydnie Christmas
In contrast, for her first audition on 2024 BGT, Sydnie sort of bounces onto the stage. Her personality is already infectious. She engages with the judges and audience, but her off-the street clothing and self-deprecating humor did not signal a successful audition. In fact, considering the tremendous expectation Simon Cowell and the BGT judges had for hearing Allred sing “one of the biggest songs of all time” (“Never Enough”), the context for Loren’s audition was completely different from that faced by Sydnie. Yes, it was later revealed that Sydnie had previous experience singing musical gigs, but Sydnie completely lowered expectations by announcing she was going to sing a song she hadn’t sung since she was four years old. Ha! And then to announce that she was going to sing “Tomorrow,” from Annie, only to have Simon hold his head, roll his eyes, and be told that it was Simon’s least favorite song. You’re 28 years old and have just been told that the chief judge absolutely hates your song choice before you’ve even started. Well, no pressure there.
Buuuuuut. Although BGT never tells us who arranged this version of “Tomorrow,” and seems to pretend that they had never heard this version before, in fact, Marisha Wallace (search UA-cam) performed this song this way as far back as 2020. Obviously, this was NOT the version of “Tomorrow” Sydnie sang as a four-year old! This was a carefully crafted performance of Wallace’s arrangement and performance with a bit of jazzy-blues insertions and bended flats you would never hear from a four-year old (or a 10-year-old Annie). Another curious thing about this BGT presentation is the way BGT cut and presented Sydnie’s golden buzzer performance. After her rendition, and as part of Sydnie’s golden buzzer moment, “Somewhere over the rainbow” played out, with dramatic swells and diminishments all the way to Sydnie exiting to greet her family to the final words of “why, oh, why, can’t I?” Apparently, these were cut in from Loren Allred’s performance on AGT. BGT took a lot of care and thought into post-editing Sydnie’s audition and golden buzzer performance. Again, as has been revealed, Sydnie Christmas did not just walk out on the BGT stage and dredge up by memory a song (“Tomorrow”) she had last sung when she was four years old. Someone else noted, that she actually presented herself and dressed like an adult “Annie.” And after the accolades and golden buzzer confetti, as she walks off the stage she sticks her right hand in her pants pocket. Now who does that? Calculated? You tell me. Perhaps it was an extremely effective way of lowering expectations and going back to an oh, shucks, persona.
“Somewhere over the rainbow”
As has been noted, both Sydnie and Loren sang the same song, same version, in the same key. Who sang it better? A few observations.
Loren’s version was perhaps more technically pure. For music critics this is sometimes the music measurement: How close does a singer get to the standard (or altered standard)? Loren’s version is bright and precise.
Sydnie, who clearly put her own stamp on “Tomorrow” and “My Way”, sang a “Somewhere” version that was a bit more raw, a few more bends and tweaks used. A few pre-BGT videos of Sydnie’s singings have popped up. While good, they do not foreshadow the control or incredible belting capability of her voice, especially in the BGT final. During her time on BGT, Sydnie disclosed that she worked hard with a BGT vocal coach. Especially after choosing to do Loren’s version of “Somewhere” for the final with three days preparation. All to say, that Loren already had years of exquisite singing under her “belt” (pun intended), but seemingly lacked confidence to go solo. Sydnie, at 28, had some catching up to do and apparently was successful enough that she announced that she would use at least some of her BGT winnings to continue paying the BGT vocal coach. In other words, Loren already had the chops to effortlessly deliver “Somewhere,” while Sydnie had to work to get there.
A couple of other subjective things. Sydnie has a great lower range. You could hear that immediately when at her BGT audition she was asked if being a front at a gym was what she wanted to do, she laughed and then gave this low lyrical “Nooooo.” She went with a few low lyrical swells in “Tomorrow” as well. While both singers have incredible high ranges, Sydnie’s lower range was very impressive. Loren’s diction was impeccable. Perhaps due to nerves, Sydnie’s diction occasionally became a bit mudded.
And both singers could take in enormous breaths of air, without being obvious about it. When watching a Stevie Nicks video, Nicks will stand at the mic with her legs very far apart as if she needs her legs to help her do her belting. Loren and Syndie both are able to stand straight in front of the mic with their feet together pointing straight ahead. Loren has a bit more leg separation, but it is amazing that Sydnie, in particular, can ground herself on stage so effortlessly with all that belting coming from her core with her feet so close together.
Finally, it would have been nice to have given Israel Kamakawiwo'ole credit for writing and singing this version of “Somewhere.”
