How did I come up with the story?
Early 1950s, Wooden House in 10, Silibin Road, Ipoh
As my Great Grandma was bathing me at the back open court yard of the house, she would tell me all kinds of stories. The stories that were stuck in my brain and cannot be erased from my memory even after seven decades related to the Japanese occupation in Malaya. The horror was the rounding up of young men into fields and chopping off of their heads. Their heads would then be put on poles and placed along road sides.
When the Japanese forces started to invade Malaya, my parents fled by train to Singapore. My Papa wanted my Mama to cut her hair short as to avoid being maligned by the Japanese invaders. She refused! During those days, I think she was dressed in sam-fu. When Singapore was bombed by the Japanese forces, they hurriedly returned back to Malaya. Their fear was unspeakable!
This music and story depict the horror, deprivation and sadness of this episode.
