80bhp, and 140mph ( 60kw and 225kph!!!) In 1929, thats as terrifying as it is amazing
Actually, the 1929 compressor BMW had 55 bhp. In 1936 the motor was substantially overhauled, and, with the compressor now on the front of the engine, pushed out 68 bhp. So there never was 80 bhp! In 1938 BMW became European champions with this BMW, in 1939 Schorsch Meier won the TT of Man, but the championship that year went to Gilera.
I'll believe you@@joepkortekaas8813, but I'll leave it to you to tell Troy ;-)
@@JakobusVdL Somebody once said: "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics!" In my book "Honda's Four-Stroke Race History 1954 ~ 1981", I said: "There are lies, damn lies, and originality claims". To that I should add: "There are lies, damn lies, and horsepower figures!"
@@joepkortekaas8813 If it didn't have 80bhp back in the day, do you think it might have been 'developed' to that kind of output in its current form?
Surely if it 'only' makes 55 or 68bhp (still pretty pokey for 1930's motors), even a Troy Corser would be quoting those kinds of numbers, so we'd credit it's pace to the skill of the rider rather than the grunt of its engine.
@@JakobusVdL Well, i don't believe for a second it could have 80 bhp, for even the 1938 BMW with a better compressor, and higher boost pressure, had only 68 bhp. But they changed some things on this 1929 BMW: e.g. it has now double ignition, which it didn't have in '29, and that would give a power boost of approx. 3%, i.e. some 1.5 bhp. When you look at the straight line speed difference with the Manx Nortons, which have some 50 bhp, then you can see that the power of the BMW can nowhere be in the vicinity of 80 bhp, but some 56 ~ 57 bhp is quite believable. By the way, the footrests are also modern - they used to be rubber. It also now has megaphones, which have no meaning on a compressor bike, but gives a much more impressive sound!
His ride on that bike was bloody heroic .
rigid bike...sponsored by OHLINS :)
Troy could race a wheel barrow fast.
Plenty of talent in the old dog still
That bike was originally owned & raced by a friend of mine’s father. He was a BMW dealer in Geelong
Being a Beemer fan and a Gtown boy that's very interesting Mark!!, Would love to hear more details.
Man, i've seen this guy riding this bike in a lot of youtube videos but never got the idea of looking who he was, finding out he is almost 50 years old and not 30ish (as i imagined him to be) is shocking, i know i know nobody cares but i wanted to share my bewilderment
I care man, I can't believe he's 50 he trully knows how to live, that's the kind of life I want, its proof that age is just a number(I don't mean that in the wrong way, obviously)
Respect for both Corser and the blown Beamer!!
In 1989 I became the second owner of a 1974 BMW r90s. I bought it on a dare from the salesman, a friend who sold it to the original owner .. I had it for 15 years. I wish I never parted ways with it. This video of Tony piloting an unsuspended BMW nearly 40 years older than mine is remarkable.
Who was actually hoping to see the bike? I sure was!
Yes me too. Some close-ups of the mechanicals would've been nice, the thing looks like it is out of a Mad Max movie XD
Notice that it is a push-rod engine, not OHC. Later on, BMW developed the RennSport which was ohc but not supercharged. Fabulous engines, all of them. I once owned a 250cc R 26 which was a splendid and reliable machine, would appreciate it again these days as well.
He's such a cool guy! … and fast as hell on that beast :-D
Troy is a legend and the way he rides this bike is incredible.
1928!!That is freaking amazing!! BMW is my favorite Motorcycle. This bike is my 1st dream bike. 2nd Rennsport 500.3rd /7 krauser by Perry Bushong. RIP!
Bloody nuts
Steel balls
80hp, 140mph. Now imagine that on pre war racetracks wich was not perfectly smooth tarmac....
A bit unstable in corners.
Well, it's bouncing like a kangaroo because it has no suspension.
Not a surprise that an Australian is riding that supercharged boxing bike.
Not much information on how the bike was developed.
What do expect in three or four minutes? Do some research yourself!
mctavish199 ...I’d expect A Guide to Troy Corser’s 89 Year Old BMW to be, well, a guide to Troy Corser’s 89 year old BMW you pratt!
I'd like to see him beating a few of drivers of modern racebikes on the Ring. I guess they would instantly set their stuff on fire and quit motorcycleing forever.
Who owns this bike now? Whare is it?
This bike is a monster on track...troy Dominated every race well done!👏👏
Awesome content that has been produced at Goodwood. Having the legend troy corser there sure does help :)
I Watched These videos About corser and The old bmw, but i have one question: Howe Does the clutch Work? He use his left Hand for shifting
I saw the other video of him racing this bike at Goodwood. An impressive display of riding skill. Especially so since it appears he didn’t spend much time on the bike before he developed what I assume to be a unique shifting style. I don’t know vintage bikes, much less vintage racing bikes which might have been different from their street brethren, so I’m asking for some help. He mentions his preference for shifting with his left hand because he wants to be able to brake and shift as he enters a corner, and also to be able to quickly accelerate. Makes sense. This implies that the brake lever is on the right as is the case with modern bikes. It also makes sense that this was designed for right-handed shifting as then the rider could squeeze the clutch lever with his left hand. So how then is Corser shifting with his left hand? I assume he’s not clutching? Can motorcycles do this without damaging the tranny? Or maybe racing motorcycles are designed for clutchless shifting? Or is he matching revs as they used to do with non-synchro trannies back in the day?
Really good riding Troy good to watch then changing GEARS WELL WHAT CAN I SAY 😃
Troy is a killer of vintage BMW`s. Fortunatelly they are from 80% replications.
In a similar vein there's a very nice 30's Rudge racing in GB against 60's Ducatis in 250 class which more than holds its own.
@ Goodwood could show more AJS, Matchlles, Norton bikes in detail ...
DAS IS SO N SCHWEINEGEILES GERÄT! 90! JAHRE! ALT und rennt wia obrennt🤘👍👍👍
Hell yeah!
that thing ain't slow
Super Race
A genuine bona-fide, all~day, every~ day Warrior. He is everything a Bike racer should be and then some, a Dude. And as nice as you
would like him to be. A Jewel really..
Happy days.. the best.
DON'T NEED THE IRRITATING REPETITIVE MUZAK. THUMBS DOWN
FUCKING LEGEND !!
in how many delinquent and gang mangas have I seen this model - way to much , well it a pretty cool motorbike , we need to make a world motorbike cup with just this model race :D
1987 EX 500 136mph .Love twins,opposed or split.
I wonder if the Gear Ratios are Altered, It's Not So Easy to Change on a Shaft Driven Bike, No Simple Sprocket Change, it Needs a New Differential - I can't Imagine a 1920's Bike Geared to Run 120mph, I Suspect there's Alot of Aftermarket or Unique 'Unobtainium' bits on that Old Bike, Look @ the 'Egli Vincent' for Example, it's Designed as 1/4 of V8 Touring Car Engine Specification, Bore & Stroke ect, but Looks like an Old Vincent Engine, it Produces 150+HP - Awesome Engineering - Dont get me Wrong!! But Not Really an Authentic Classic Period Bike, it's a 'CNC' Special😆👍🇦🇺🍻
I did wonder. It looks the part though and there can't be many hidden improvements to the tiny brakes. Probably cable operated.
Respect!
This has to be the Most beautiful Bike i've ever Seen! What a piece of Art that is!
Awesome
Deutsche Qualitätsarbeit 🇩🇪💪🏼👍👍👍🏁🏁🏁
BEAST
A legendary rider on legendary bike.
Lovely bike & wouldn't it be wonderful to also see in action what I consider the most beautiful motorcycle ever made, the 1939 blown 4 cylinder 250 Benelli...
@@droceretik Have you ever given a positive answer, an answer that told people something to their advantage, instead of just showing yourself as an impossible jerk?
Mbah Troy corser masih buas juga naik motornya..😄😄😄
Absolutely, old chap!
Fitted with modern steering damper and tyres eh? I guess they have to allow changes for safety, it reallly goes well, Troy is a great rider. You would think they would have the gear change on the left side?
Why? Why is it on the right? Any other observations/complaints?
Because the clutch is on the left
David Allison That would make sense except that Troy is using his left hand to make the gear change anyway....so he doesnt use the clutch except when starting off...
@@truthseeker8483 It still makes sense - it is just Troy is doing things differently, and a close-ratio gearbox often allows you to make gear changes without using the clutch. I'm afraid droceretic will call me a dead shit again because I happen to know this - from my own experience.
The video explains that it is set up for the owner who likes the left side change. Mr Corser had had to improvise. Clearly not too much of an issue for him. And it's got enough grunt so only top two gears needed for a lap. There aren't any slow corners at Goodwood.
Heroic.. Homeric. What a hero.
WF
Much Respect Tony.😊
Insane!!! And Awesome!
haha awesome wha t a hero...!!
that man is a legend
Top corser
AWESOME STUFF
awkward shifitng bike by the looks of it
I thought it had F1 style pneumatic/magnetic shifting.
@@droceretik Again, a very useful reply! You are really so helpful! Talking about dead shits....
GRANDIOS, Troy!
Amazing ! BMW beating everyone back to front with hard tail and that awkward shifter. Imagine what could they do to rivals from Yamaha, Honda & Ducati if they would have access to technology like counter crank, electronic engine management or seamless shifter.
What? The Japanese have been kicking BMWs butt in WSBK. Honda and Ducati are dominating Moto GP . BMW are welcome to enter. BMW go racing for 1 or 2 seasons then they withdraw when they realise how much money racing costs
Simplistic claptrap. Go to BMW and ask them about their racing policy and program.
@@droceretik If you apparently know so well, why don't YOU tell us BMW's racing program, instead of constantly abusing people (which, by the way, is typical of self appointed "experts").
👏👏👏👏👏
Lovely bike! :-)
😎🤗
Those megaphones on this bike are just for show - a supercharged engine doesn't need them! The original BMW didn't have them.
The original have also megaphones, they had some with and without in the past
@@herbertschwab7198 The originals certainly NEVER had megaphones - in 1929 not one motorcycle in the world had megaphones, they first appeared in the 1930s, and BMW have never used real megaphones, even the RSs of the 1950s had megaphones which were so narrow that they behaved like straight pipes. The compressor BMWs on which Schorsch Meier and Walter Zeller raced shortly after the war also never had megaphones, you only have to look at the various pictures of the period. Compressor engines don't need megaphones, they're only unnecessary weight, because a compressor engine doesn't make use of pulsation and inertia phenomena like atmospheric aspirated engines. So, please show me one contemporary picture of a 1929 compressor BMW with those kinds of megaphones!
@@joepkortekaas8813 Ernst Jakob Henne use also megaphones . Write in google pictures "Jakob Henne Kompressor".
And the supercharged BMW record bike from 1937 use megaphones.
@@herbertschwab7198 As I already said, those are NOT megaphones, they are much to slender and react like straight pipes! And it is quite clear, that the megaphones on the 1929 BMW are much, much wider, they are real megaphones. And any mechanical engineer, who studied internal combustion engines (which I for one happen to be) can tell you, like I said, that megaphones are of no use on a compressor engine. And herewith I end the discussion.
@Joep Kortekaas no reason to be unfriendly! Thats not what i am talking about, and i know about engines and exaust, i never said it make sence to use them . But maybe i change them for you
Yeh, lets see the Vincent Black Shadow Supercharged for a bit of fair racing.
Right, they're the same capacity and same era? The black shadow competive in 500 cc racing?
@@droceretik not on this day.
@Playing around: It would be lovely to see a supercharged Vincent, like George Browns "Nero" in action - but alas, those bikes are now so valuable, that nobody would race them. More's the pity!
I am surprised there are not more supercharged bikes out there they were banned in 1946 to try and limit speed and cost but if there are no such restrictions on these races an early supercharged bike will always have a distinct power advantage I would love to see a Gilera Rondine out there and an AJS.
And a Velocette "Roarer"...
The Rondine (by then known as Gilera) beat the BMWs - they were European champs in 1939. The AJS wouldn't stand a chance, their roadholding was atrocious. The Velocette Roarer - that's another story.
Are you familiar with commas and periods?
@mctavish199 If you are addressing your comment to a particular poster then it is customary to put an identifier at the beginning like I have done but I will assume it was meant for me Lol, if you are so easily triggered by punctuation in UA-cam comments I suggest you stop reading them because you will find every punctuation, grammar and spelling mistake known to man.
@@droceretik I did write a book: "Honda's Four-Stroke History 1954 ~ 1981", published in 2010, and I've written "The 50 cc Race History", to be published yet, and I am a writer for the Dutch Magazine for classic bikes, "Het MotorRijwiel". Some time ago I wrote the Gilera race history, which of course included the Rondine, even with two original pictures of that bike after it was bought by Gilera in the 1930s.
Pobre moto
Maybe if you come back next year we can look at the bloody bike
Pay your own bloody money and go to Goodwood. Stop expecting other's to pay for your entertainment and viewing pleasure. They don't owe you anything.
@@droceretik Always the friendly and encouraging guy, aren't you. If you have nothing positive to say, why don't you keep your trap shut!
Decided to look this guy up after remembering something from my childhood. As a kid in the early 90's, I used to visit family in California over the summers. We used to always go to Santa Cruz boardwalk. One of our trips there, my uncle told me his friend is joining us along with his pro moto racer friend Troy Corser (and his wife/girlfriend?). Apparently he was in town for a race. I was all stoked to meet the guy (I was probably like 10) - and he was a total snob haha. Like he couldn't be bothered with any of us. We just went around all day - riding rides, playing games, eating food. And he was just there not saying a word, carrying on as if he was not even there with a few family members who invited him to join us. I don't even think I saw his eyes, because he never took his sunglasses off the whole time haha. I remember watching the race on tv a couple of days later (Laguna Seca, I believe) - and kind of wanted him to win, but also kind of wanted him to lose for being stuck up haha. If I remember right - get got 1st or 2nd. Funny shit. It's cool that he's still riding.
