fun fact: The T-90 was designated the T-72BU in the USSR. But when it fell and became the The Russian Federation they changed the name of the tank to T-90. Likely to distance it from its old Soviet ancestors.
But in all actuality it was the latest T-72 Model. ANNND then the T-72B3 came about and that whole convention went out the window
Also because the t72s performed so terribly in the gulf war it looked terrible for the export market. Renamed to T90 to try and claim it's a "new tank"

When talking about armour in War Thunder vs in real life, there are many reasons to why ERA and armour (you say Russian specifically, but this applies generally) is more effective in the game:
1. Most tank kills in Ukraine are to artillery from what I have seen. All tanks have poor roof armour and no ammounts of ERA can stop 152/155mm artillery rounds explosive power.
2. The battles in War Thunder are linear and without infantry. In real battles, especially in cities, there is always the possibility of a hidden infantry anti-tank squad hitting your rear, side, or roof from a hidden position. Real battles between similarly strong sides are much more chaotic than in war thunder.
3. Basically expanding on point 2, but the very nature of WT battles are unrealistic and tank-on-tank engagements are more rare than one usually thinks. Most destroyed Russian or Ukrainian tanks are not destroyed by other tanks, and there are videos of tanks on both sides surviving hits from other tanks.
4. Tank, and other equipment losses are mostly recorded during offensives, with Russias huge-scale initial feb 2022 offensive taking the price. Ukraine prooved that offensive action is hugely costly for them as well during their 2023 spring/summer/autumn offensive.
5. In War Thunder, you spawn with full combat readyness, and if you take damage you usually quickly loose your tank and respawn in a fresh one, or survive to the next battle in which your tank is perfectly repaired, while in reality, a detracked tank is a huge problem, and many tanks go without maintenance for a good time, having lost maybe ERA plates and have had its armour hit multiple times.
6. In WT we have a decent enough understanding of spots to hide, as well as knowledge of where exactly opponents move out from in the beginning of a match. And the maps are small, and for example if you are on the far right edge of the map, you *know* that you can not be shot from your right (ie another tank cant shoot you from outside the map), so keeping your strongest armoured part (usually front) towards the enemy is much easier.

War Thunder's problem with balance is a lot of the stuff we want to the add/change is classified. The Abrams will never get DU inserts because their effectiveness is "classified". I believe the russian ERA values are overstated as well you wouldn't want to go around saying what the real stats are. To talk about the Abrams specifically, SEP v2s and onwards have additional armor on the hull, specifically the lower glacis. Gaijin also messed up the US ERA without really citing a good source for changing it on the SEP in game. There is bias towards russian vehicles in game, but what can really be done to fix it if the NATO counters are still classified?
They didn’t add DU because it’d make Russia (and everyone else) have to aim for weakspots on the abrams, they can guesstimate like Janes, but they haven’t, them refusing to do the 50mm Chobham plate is just avg gaijin stupidity, probably need a signed letter from the president to get them to consider your sources, even if they’re directly from the US 🤣
I do think there is bias towards Russian vehicles (no spall on the ammo basket), however some of it is that all the flaws of Russian vehicles aren't modelled into the game because it would be bad game design. Having your gun jam constantly, not being able to see through your sights well, having half the area blacked out unless your get your commander out of the hatch and having lowered crew quality because of the lack of comfort would all make it less fun, however without that you're just left with the hard factors which all look good. Also armour quality.

@connor22abrams4 "there is bias towards Russian vehicles in game" in fact, in the actual Ukraine war, the best tank that has been well performances during the war has been t-70s,t80s and t90s, with none t14 destroyed so far. So it is not about a fake bias it is about actual fact. western tanks sucks...
@@cookiecraze1310 either you are a real bad player or either war thunder makes their tanks more accurate to the reality which it can be bad yet. for example in call of duty the best weapon in the game has been western weapon when in reality ak always dominate in almost any modern conflict during XXI century. but if the developers want their game to be far realistic in Ukraine war the best tank that have the best performance in the battlefield have been T series

All these whiners complaining about "Russian Bias" need to remember this is a, 1. A video game, 2. The era of the Phantom Kings, 3. The 20% armor debuff to german tanks, and 4. The ethnic russian players whine about NATO bias all the time. There is no bias, there is no devious intentions, you are just trying to improve your gameplay experience by forcing your opponents to have weaker tanks. It will backfire because id gaijin does nerf the "Biased" russian mbts, they will be downtiered and fighting tanks that cant even pen their base composite armor. Its a cricular issue and myth that this toxic community perpetuates.
WT banned me from comments when I pointed out that you can look at ppls player cards and see that the kd is usually twice as good on Russian tanks. You can see it with your own eyes. Look at tanks like the bmp. People with both the Russian and German bmps will have way higher kd on the Russian.

I play every nation, my rus bmp has double the kd and more importantly, double the win rate.

My T90 and T72A are my favorite tanks, tbh. T90 is capable of stopping ALL Sabo, and combat ranges in the turret is highly understated. The 3BM60 Is strong for 10.7 and including bring the 26S with works wonders

The gun depression is blatantly wrong for the T90A...its supposed to be -6 degrees but I guess Gaijin wanted to nerf it?
It is, technically, -6 degrees. The gun can depress only 5 degrees, but it's positioned in a way that it is already depressed -1 degree by default

Still don't understand why so many players don't like the T-90? Yes its armor is not the best and yes there are better guns on the BR. But I love its mobility and the turret armor. I still really enjoy driving it!

It is, big time. In Syria and now in Ukraine. I only did it because of the topic of the video. But yeah, the T-90 is still a great tank in its own right.
russian tanks are decent in tank to tank engagements, but their performance has a negative stigma because of top attack ATGMs absolutely destroying them in Ukraine. In war thunder there are VERY few vehicles with top attack ATGMs.
Plus basically any tank that doesn’t have active protects/trophy system will bet blown up by those missiles as seen in Ukraine with the leopards, so if they add more things with top attack atgms it could fix Russia being “overpowered”
All tanks currently in service have very little protection on their roof. Even the lastest M1 Abrams have only relatively thin steel plates on the vehicle top. What combat in Ukraine has shown is that active protection systems are necessary and that not being hit is the best type of protection. This has always been true, but people that aren't part of the military don't understand this and now it's clear to everybody.
I can’t get the hellfires on the nato drones to kill any T-72/T80/T90 with ERA, despite the top attack. It’s still probably just my imprecise aim because I usually get the kill with the yah 64
Russian tanks are made fun of because they are utilized so terribly. Driving alone with no infantry support. Which makes it prime pickings to enemy infantry.
No T-64 was dumped after T-72b came out because T-64’s were extremely unreliable, so no it wasn’t meant to be a mainline tank. T-72 is a way more superior platform because of the better autoloader and ease of maintenance, there is a reason russia dumped the T-64 years ago
Russian ERA is 100% over performing. ERA that was designed to defeat HEAT based rounds, is being destroyed by heat missiles/rockets IRL. But magically that same ERA can eat whole darts in the game.
Kontakt, relict etc were meant to deform apfsds. But it absolutely is over performing and doesn't just stop it in it's place.

The fact that EXPLOSIVE reactive armor eats sabots for dinner in this game, especially on tanks from a certain faction is crazy. Having to fight them every match pisses me off I wish I could have them on my team more often😂 but gaijan refuses to queue russia and us together unless they are on both sides…
Except that ERA is literally designed as extra armor against sabot rounds. This is a whole thing in real life with Russian tanks making new ERA to counter current NATO sabot shells, then nations like the US making new versions of their current shells (look at M829A1/2/3/etc), and the cycle begins a new. It’s just that at this stage in the game, with Russia having Relikt era, the US’ M829A2 shell is less effective, just as in real life. Once the A3 version, which was literally designed to counter Relikt, is introduced, it’ll be a different story.

Yes, ERA in WT is broken. Can easily stop a 400mm pen kinectic round with 0 touch on the actual armor just ERA modules which is in fact NOT POSSIBLE.
I have honestly never seen that. Sometimes it kinda looks that way if you hit the strongest part of the armor, like upper front plate or turret. You destroy the ERA but the armor stops it anyways.
Soviets need the handholding, when you combine the op ERA, trolly armor and OP ammo they get at lower brs (they get better ammo than the abrams at 10.3, at 9.7) if NATO/USA in game got buffed up to reality, the Soviets would suck like IRL

The thing that gets me about the Relict ERA is that all we have is what Russia says, and it is in just about any country’s best interest to overstate their military capabilities, at least with the doctrine of deterrence. The problem with what Russia says is that few Westerners will believe it, as Russia seems very prone to lying, from our perspective. The Western countries aren’t very helpful about explaining their tanks’ capabilities, as they prefer to just keep secrets; at least they can’t possibly lie if they don’t disclose anything to begin with.
We can have a pretty good guesstimate about Relict performance though. The concept of ERA is not a new one and the difference between say Kontakt-5, which is well known and studied, and Relikt is greater explosion and harder + bigger plates that have more space to move in any direction.
The problem in War Thunder is that they give ERA an RHA equivalence, when ERA in reality has a % degrading effect. A weak HEAT-FS round with...100mm penetration will not be "stopped" by an ERA piece.
Serious question. Why do people hit enemy with machine gun fire before shooting the main cannon? In most of my gameplay I didn’t want to tip them off to my presence before lining up a shot, and the machine gun isn’t gonna penetrate most of them…
it lights them up on the map so that your team can shoot at them too.
Also if you get the drop on them and you know they can't do anything you can shoot them with mg first as a taunt, kind of a dick move but a lot of people do it.

Its a T72 with better frontal & turret armor, sure it has 3BM60 but at 10.7 it gets uptiered mostly into 11.7 where it gets squished by almost every other tank frontally, same goes for the T72 3B, yes they have a good gun & ammo but every other aspect is not competitive at everything above 11.0, especially the reverse speed that gets me killed more often than cas, especially after playing something nimble & sophisticated like the Leo 2A6😂
t62-t72-t90 is regular engines , while t64-t74 is t80 predessesor and t80 is turbine engine. but the t90 is actually a better tank compared to the previous.

I've noticed in my failed research that all the tanks armor in game is less then stated thickness in RL. That also goes for the ammunition used. All in such a way to make certain vehicles; I.E. plains, helicopters, tanks, and ships, are better then they are. That ammunition is better or worse then its been seen to be, not only just for pride of vehicles liked/loved then they really are.. Written to make as much sense as explanations given by the countries that are overestimated at this current moment.. Cense there combat doctrine is based on quantity of fighters (Like Korean war) which would favor the massed armour then this brawling style which show they totally fail at.. 😁😁😁
Although it is an evolution of the T-72 tank, the T-90A has a new welded turret that is a lot more boxy and somewhat longer than the previous T-72 models. The newer T-90M and MS are even more different. As for ERA, Kontakt-5 and newer types of ERA reduce the penetration of APFSDS by deviating their trajectories which reduces penetration significantly. However, the round will still impact the armor and will probably dig in it to a level. The armor will be weakened locally and there might still be damage done to the vehicle.
The game poorly represent this however and the ERA block simply disappear and the armor behind is left in pristine condition. A non penetrating hit from a tungsten or depleted uranium dart launched at 1,700 meters per second still hit a tank with incredible levels of energy, wether it penetrates the fighting compartment or not and it's really not an all or nothing thing.
As for Russian tanks performance in Ukraine, they mostly suffer from being used very incompetently by the undertrained russian army and if you watch personalities that are actually military officers or trully knowledgeable about armored warfare, they almost always point out the vastly lacking combined warfare ability of the russian army, the horrible reconnaissance and the overall very low skill of soldiers. Blaming weapons for military failure is just shifting the blame from an incompetent military toward civilian engineers that don't have the political clout to defend their work. It's an alibi for military failure, not a plausible explanation. History is full of examples of highly trained and intelligent soldiers surmounting the inferiority of their weapons, by outthinking and outmanoeuvering the enemy. The examples of stellar, first rate soldiers being betrayed by their own weapons are much less numerous unless there is a vast technological gap between the combattants.

Just got this tank but I don’t know what line up to add it to. I don’t want it to add it to my 10.0 line up as it would cause to much up tiers but I don’t want to add it to my 11.0-11.7 line up as I feel it won’t do well up there. Should I give it its own line up or add it to an existing one?
It gets constant downtiers, I use it with Object 292, mi35-m and 2S6.

T80UM2 has 3bm46 at the same br but all the advantages of a t80 over t72

Russian tanks have one thing that makes me despise them, otherwise they're very good in game, and it's no fucking reverse speed. Can't play like this when you've played leo 2 forever....

Russian ERA is definitely overperforming in game, but on the whole, it performs much better than NATO armor simply due to NATO tanks missing certain shells which completely negate ERA. ERA has pros and cons. ERA can protect well against APFSDS and HEAT, but can't withstand a capped long rod APFSDS shell, which detonates the ERA before the rod gets within range of the ERA's disruption capability.
All I hear is "Only my nation should be allowed to leave spawn and not get 1-shot"

@@militaristaustrian Not really japan also got their Type10 thats the best and most modern japanese MBT, china also got their most modern MBT the ZTZ-99 LCT. In terms of armor you can compare the first T-90M with the Merkava Mk4M but without APS.

Ok... I'll have to ask where you're shooting Abrams tanks from the front and what rounds you're using. The Abrams LFP is such an easy pen, literally any dart with 400+mm of pen can go thru it and the turret ring still gets us Abrams players killed a lot. The turrets are a no-go unless you're fighting base M1 Abrams tanks/KVTs and you're using rounds like 3BM42 to their turret cheeks which are ez penetrations. Even 3BM42 can pen the base M1A1 and IPM1 right turret cheek (where the gunner's sight and .50 cal is) at closer ranges, basically crippling them.
As for Russian tanks being weak, the T-80BVM would like to have a word with you. Not to mention the ammo in their autoloaders not exploding when hit with even top tier darts at times, not just the BVM mind you.
@@icy3-1 hey bro! yeah i would loooove to talk to my BVM because when i have it , it really sucks , but when i face it it's insane. yeah maybe i suck at toptier "problary do" but in my experience the abrahams are nearly immortal. but again i dont know their weakspots in front. always waited until i can see the sides. I use 3bm60 offcourse but doesnt do it 95% of the time. The turretring on abrahams are so tiny it's like hitting a needle with a 9milimeter. but thanks alot for the tip about the right turretcheek. i will try that :).
@@djantraxx86 As an avid Abrams player, the Abrams tanks are far from invincible. Other top tier US mains/players would agree with me here. Literally the only ones with actual armor are the AIM, HC, A2, and A2 SEP, and they only really have armor on their turret cheeks. The base M1/KVT are very easy to pen all around even from the front. The tanks they have to face off against have no trouble against them at all. The IPM1 and base M1A1 are slightly better off but as previously mentioned, more powerful darts can still go through their thicker turret cheeks especially up close, and top tier darts can punch thru their cheeks with no issues.
Do not try to shoot the turret cheeks of any top tier Abrams tank unless you're sure it's an IPM1 or the base M1A1 (which are all easy enough to tell apart anyway; the IPM1/M1A1 have the same turret armor). You cannot pen those with any dart at typical combat ranges.
3BM60 and even Tier 1 3BM42 (as with any other dart with more than 400mm of pen) are more than enough to pen the Abrams hull, you literally don't even have to aim unless you get an unlucky richochet when you hit the Abrams UFP. The turret ring is also very exposed and quite massive, basically the largest and most exposed at top tier and is very easy to hit. If all else fails, you could always just go for the mantlet like what we do to Russian tanks ourselves.
If you're actually having difficulties playing the BVM against Abrams tanks... I don't know what else to say at this point
@@icy3-1 okey. You make it sound easy but I swear when I play toptier with russia or sweden it's the same thing. If I dont get the first shot right on the lower front sides it's back to hangar. If I shot any turret it always richochet or it says "hit" or their commander just died but doesnt matter they just rotate and bye bye t80bvm. But I dont know if my toptier is cursed because i play well in all other ranks. But toptier i litterally suck ass. XD but I know the weakspot on russian tanks are nearly always in the lower front. Turret armor isn't going to save you when you don't have the gun depression to take advantage of it
Those things have no direct correlation, soviet tanks aren’t meant to hull down and run fire drills like abrams, big open fields remember? They have no gun depression because they don’t “need” it, doctrinally and layout wise
I play alot of T72/64/80/90 and this is blatantly wrong. The gun depression is usable if you play alot and learn

People can say what they will about the Russian tanks in being "overpowered" really they aren't. I do acknowledge the fact that the autoloaders seemingly eat shells sometimes. How ever, I don't think anyone has factored in that the Shell after penetrating through say Relikt ERA, the Track, the 80mms sides, and maybe a Carousel Shield. The rod at that point is s e v e r e l y degraded by that point. Which is probably a cause of Russian autoloaders eating shells. On the note of "ERA being overpowered." It's the same thing with Russian Bias, it's just something people complain about when they die because they screwed up a shot on something. BS shots happen against *everything* not just *Russian tanks.* You can go watch Armor Penetration simulations of say an M1A2 with M829A2 against a T-80Us upper plate with Kontakt 5. Guess what? It doesn't penetrate. It will always be annoying when people jump on the "Russian's are so OP and overperforming" when they just came up with a design that isn't half bad in some places. It's a well known fact on how effective Kontakt 5 and Relikt is against APFSDS projectiles. Do your research, become less pressed when you don't pen in spots where you won't.

T-90A is basically a T-72 hull with new turret which is partly cast and has welded on ''boxes'' with composite armor...it's pretty similar to Abrams evolution, where you had M1 and that evolved to M1A2, but Russia has a special system for naming their tanks, also the new T-90M is more than equal to anthing west can produce, since we seen Leopards and Bradleys get obliterated by Ka-52s and Mi-28s...

This game is rank with Russian bias, the Russian dog devs have mede it so the Russian top teir tanks can hit the US tanks anywhere and insta kill, where as the US has to hit an exact spot and even then sometimes doesn't kill. I really don't like the Russian bias in this game.
