    I was driving down the interstate here in Fl and I saw about 10-12 wild guineas and said to my brother "People don't know how valuable those are when you're in a heavy wooded and/or grassy area, otherwise somebody would have scooped them up already"

    I worked as a surveyor for a couple of years in North Georgia. I surveyed large tracks of undeveloped land and no amount of bug spray would keep the ticks off. There were days I would pull anywhere from 5 to 10 ticks off me at a time I became extremely one summer and the doctors could not diagnose me, but I am sure it was due to tick bites. I would put up with some loud birds before I would go through the illness I went through with ticks!

    They are amazing animals and the amount of ticks they will eat is amazing. We have had them last a couple years but not breed for me. My uncle had them breed and ended up with almost 100 of them. He lived behind a battle field and the conservation department told him that they were responsible for the increase in the deer population on the battlefield and the overall health of the deer. As far as the noise, well I look at it like this it may make someone crazy but it will not cause cancer and the chemicals they are definitely capable of causing cancer in humans and pets.

    We've had guineas for three years. After a few months of having them, I have seen ONE tick on our farm. We love our guinea fowl. The biggest problem we've had is that until they're grown and experienced, they seem to be dumb as rocks and will find any way imaginable to die.

    I love them! I call them my barnyard bullies. When I have them I may find an odd tick on a cow. Without them, my cows are loaded with ticks. I raise them with a couple of chicken chicks around the same age. That way they will go into the hen house at night.

    We have 14 White African Guinea's and 1 African Goose who thinks it is a Guinea. We love them and after awhile the noise they make becomes background noise. A benefit to the noise they make is that when they start making a lot a noise it is a signal to our Great Pyrenees to run and check the parameter. He seems to be attuned to their noise. It is like sounding the alarm. Also Guinea's will stick around longer if they are raised with chickens. At least that is our experience.

    • @learninladyhomesteader9374
      @learninladyhomesteader9374 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for mentioning that bc I was wondering how to get them to stick around more. I heard if you home them like not let them out of their coop for 3 months it “homes” them to the spot butttt that’s 3 months of prime tick time with them not eating ticks so I didn’t want to do that. Have to get a coop quickly together for them though and hate to do it to have them leave shortly after! Do they do okay with ducks too? Am thinking of getting some ducks and Guineas together

    • @DontBeFooledAmerica1
      @DontBeFooledAmerica1 2 місяці тому

      @@learninladyhomesteader9374 Our experience with ducks is they are a lot more messy. Our Guinea's stick around with the chickens. I think what the American Homesteader says about Guinea's being more of a temporary bird is true. We get their eggs and let Bantams hatch them out. Bantams are much better at taking care of young chicks than Guinea's. First time I let a Guinea hatch out her own she just ran off and left them to fend for them selves which inevidibly means death to the chicks. Guineas are good birds but a little on the dumb side when it comes to survival. Makes me wonder how they have made it for so long especially since they are native to Africa.

      @@DontBeFooledAmerica1 thank you bc kept asking about that with the ducks (bc we have some wet soppy areas here thought would be good for ducks) but wanted to know before we start if they do well with them or not. Will just get some more layers to raise up with them then. 🤷‍♀️ thank you!

    On our Rocky Mtn Homestead, we had a bunch of ticks on our property down by our gate area...We brought in our male and female guinea and we haven't seen ticks for 19 years.... They obliterated them. Our female guinea disappeared, but our male guinea lived a very long time until he died of old age...We got 10 guineas later, not for ticks, but for just to have on our homestead...Like you said, they all nested in the trees and one by one they all were killed off by something. With our last two guineas, both males, one of them killed the other and then our dog killed the last one.
    Those first 2 guineas we had killed about 7 guinea pigs that we had in a cage next to them in just one night...I didn't know then but learned that they go after rodents, too...They can also go after your chickens and ducks...

They would gang up on roosters and beat them up and in the winter they won't go in the coop. 2 of them flew off before dark and were gone for 2 of the coldest nights at negative 36. When they did return they had a few frostbitten toes. They would also stand on the top of my chimney while the woodstove was burning screeching in the smoke. Never again..lol

      Getting them as adults is less work. But if you get them as adults, be sure to keep them locked up in a coop for about 3 weeks before you turn them loose. That teaches them where home is. Chicks are also usually much cheaper.

    Looks like they need piperzine in their water for gap worms maybe, opening their mouth like that.

      I doubt it. Gapeworms are pretty rare as far as I know and its usually spread in the wild. These come from a commercial hatchery. If something happens, I'll keep everyone posted

    We had them before, they are extremely noisy and don't stay on property. Most of them were either killed by predators or they wandered off and never came back. I wouldn't get them again, not worth the aggravation.
