  • 📚👨‍⚕️Hi, I'm Dr. Jeff Knuppel, a psychiatrist with over 24 years of experience in the U.S. If you're stepping into a psychiatrist's office for the first time, or you've already got an appointment lined up, this video is tailored just for you! 🌟 I'll guide you through what to anticipate and how you can prepare to ensure you derive the maximum benefit from your visit. 📈
*Preparation is key!* Don't fall into the trap of arriving unprepared, thinking your psychiatrist will handle everything. While we can, a little preparation from you can significantly enhance the help we provide. To aid in this, I've included a link to a *FREE Google Doc checklist* below, designed to help you prep for your appointment. It'll make more sense after watching the video, so make sure to check it out! 📋✅
    In this video, I'll share:
    - An overview of the initial appointment process 📊
    - How to manage any appointment-related anxiety 😌
    - The importance of knowing why you're seeking help 🤔
    - What to expect during the discussion of your symptoms, past psychiatric history, substance use, medical history, and more 🗣️
    - The significance of understanding your family psychiatric history 🌳
    - The role of social history in your psychiatric assessment 🏠
    - Tips on how to track your progress effectively 📝
Remember, this appointment is not just for the psychiatrist to learn about you but also an opportunity for you to assess whether this psychiatrist is the right fit for you. 🤝
Your comfort and understanding of the treatment plan are paramount. If a specific medication is recommended, I'll discuss how you should ensure you're fully informed about its risks, benefits, and potential side effects. 🚫💊
*Don't miss the checklist* I've linked in the description to get ready for your appointment.

Here's the Google Doc 🔗 **Checklist Link**: You can print this out or copy it to your own Google account. To copy it to your account, be sure you're signed into your Google Account. Then, click on the below link. Click on the File menu then "Make a Copy." Do NOT click on "Request Edit Access" - it's unnecessary, and nothing will happen if you do. You can view and/or print it out if you're not logged into your Google account.

Thank you Dr for this very informative video. I havent had therapy in almost 5 years and had enough courage recently to finally reach out for help. Allot happened in life since last time i got some advice from a professional. I think I experienced ptsd after my wife cancer battle that began 3 and a half years ago. I seen a therapist not a psychiatrist previously. The psychiatrist I set appointment with is much older and hopefully i can vibe with him.

Best wishes on your journey. I hope you’ll advocate for what you feel you need. If you don’t vibe with him, I hope you’ll look elsewhere. There are good psychiatrists and therapists out there, but not everyone’s a good fit, and not everyone’s good at what they do.

Thank you for breaking it down, Dr. Knuppel. It helps me better prepare because I get flustered in the moment.

You’re very welcome! Let me know as a reply here if you have any further questions about the process. Just remind yourself that you’re just a human being dealing with other human beings. None of us are perfect, we’re all just doing the best we can. You’ll get through it😊
