    hey, hi. just a small tech correction. I watched the segment twice to make sure I didn't mis-hear it. On flash sync, any shutter speed UP TO flash sync gives a complete open frame before the second curtain starts to close. That is because the flash exposure needs to expose the whole frame at once. the procedure where the second curtain starts to fall before the first curtain reaches the bottom is used for fast shutter speeds without flash. Yes the image sort of "wipes" onto the sensor or film, but one curtain closely following the other makes for a very short duration of exposure for any point on the sensor that the "swipe of light" passes over. This allows you to get a 1/1000 sec exposure over any one point on the sensor. Again, the flash sync speed is the fastest speed at which the whole mechanism can expose the whole sensor, fire the flash, and then close the second curtain. If you use a flash with a shutter speed above that you will see part of the frame under exposed because the second curtain was already in the way when the flash fired. No offense, just the facts so folks can dig it.

    Excellent video. I was getting mentally hung up on why there was a limit to shutter speed for flash and you explained that there is a difference in how the shutter operates. Thanks!

    Is there a way to change the shutter tension on those dslr shutters? Because on one of my cameras it's out of sync, so I get a too dark or completely black image.

    Thanks for the video. I just purchased a Nikon D7200. and after testing the rear curtain flash while it was in HSS mode, the shutter just got 'stuck'. It wouldn't open again subsequently after I release the shutter. And there is an 'ERR' (error message) blinking on the LCD. Kindly advise.

    Today...I was trying to see why my Sony a300's steady shot wont work..and while doing this I was trying to move the sensor up manually...with an object, while the camera was in BULB mode......needless to say..i slightly let the shutter button loose..and the da............................m shutter fell down onto the tool I was using...and I was extremely pi...........off...and two blades from the shutter popped out of their tracks..like in your video..and amazingly while in the camera I took two tools and held the shutter blades and moved them back into there track...and this was on TWO blades..and I got it back and it worked...unbelievable right???? of course the sensor is behind the shutter..and I touched it..so I had to do a sensor clean..which I never want to do.

    Nice to see how fragile they are. Nobody is going to stick their finger through their own shutter to find out. It took more than I though it would to destroy it.

    • @maxfactor4209

      actually most of the noise you hear is bcz of the mirror goes upward not shutter

      A nikon set to Quiet shutter...
      that's silent
      Just think that your camera's flipping the mirror up witch is the loud part...

    • @SMGJohn
      @SMGJohn 9 років тому

      cleantones Hybrid cameras are quieter, although the Sony A7 series are pretty darn loud cause they have theses monster large shutters to close and open and because Hybrids does not have a mirror to protect the shutter they kind of need to be more robust.

      If you want them to be fast, they can't be silent. Rapid movement has it's drawbacks.

      because its a mechanical action and that needs a mechanical sound i guess the more expensive they are the better dampening system anyway that sound is what you want to here its sort of an indicator that you took the picture not just to you but for the subject if it can hear and recognise it that is !

    hi thanks for the interesting video, its on a subject close to my heart at the moment as I ve a jammed shutter on my Nikon. I hadn t used the FM2 for about ten years n yesterday I found it and the shutter had been left cocked so i fired it only to find I couldnt wind it on and the shutter had only partially returned. I opened it up to film this video. Is there an easy fix or is it camera repair Pro, in which case I d have to send it off as I m miles from anywhere like that. link below for my video.
    Thanks in advance

    I dont understand why shutters are so expensive...if it were the sensor and/or processor board Id understand.

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 3 роки тому

      Partially because it has high precision requirements. But to be honest, shutters are NOT are fragile as people think, nor are they difficult or costly to manufacture. From what you'd see people talking about shutters, you'd think they were as delicate as 1 ply toilet paper. But the reason why they're soo expensive......because it's the only moving part that they can feign is expensive to highway rob people. It's the only true moving part in the camera that the camera relies on for operation. A mirror box is just a simple rotating hinge, something people can easily understand and go "uh, that's $300?!". But by making the shutter more "mystical", and due to the complex look of its operation, they can go "$300 pls, because it's not getting fixed otherwise". Any grunt in an electronic repair store can replace a bad PCB, but they have no clue about how to fix a shutter. Specialized part + specialized worker = high price. In essence, it's highway robbery. It's "this camera isn't going to work unless I do this to fix it, and your X dollar camera is useless until I do it, so pay up!".
