Great video !! I replaced the pulley the first time but paid the mechanic $20 to swap it out as I brought him the alternator and pulley. I was happy. This time... I bought the tool and the pulley. Video is great and so true about the noise that is made when the pulley is bad. The first time I thought my tensioner was bad as you stated. LOL Thanks again.

Great video Mike. Was about to order a new power sterring pump as I assumed wrongly that was the culprit. Symptoms you describe (noisy rattle accompanied with flapping belt) match exactly what I'm hearing on my 2001 TDI passat. Its also done 73,000 which seems to align with the espected service life of the alternator pulley. Will be ordering a new pulley and pulley removal tool off interent. Thanks again.
nice one , last year i had the cam belt and a bottom pulley and a belt tentioner fitted the garage removed all the above to do the job , thats why i was under the impression it may have to come back of , great video by the way ; )
NVM, it's a deceleration coupler clutch. Used for torque control and to relieve the stress on the drive belt system. Actually it's an ingenious design. Reduces noise, belt tension from the alternator, and torque control.
Thankyou Very Much for this video! Thanks to you I've just replaced the clutch pulley on my wife's ford Galaxy. In our case the pulley fell off!!! Thankfully she was only doing 10mph at the time. I had to angle grind off the remainder of the old pulley shaft before I could fit the new. Tanks a million ;-)
Thank you bro. I almost spent a lot of money. Your video is definitely better than a lot here on UA-cam because you addressed all faulty possibilities on the pulley. Awesome. 🖒🖒🖒
EXCELLENT VIDEO!!! I looked all over to find how to test the OAP or ADP, then I found your video. You showed how to test and replace and then test the new installed part. Thank you!!!
your a star. i think you just answered my questions with this video as i was just about to go and buy a new alternator but from this i can tell its definitely the clutch pulley because i have had all the belts changed and the tensioner but i still had allot of noise coming from the engine and it was very loud when the car is still and you turn the steering wheel but from this analysis am dead sure its the clutch pulley thanks allot

Great video. Damnit if I haven't changed dozens on Nissan Altimas, Mercedes, VWs, etc and they never let go that easily. I broke a bit on the last C-class Alternator pulley I did because it was so stubborn. Before attempting this repair yourself, be prepared for a fight and cussing.
A seized alternator pulley caused a chain reaction of damage on my TDI. The added force of the alternator decelerating and the belt driven components receiving more stress, it caused my crankshaft timing gear to move and bent the valves in the engine. I wish I knew about these clutched pulleys short lifespan, it would have saved me lots of money in repairs.
That is fascinating. Thanks for posting. The pulley came off of the alternator this morning on my EuroVan (with a 1.9L TDI). Wasn't able to find it, but the shaft is okay. Assuming it must have seized up. I installed it a little over three years ago, an upgrade from the solid pulley that was on there. It appears that the OE INA brand pulley is discontinued for my particular setup, but Gates and Hella still seem to produce them. I've ordered both. I think the original INA pulley I installed had seen about 60,000 miles.
@@conorf8091 Definitely worth the peace of mind. I bought a spare INA pulley for the future. I don't want to be taking my engine apart again over a pulley or a timing belt issue caused by a failed pulley.

Hello Donna, If the noises are irregular it is more then likely the clutch pulley. Consequence of driving like that are quite severe. The pulley will fall off and destroy the shaft on the alternator, which means that you might need a new one. Better get that checked.
Hello there, If you have a Valeo alternator it could be it,windings in the rotor use to go in them and that will cause the engine to shake badly. But there is a plethora of different things that can also cause it,worn engine mounts, worn crankshaft rubber pulley etc.
Hello mate, Your alternator is a popular denso type and it has a clutch pulley. Noise that you are talking about can be caused by either the clutch pulely or the bearings in the alternator. Both of them are easy to check, just take the belt of the alternator and give it a spin with your hand. That should give you a fair idea are the bearings quiet,if they are it means that it has to be the clutch pulley.
Hello mate, If you took the belt off,and all 2 bolts out of it it should come out. If it doesn't just use a large screw driver as a leaver and leaver it up from the side. Just make sure you are not supporting the screw driver on anything plastic. It should come up easily then, there is always bit of a force required with those ones :D.
same problem, i have taken the alternator off for now, would it be ok to replace it with a second hand one from a scrap yard? i dont have the tools to replace just the pulley?
We had (nearly?) frozen pulley and it resulted in belt flapping and pulley breaking down. Luckily it stayed in place tilted and the belt dropped from the tensioner and didn't break anything. The tensioner was able to keep the belt strict enough to not cause noise, though. Of course, I didn't know that the belt flapping was a clear sign for frozen pulley. After replacing the alternator the belt goes smoothly so the tensioner didn't get damaged.

All car manufacturer need to put this in the owners' manual: when everything in the accessories belt is fine but the tensioner is still vibrating, inspect the alternator overrunning pulley.
Thanks for the information. No apparent sign of wear marks on the casing. New tensioner and idler pulley have been fitted but the belt is flapping on tick over sounds awful. Do you not need a separate torx bit which goes through the spline nut to hold the alternator shaft in place? Does using the impact driver remove the need to hold the alternator shaft in place with another bit tool?
some old mechanics are unaware of the damage a clutch pulley can cause. They will have you changing belts, tensioners and etc not knowing that the clutch pulley is the issue by being seized.
Howdy, great questions here. 1) Need for clutch pulley: They are used because in modern cars "fan belts" are much longer than they used to be.And as you might not know when the engine is idling its motion its not smooth, the revs go up and down thousands of times per minute (every time there is a combustion in a chamber the fan belt gets a little "pull"). Due to this the fan belt streches an destreches thousands times per minute,
It is because the old V-belts slipped under the same stress. With the new serpentine multi-groove belts, they don't slip and transfer all of the stress to the other components.
@allanmichealsmith Not at all, there are two options,in some models alternator just comes off after removing two main bolts, plug wire, and main positive wire.
