For anyone doing this job, once the belt is off test your clutch pulley..it should spin in the clockwise direction and not anticlockwise. Generally the tensioner can fail when the alternator pulley is failing.
True, i have that problem, but dont have parts for generator, do you know how long it can go before it break a new belt or tensioner if i not repear the generator?
3 years late but thank you for having this up here in the US not many techs for TDI’s and those that exist charge so much for this job so just thank you so much helped out a ton
A lot of work for one bolt 😊 In the past I thought I had problem with tensioner but actually it was alternator clutch pulley which pulls tensioner. Nice job!
I've never owned a car that has an engine sitting sideways like that. As you say, a few amount of bits have to come off first, but all in all it didn't look too bad. I think your skills helped make it look easy too.
Thank you for the video! Notes that it's totally useless to take off all the front parts... I did this operation for the tensioner and all you need is to take off wheel, plastics around and that's enough 👍☺️
Oh mate, I'm sorry about what I told yesterday because I started the operation but without ended it and was thinking that I had access without take off all front parts as you did and present in your video BUT I was wrong ! I wanted to thank you from Belgium because it is a f****** moment and I mean, Audi engineers are crazy to imagine a such complicated access for a "simple" belt tensioner... Crazy crazy crazy ! Anyway, HUGE thank's for your sharing because I didn't find any other full presentation as yours 🙏🤙 Gold thumbs UP
In a lot of cases the jumping tensioner could be a consequence of the failing alternator clutch pulley, so once the belt is out it may worth checking. It should freewheel to one direction and should drive the alternator to the other.
Great coverage with excellent pictures and step by step guide. This will have the VW-Skoda Main 'Stealers' (dealers) worried, as it clearly shows you how to save hundreds by doing this job yourself.

Hey Matt, yeah quite few bits has to come out until you can get to the tensioner bolt such a awkward place but it doesn’t really take too long to get it done 😊 cheers mate 👍👍👍👍
I've seen that you were able to remove the pulley from the tensioner. Etka is not listing this part, do you think it is available from aftermarket brands like dayco, INA or Skf?
How's she goin'? Igor, just to know what needs to come off so that you can get to this part is a skill not many people have!! You are one in a million brother!!! Lots of part removal and then 'the prize' as you say!!! Well done and a nice video!!! Take care!!!

Really great and helpful video. I'm in the process of a Thermostat replacement ( as my car didn't want to get up to operating temperature ) in the process I decided to replace the belt and the Tensioner
What I experienced with the car it wasn't getting up to operating temperature. Like the thermostat stuck wide open. In case it won't solve my problem would you recommend something else to check?
I did not know that. I guess it is the right time to replace that too. Ordered from Amazon. Will be here tomorrow. Thanks a lot. Is it difficult to change?
