"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
    “Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on UA-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on UA-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

My fiancés father died last year after 15 years of cancer, a Vietnam veteran exposed to agent orange. He got throat and tongue cancer several times (had his tongue removed because of it) and lost his teeth and speech. Thank god his treatments were paid for, but now the government wants to say that it wasn’t the agent orange that caused it. They’ve already denied our claim, but we won’t stop fighting. Her family deserves justice after a 15 year cancer battle and watching him deteriorate over the years.

It's inexcusable that the US hasn't join the rest of the modern world in guaranteeing healthcare to everyone despite having the resources to easily do so, but at least one could make the (cruel and unusual) argument that it's a matter of personal responsibility. I don't like how we hold up people in uniform (military & first responders) as deserving more than any other citizen. Everyone has an important part in society & is deserving of basic human rights. This country is under no real threat so the protecting our freedom propaganda just falls flat. However, it is unconscionable that the military has a long history of exposing it's soldiers to foreseeable health risks such as witnessing nuclear tests, agent orange, depleted uranium shells, burn pits etc. Of course, the veterans deserve the same as everyone, health care & basic decency

"I don't like how we hold up people in uniform (military & first responders) as deserving more than any other citizen."
Wow, where the hell did that come from?!?
Not only do they 'deserve' it (unless you are gonna go rushing into burning buildings to save lives), they "earn" it and most importantly, they were promised it. When they signed that contract, to go and do the nastiest and most dangerous "jobs" you can imagine. Part of that contract stipulates that any job-related illnesses or injuries will be taken care of by their employer.
Yes, everybody should have universal healthcare. But, in the present "free-market" kleptocracy, this is one of the very few ways you can get your healthcare paid by your employer. So, keep that shade you're throwing to yourself. That dog don't hunt.
"This country is under no real threat" We part ways right there. You need to take off the rose colored glasses and do some traveling around this rock we call earth. Because that statement doesn't hold water and is dangerously naive.

@@tjmul3381 , I'm honestly not in the mood to get in a debate about this, especially with predictable talking points used to contradict my position.
I will just comment on a couple of your points. Doubtless, being in the fire department can put you in risky situations; but there are several jobs that are just as or more dangerous and yet they don't receive the same attention or visceral gut reaction.
This country is under no threat of physical invasion or any other military threat. The only low intensity threats we face are the result of our military presence or interference in & with out nations affairs. Even the recent increase in the real threat of Russian nuclear attack is the result of our interference in Ukraine (how about the support of the 2014 coup for one) & treating Russia with no respect for 30 years.
Of course, these military personnel & veterans deserve the health care they were promised, but I continue to believe that treating the military like they have a special position in society is the stuff of jingoism & fascism

    • @tjmul3381

@@dissonantvibe8585What utter facile bullshit. If you were not in the mood to debate this than you had the simple choice not to reply. You didn't. So, obviously, you don't like to speak plainly.
Ah, but you do like to speak from a self-supposed superior position and yet you still infer that you are speaking for the equality of all. That's a fascinating internal contradiction that I hope you are receiving counseling for with the hope of resolving.
This is what I have come to understand as the essence of your somewhat jumbled thinking:
You don't like people who wear a uniform (in particular a military one) and you don't like that the vast majority of the society we live in doesn't agree with your feelings.
Now, allow me to point out your 'predictable talking points' and the sources they came from.
'This country is under no threat of physical invasion or any other military threat.'
That was the exact talking point put forth by the "America First" movement of the 1930's. It was false and dangerously misguided then and it is even more so now.
With the present state of technology, there is nowhere on earth that is safe and untouchable. To think differently is to deny reality.
'The only low intensity threats we face are the result of our military presence or interference in & with out nations affairs. Even the recent increase in the real threat of Russian nuclear attack is the result of our interference in Ukraine (how about the support of the 2014 coup for one) & treating Russia with no respect for 30 years.'
Whether you realize it or not, with this statement, you are in complete agreement with Tucker Carlson and seem to sympathize with the dictator Putin.
Did you mean to so closely mimic his talking points or is that a coincidence?
Finally, in your closing statement, you seem to distill your feelings down to a comprehensive thought. Yet you still felt the need to mollify it first:
'Of course, these military personnel & veterans deserve the health care they were promised,'
(why did you bother with the above when you were going to add a) 'but' (before you let flow your inner truth?)
'I continue to believe that treating the military like they have a special position in society is the stuff of jingoism & fascism.'
Now, these last three lines, truly, are a statement worthy of an honest and forthright debate.
If, you care to reply, we can (with no further rancor or demeaning words from either of us) cut into the essence of this timely existential threat.
If not, I wish you well.

This reminds me of the actual movie that was actually made as a comedy, tongue-in-cheek about jon stewart, where the comedian running for president (as a joke) was actually played by Robin Williams. In the movie, he won because of a glitch, one that was corrected, but what if someone like Jon actually did run, actually did win for real? The idea is tantalizing. For the record, the movie was terrible IMO but it says something that lots of people saw it just because of the premise it put forward, during the Bush administration when the idea of someone like Stewart running was rather popular.

Veterans should never wonder if their medical bills will be covered because in a sensible country medical bills wouldn't exist. Same is true for veterans getting their college tuition covered because public college should be tuition free. In a sensible country the VA would exist simply to give a more veteran centered form of medical care and to give access to veteran centered benefits such as early retirement and guaranteed housing.
