First jazz record I ever heard, and still one of my favorites. Easy to get into, with Flora Purim, Stanley Clarke, Joe Farrell, and Airto, an amazing lineup. This led to Weather Report, then Bird, then hard bop, you get the idea. And it all started with RTF and this album. Still a big jazz fan with fusion, hard bop, bop, swing, and more. And all because of this album...

I’m not a fan of 70’s jazz - maybe I listened to too much of it in the ‘70’s - but always learn and find real value in your videos. Keep up the good work! 🎶

Fantastic review of one of my favorite albums of all time.
As an ECM fanatic, I hope you will review more ECM albums in the future.
A lot of ECM albums deserve your fabulous reviewing format.

Hey Allan really good review. Such a good review in fact that I grabbed my copy off the shelf and took it for a spin. It’s a beautiful album. Suggestion, you’ve probably heard this album before but if not I think you might enjoy Donald Byrd’s Electric Byrd. The 313 reissue sounds fantastic and what Donald accomplishes on this record is to create a more accessible and welcoming jazz fusion album listening experience for non jazz fans and listeners who might have been put off by Bitches Brew. This record would make for a great 10 minute review episode. Love your reviews! All the research and context surrounding the artists and the recording of these albums is very much appreciated by me. Thank you 😃

I’ve never listened to EB actually so this gives me some encouragement to do so. It’s quite a controversial record in his catalogue, that much I do know. Thanks for the tip!

    Hi Allan!
I love this record, great review!
    2 recommendations for 70s Fusion
    1 Billy Cobham "Spectrum"
    2 John Abercrombie "Timeless"
    Enjoy Japan!

Thank you Francisco. I must confess that I have tried a couple of times with Spectrum, to no avail. But that was a few years ago so maybe another spin is warranted. Thanks for the Abercrombie suggestion: he’s not an artist I know well at all so my curiosity is piqued!

Arigatō, Allan-san for making this pre-vacation review🇯🇵 I’m not well versed in Chick Correa and I did not pick up the Tone Poet of “Now He Sings, Now He Sobs.” I recently found a Europa Jazz label copy of a live Chick album with Woody Shaw, Hubert Laws and Dave Holland that was dirt cheap, so I’ll use that as my introductory to his music, but I’m very open “Return To Forever” and all of your suggestions.

Thanks Edward. Well as I say I don’t like all of what he did in the 70s, but overall his career is one of the great ones. I do recommend his 60s work, as a leader but also as a sideman.

Per your review, I will check out his great sideman work with Miles. I already have “The Thing To Do” with Blue Mitchell and I need “Polar AC” by Hubb. Corea has also guested on Mongo Santamaria, Donald Byrd, Herbie Mann, Wayne Shorter, Getz and Duke Pearson albums. An impressive Jazz resume. Please have as Horace Silver wrote: “Too Much Sake.” Sayonara!

Great review, Allan. Although this does not help with suggestions for other similar fusion from the '70s, an album I often pair with Return to Forever is, "Like Minds" by Gary Burton (with Corea, Metheny, Haynes, and Holland). It was recorded in 1997, so long after RTF but I find it has much in common; in melodic sophistication, ornamentation, tonalities and laid back vibes (no pun intended). It would probably stream very well on a Japanese train trip. 'Just sayin' ;-)

Interesting! Well our lengthy train rides are done with for now but I’m already thinking about a playlist for the flight home :-). Thanks for the suggestion.

For a companion piece, I would look to either Flora Purim's albums, like "500 Miles High" and/or Pat Metheny. I feel Pat was/is a better "get" than Jarrett any day, just can't get into Jarrett's work, but Methey's albums, starting with Watercolors, are really good and accessible while also being quite jazzy too.

      @oldestgamer Рік тому +1

Oops, meant to say "Open Your Eyes, You Can Fly" by Flora Purim, that one is in many ways a similar album to RTF, although not quite as good and less jazzy, check it out!

Hey I really love your channel and I think you do a fantastic job but I think you should call Joe Farrell exactly that.....
not Joe Phar rell...... at least that's how it sounds when you're saying his name

Ha! See, my natural inclination is to use the English pronunciation with the accent on the first syllable. But as he’s American I have always assumed the accent was on the second syllable, as is typical. No?
