CSU Opera: Hansel & Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck 11-6-15

- Based on the fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm, the opera tells the familiar tale of two children who happen upon a mysterious Gingerbread house in the woods, and are captured by a Witch who wants to eat them. Written early in the composer’s life, Humperdinck’s sister asked if he would set parts of a children’s play about Hansel and Gretel to music, and eventually the full opera. The composer succeeded in telling the simple fairy tale in a musical treatment of remarkable sophistication with captivating melodies and folk-like appeal. A beautiful version of the familiar fairy tale, this production is a wonderful first time opera experience, especially for families with little ones.
Directed by Tiffany Blake wiith the Colorado State University Sinfonia.
The performance was recorded by the RAMProductions student live event production team. RAMProductions was created by the Department of Journalism and Technical Communication at Colorado State University with support from Campus Television (CTV), the College of Liberal Arts, and the Division of External Relations.
I played this for my family while we decorated the tree. Nice job!

Did the witch just Whip, Stanky-Leg, and Hotline Bling?
seems legit
Hello, do you know where I could find the instrumental version of Hänsel und Gretel / Act 1: "Brüderchen, komm tanz mit mir"? Thank you!

Beautiful performance.
I agree and the witch makes me laugh

I believe der Hexenritt is this opera's climax, and I like it very much. Perhaps it is too difficult for the amateur singer.

with mic?
Where are the violins??
I only watched a half when I started to like the play or shall I say opera
Not bad
"The Witch" in this is embarrassing. It's partly a comedic role, but it needs to be terrifying too, and this witch was a joke. And it's a shame, because overall, it's not a bad production. "Hansel" was really excellent, "Gretel" was very good, the parents were fine. The orchestra did pretty well with such a difficult score. A different witch should have been found. Yes, the orchestra brass was consistently flat, but this is a college production, not a professional one.
Agreed. Also the witch was very, um, pink.
At least her lair looks amazing. It reminded me of Baba Yaga's house with chicken feet. And the Oreo cookies gate with skulls? Nice touch.
Hi
Sorry a witch sung by a by a guy in drag. Can't understand the comments on who the orchestra was so good, the strings WERE excellent but the brass, especially the horns and trumpets were consistently flat. Awful.
Agreed, the brass is laughably shocking!
David Trainer how about the woodwinds? They were fantastic too! The brass just need to tune!
it's not unusual to let a man sing the witch, but it should not just be for comic reasons as in this production. it should be a spieltenor as mime in siegfried. best witch i've ever heard was peter schreier, a pretty well known german singer in the 60s and 70s.
is this a male or a female singing for Hansel? cause I am sure there are male opera singers who could sing this part, and the same as having a real male play peter pan as well.
der Rest bis auf Hänsel und Gretel (beide gut)...auch nicht besser
Haensel should have been taken by a mezzo-soprano countertenor, not a woman. I understand the history of the role, but we've plentiful men today that can carry its vocal demands.
The character is a child. A typical countertenor would be overpowering. The role was written for a woman's mezzo-soprano voice, not a countertenor
Got a lot of countertenors in your local university?
Well, the orchestra is perfect, nothing against black voices, but the mother could not hold any note. The scenery has been disgusting. which trees are covered by rags? At all,i would give them a lesson in german pronunciacion. But maybe i would sound likewise in english
Oh dear. Their German accents are terrible. They should have done it in English.
