Always a delight to have appearance by Finster👍 I truly have high regard, respect, admiration for Pavvo as a music maker...actually for his whole talented family. I know he has made many wonderful recordings over his career with many orchestras(I own most of them🤣), but sadly I feel that the title you have chosen for this video describes how I feel about his recording history..."Almost Excellent. " Personally I feel the one obstacle that has kept him from growing as absolute #1, Greatest, GOAT is his globetrotting. I can only imagine what could have been achieved if Around his mid 30's he settled down with one orchestra for 25/30 years and created. He has so much to explore, experiment, discover, and refine, but you really need to be in one place with same group of people to really achieve that...just look at his Beethoven cycle. It's his path, he chose it, and he has made it woke for him much better than many others.
Thanks, Dave. Was wondering how this compares to his 8th with Frankfurt on RCA. In any event, I've been listening to the stunning Poschner 8th on Capriccio that you recommended last year and it is absolutely spectacular in every way!
Paavo is embarking on the entire Mahler and Bruckner cycles at the Tonhalle, starting with Mahler 5 in February (tickets went on sale last week, strangely enough the _cheaper_ tickets involve an after-the-concert mingling in the lobby with the orchestra members + drinks while the more _expensive_ tickets do not). I've been watching Paavo for a few years, really like what he does most of the time. First time saw his Mahler 5 I was impressed by a properly executed (for once) string glissando in the Adagietto which many conductors murder for some reason (it's plainly in the score).
I enjoyed this disc, albeit I echo Dave's reservations. It would've been thrilling as a one-off live concert but, as a _recording,_ it's not one I'll be returning to often, decent enough though it is.
Well, it looks like this was a live recording (Sep. 14/15/16 2022 at the Tonhalle). I certainly enjoyed their performance in Hamburg that November (along with Bruckner 3 & 6). I would of course never secretly make recordings for my own personal consumption, so I can't compare the performances.
Dave any chance you could do an overview of that Phase 4 favorite, Stanley Black? Fiedler across the pond. Recently heard his "Peter and the Wolf" with ...now get this..George Raft as the narrator! I'm not going to buy another Bruckner 8.
I really don't get this - Paavo Jarvi comparatively recently released a Bruckner 8th with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra on RCA (as part of his Bruckner cycle). I mean, how much Bruckner do we need from this guy (actually do we need more Bruckner period, particularly when there's so much excellent stuff out there already?). I can't imagine it's interpretatively that different than what we had before?
I might need to hear the official FRSO/Järvi release. I heard them do the Bruckner 8 in Prague, and I thought it was amazing (being in Prague did surely help a bit, for me). Whereas the UA-cam version of the same in the Frankfurter Alte Oper doesn't do anything for me. I've asked the orchestra, but there is no recording of their Prague performance...
I’m still seeking a great recording of this work, one that will make it stick in my craw. I’ve heard it countless times. I recognize it as Bruckner’s 8th when I hear it. I just can’t really recall any of it, much less hum it to you. It is such a beautiful wall of sound though.
Just an idea here... So some orchestras like the Frankfurt Radio Symphony and WDR have their official UA-cam channel and uploads their live perfomances to be watched on UA-cam, and usually they didn't really get released on CDs or streaming services. However, seems like a lot of people today (including myself) first get acquainted with the classics with these videos. One of my favorite examples are Honeck's Tchaikovsky 5th on Frankfurt, which is basically the first result if you search up the piece on UA-cam, and I think it is really quite good... interpretively similar to his recent recording, though I think the new recording has more confidence in it. Anyways, I think it would be cool if you dedicate a little "music chat" video about these official videos by orchestras, might be an interesting discussion!
(As for the relation of this comment to the video, I just randomly remembered that Paavo Järvi also did a Bruckner 8 recording on Frankfurt and it is second result on UA-cam search for the piece, so....)
Good MoringDave. this is truly uncanny. Paavo Jarvi and Tonhalle-Orc appeared at the BBC Proms on Wed 30, This is the second instance where your reviews just happened to feature a composer or conductor performing at the summer festival. Perchance, are you listening? Cheers

Too much Bruckner, yes. Heard the scherzo of this on the radio at the weekend, was fine, basically, but I’d be quite happy if I turned on the radio on a Saturday morning and didn’t hear it for some time..
Kinda cool that you let Finster practice with lighting for the stagehand internship.

It will take more than a glissando to make a good performance of the 5th.
@@DavesClassicalGuide Yes, a lot more!
Thanks Dave.
Can you do THE BEST Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture?

Have you or would you review Paavo Jarvi's Sibelius cycle? Thanks for sharing your insights and your sweet kitties!
I heard it. It was mediocre and I had no interest in discussing it further. Greetings from Mildred and Finster.

Overall this recording is definitely located on the positive white side of my ratings of Bruckner’s performances.

@@DavesClassicalGuide We’re good. :)
Gunter Wand conducting the Berlin Philharmonic is the one for me. Scott Varland
@@Bachback Thank you! I have Skrowaczewski. I'll try Wand.
@@Bachback Certainly the most memorable performance I've heard (over the radio, from the BBC Proms) was from Wand, I think with the BBC SO.
