- The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Trombone section (Colin Williams, Nathan Zgonc and George Curran) is joined by tubist Andrew Miller (Alabama Symphony and CSU faculty member) performing excerpts from Bruckner's Symphony No. 8 on a master class at the 2012 Southeast Trombone Symposium. The orchestra excerpts master class was held in Legacy Hall at the RiverCenter for the Performing arts on 21 June, 2012. The 2012 STS faculty included Colin Williams, Nathan Zgonc, George Curran, CSU Trombone Professor Bradley Palmer, and New York Metropolitan Opera Bass Trombonist Paul Pollard. The STS is held annually at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia. www.columbusstate.edu/sts
These four guys produced the power of an entire brass section, intense
Well it IS the entire low brass section xd
3 trombones are so loud on their own that I can't imagine anyone doubling them for a greater effect. It would overshadow everything, you wouldn't hear the rest of the orchestra.
@@theodentherenewed4785 Agreed
@@theodentherenewed4785 That is why the brass section is at the back of the orchestra no?
@@theodentherenewed4785 kinda like Shostakovich did with his 7th symphony
What a weak clap for such a well played excerpt
half of them fainted
afdsadf 147852369 lol
More than likely there weren’t enough people there to make the applause louder, sadly.
Half of them *died* from the sound alone
Really in tune. Gave me chills after 5 seconds.
+Clayton Wahlstrom Same. I've never heard such perfect pitch
This would make a really classy ring tone...
I already did that and it's AWESOME 😀👍🤘
or a remarkably effective alarm clock.

Yessssss
@@CoyWhite oh my God that would freak me out lmao
Peacefully sleeping and then **BWAAAAAAAAA BWA BWAAAAAAAAAAAAA**
You know that it is an amazing section when you can hear the overtone series of the chord, and their tuning adds the "missing" voices on top of the chord. Like at 0:29... You can hear a high C even though it isn't being played.
@@holdenvf How so?
YourNewOpp -REDX- he’s right you’ll only be able to hear if you have good musical ears
That’s really interesting how that works
The term is called a "resultant tone". Chord needs to be perfectly balanced and in tune. Great thing to hear live for sure
wait a high c isnt being played? LOL
This has to be one of the best low brass excerpts I've ever heard. I actually like the section on their own (like this) than in the actual piece itself. It sounds like an organ.
And this is just 4 players, think of the potential 🤩
I listen to this at least ten times per day. I agree that it's better than listening to the symphony itself.
What a massive wall of sound! Love it!!!
sick blend with that C in the staff
ohhhh Godddd eargasm super acurate and the picth its just perfect and the blending super amazing
No one ever talks about bass drops in classical music but this one is amazing 0:06
I'm glad you didn't talk me to death before you played that great full sound.
I think the 2nd trombone being louder makes the chords sound much more full.
2nd bone is the glue for those chords in most symphony orchestra/wind ensemble music
I don't know of another trombonist who so perfectly nails intonation every time like Colin Williams.
No, the accuracy and pitch are pretty pristine..
This is so disgusting (in the good way). So powerful!!
True, especially since the higher voices tend to be more conspicuous than the supporting harmonies
I run my excerpts with this recording :) So much better than playing them by yourself...
Fantastic playing man!!! What a beautiful sound you have... Wow!
When your fourth movement needs to sound like a bulk carrier coming into Duluth in a blizzard.
DAMN this is good!!!
Don't mind my tears of joy. Just keep playing! ;'D
BRUH THAT WAS AMAZING. YALL BETTER HAVE CLAPPED MORE
Shoutout to my furries
Nate, the meat in that Sandwich is SO PHAT!!!!
Magnificent!! Accurate, articulate, balanced, commanding and powerful. WWBD! What would Brückner do!! He would of built an orchestra around this lower brass section !
Fabulous!!! Great work!!!
Esto es impresionante.
I’d love to be there front row... the power of low brass hitting my face
Great!!!!!
Not angry this came up in my feed
WOW
When I become a superhero, this is my theme
Nathan!!!
@Henk Jan Tilma
They sound great. Especially the Chord at 10. Incredibly blended.
The problems that you are hearing with the tuning are actually because they are slightly out of balance making them sound out of tune. Its because the 2nd trombone is playing too loud in the chords at 13 seconds and 31 seconds. If the 3rd of the chord is played too loudly, it will sound out of tune. The Root and the fifth have to be played slightly louder then the third for it to ring in tune.
I’m glad you mentioned the 2nd too loud in some parts, also he was a bit flat, just a touch.just after 30 seconds seems like he’s searching a bit. All in all, at 10 sec it’s incredible.
This gives you that stank face (in a good way)
Awesome power
this is the beginning of the cavaliers 2015 show "Game On"
It's also featured in Crown's 2018 show
Holy Crap!
Hey guys, until one of us takes their positions, why don't we let them be the professionals, okay? They do that much better than any of us can.
Go!
...NEED TO ADD THAT TRUMPET PART.
Grave!
I am a high brass player. This is what you want from brass.
Sounds like quad forte 🤤
🚂🚂
The good old American style.
After looking it up, there is no crescendo or dimuendo in the parts, so I guess there isn't anything wrong with they way they played it.
I really wish I could work out the harmony of this passage. I've never been good at harmony. I can't visualise the individual parts. I can write down the top part, and with quite an effort I can often write down some of the bass, but the middle parts are a mystery to me. If the chords are simple and pedestrian I can guess "That chord must be a minor based on the supertonic, or a dominant or whatever". But this Bruckner passage seems to me far, far, far out of the reach of my childishly simple grasp of harmony. It seems outstandingly rich and inventive. The parts seem to keep moving into unexpected places that nonetheless make perfect sense. I can't take it in.
This opening of the Finale of his 8th symphony has always transfixed me since I first heard it in my mid-teens.

@@robertgarza466 Thank you, thank you, thank you! Musical glory!
@@stephenfennell If you ended up figuring it out, could you tell me the harmony? Ideally using Roman numerals but if it’s just the chords with extensions, that works too.
Damn

Balls.
I think a BBb Cimbasso would be better suited for this instead of a Tuba
The part where Darth Vader enters the building.
Why I play tuba.
With another tuba it would be perfect
I'm blue-balled everyday not hearing the trumpet accompaniment.
Anyone know the notes for the tuba part?
+Michael Buenrostro
Well its an american style horn.
We can call it a tuba with a vasectomy.
Ain;t no bass trombone made that can cover up a Miraphone like this tuba in the recording is getting owned.

@@ohsure2784 I didn’t understand a single word you just said…
Honest question, not trying to be a music critic, but here goes:
Isn't the last sustained note of the first two sections supposed to decrescendo (or dimuendo)? I was just comparing it to the chicago low brass section doing this, and they decrescendo those last sustained notes. Wouldn't that fit better with what the orchestra is doing at those spots?
I suppose if it's not specified in the parts than I'm not too concerned, since it would just merely be a matter of interpretation.
Maybe trombone 2 isn't too loud, but he holds all the chords with piu forte when compared to his colleagues
the 2nd trombone unbalanced the chords...
I disagree
Sorry but trb 2 is too loud almost always, I know "more meat in between" but balance is just off, and time gets shakier the farther they get. B+
I disagree
